Shuffling principals will affect 17 schools

  • Follow Metro

Richmond County schools Superintendent Dana Bedden wants to replace principals in 17 schools next year, including four high schools and C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet School.

At a special-called meeting today, the school board will consider personnel changes that would be a shake-up and a shuffle, not a house cleaning. Member Alex Howard said that, to his knowledge, principals are being moved or retiring, not being fired.

For example, Academy of Richmond County Principal David Robbins is retiring, and Westside High School Principal Tim Spivey is being recommended to take his place.

Tubman Middle Principal Wayne Frazier, whose school will become an "educational center" next year, is being recommended to head Glenn Hills High, where Principal Jessie Chambers is retiring.

Dr. Bedden is recommending that Tonethia Beasley become principal of Laney High. Formerly principal of Murphey Middle, Ms. Beasley was transferred to Collins Elementary after an internal investigation into underreporting of discipline problems at Murphey.

Mr. Howard said he's not aware of any principals being hired from the outside. The recommendations appear to be about making the best use of the system's best talent, he said.

"We don't have a lot of people trying to get jobs here," he said. "I'm excited. This is the future of the Richmond County school system, and we're expecting good things from these people."

Dr. Bedden, who didn't return a phone call Tuesday, said last week that these would be the most changes he has asked for at once since taking the helm in August 2007.

Other principal recommendations include:

- Debbie Alexander, Westside High

- Wade White, Hephzibah Middle

- Victoria Reese, Langford Middle

- Nathan Benedict, Tutt Middle

- Glenda Collingsworth, (new) Pine Hill Middle

- Renee Kelly, C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet

- Thomas Norris, Collins K-8 School

- Ruby Stewart, Hornsby/East Augusta K-8 School

- Ny McRae, Diamond Lakes Elementary

- Malinda Cobb, Goshen Elementary

- Chris Neal, Gracewood Elementary

- Beverly Hite, Meadowbrook Elementary

- Velma Curtis, Wheeless Road Elementary

- Cheryl Fry, Willis Foreman Elementary

- Debbie Shepherd, Alternative Learning Center

Other recommendations:

- Janie Norris to continue as acting principal of Jenkins-White Elementary

- Charles Givens as assistant principal of Hornsby/East Augusta K-8 School

- Director of Transportation Mike Shinn to the Maintenance and Facilities Department

What a joke. Fire those who

What a joke. Fire those who aren't doing their jobs and reduce administrators, not teachers. Get rid of the waste and excess in the county administration and run it more like Columbia County and other systems that have streamlined their BOE offices. Hold administratior acountable for their actions and for goodness sake don't put a principal at Laney High School who has already been disciplined for undereporting discipline issues. Without firm discipline and very safe schools the educational process will never begin in Richmond County and we will continue to have a 60% non-graduation rate which is pathetic. Remove your other "friends and family" hires from Dr. Larke.

Whoa, As It Is, Columbia

Whoa, As It Is, Columbia County is not immune from seemingly poor decisions. I know of nine parapros, even one who works one-on-one with a special needs student with cerebral palsy, who will be laid off next year.

OMG Ms. Beasley should NOT be

OMG Ms. Beasley should NOT be at Laney, this is a MISTAKE, I'm GLAD however Dr. Welcher is LEAVING, man our prayers have been answered, but to put Mrs. Beasley there is like adding wood to the fire. They need to rethink putting her there, Dr. Frazier would be the right fit.

Amen! I am elated that Dr.

Amen!

I am elated that Dr. Renee Kelly will be the new Principal at C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet School. E-L-A-T-E-D ! ! ! I am sure that Davidson will notice her absence, however, her presence is GREATLY needed at Walker. The teachers, students, and parents will find her to be a refreshing change of pace. Dr. Kelly will be the upbeat and edifying force that they have been praying for. That school has a strong parent-teacher organization that will only get stronger and clearly benefit from a Principal (Kelly) that sees parental involvement as a boon instead of a bane. Dr Kelly, I welcome you! The C.T. Walker family welcomes you with open arms. Dr. Bedden, thank you ! ! !

Congrats CT Walker on

Congrats CT Walker on receiving Dr. Kellly; you will absolutely love her & we at Davidson will absolutely miss her :-(
I would however like to know why they didn't take Ms Addison out of Davidson? She only sits on her can and then at 3:20 announces on the overhead speaker that "all students should be out of the building"; gimme a break the bell only rang 10 min ago. Instead of walking the halls herself to eliminate students that are lagging behind, she gets on the "bull horn". She's just sitting pretty and waiting for retirement, but when will that day ever come? I know Dr Bedden doesn't like magnet schools; but please investigate our numerous complaints of students from SC and Columbia Co attending Davidson ILLEGALLY. We've given you everything from vehicle tag #'s, descriptions and student names. All has fallen on deaf ears. Addison just enabels these students; when in fact their family's tax $ doesn't flow through the county to support their student in our county's schools, it's not just at Davidson. They get around this by having a divorced non-custodial parent living in the school district, while the students reside w/custodial parent in another county other than Richmond Co.

Good points, carolinafrog, at

Good points, carolinafrog, at least about Dr. Kelly and the many cheats from Columbia County and SC who are illegally attending Davidson. I personally know of two cases, and a third student who now lives in Richmond County, but plans to move to Columbia County while remaining at Davidson. There seems to be ZERO enforcement of residency requirements, and it angers me that my Richmond Cty tax dollars are educating people who aren't supporting Augusta. In fact, given the attitude, they may well be badmouthing RC.

MidWestTransplant, thank you.

MidWestTransplant, thank you. I am NOT griping that some is fudging their way into Davidson (the school itself); I am angered that any out-of-county student is in a R'mond Co school while their family's tax $ stay go to a different county. Ms Addison enabled a Columbia Co family's 2 girls to be at Davidson before they moved out of Col Co. After their car tags were reported as Col Co tags, Addison called them in and recommended they move that car to R'mond Co; the family still owns their home in Col Co and their dog lives there "alone". How sad. Take your info to Dr Bedden and demand he do something; he has our info on his desk, but seems to not care about the tax $. If my child were at a different school other than Davidson, i'd be just as vigilant about the tax support there too. We feel lucky and humbled that our child attends Davidson; our child is still a person, but happens to have a drive that Davidson's structure suits. As well my kid had to jump through hoops to get in and has to continue to meet scholastic goals to remain. It's very sad that our BOE needs funds, but allows students from neighboring counties to utilize our system without paying thier fair way.

thereishope, I don't think it

thereishope, I don't think it is bad for Westside, it's more like sad. Mr. Spivey will be greatly missed by the parents, faculty, and students, but I have to believe that Dr Alexander will continue what Mr. Spivey has built. ARC folks...Take care of Mr. Spivey, he is the hope you have been looking for.

I think by taking Mr. Spivey

I think by taking Mr. Spivey from WHS it is going to do nothing but hurt them. Don't get me wrong, Richmond has problems that need to be handled but that has been a long time coming. What is going to come of WHS now? They are going to FALL APART. Public School is a choice and parents have the option to send their child to Public or Private school. I would not be suprised if a lot of the children who help WHS to make their good scores, leave and end up in Private School. Then what is going to happen to the rest of the RC school system?

If they own a house in RC

If they own a house in RC they are paying school taxes. I live in Aiken County but own a house in RC. So I pay school taxes that I don't get anything for. Are you sure that these out of state or out of county tags are not property owners in RC? Do you know whether they have divorced parents and use one of the other parnets address to attend school? There can be explanations for some of these.

Ms Hite was a [filtered word] poor

Ms Hite was a [filtered word] poor principal at Walker. We removed our child from there and followed Ms Baker. Hopefully the new principal will re-establish that family feeling back to Walker. As for Ms Hite, I wish the old bitty the worse. When my son would get hit by a black kid and stand up for himself he was always punished yet the black kid that started it never got reprimanded. Fuggin racist bit*h.

I'd think if some CC kids are

I'd think if some CC kids are attending Davidson, then it equals out all the RC kids who use the same tactics to attend CC schools. Davidson is a fine school, but the rest of the county could use help.
