ATLANTA, Ga. - John Thomas (Tom) Phillips, Jr., died on Feb. 18, 2009 at Piedmont Hospital. Mr. Phillips was from Atlanta and the child of John Thomas Phillips, Sr., and Christina Barker. He was a devoted step- son of Mary Holcombe Phillips. Tom graduated from North Fulton High School and the University of Georgia, where he rarely missed a Saturday in the fall. He is survived by his son, John Thomas Phillips, III, and wife, Gilchrist Phillips from Augusta, Ga.; his daughter, Susan Phillips Matthews and husband, Ryan Matthews of Salida, Colo.; and five grandchildren whom he loved spending time with. He was the Owner of Phillips-Browne Sign Company and Salesman for Greater Atlanta Signs. He was a member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church since 1953, where he was very active in Sunday School and the Family Life Center. Tom was a devoted member of the Kiwanis Club and enjoyed every opportunity to play golf with his friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 at 2 p.m., at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, 2715 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA 30305. Funeral arrangements will be handled by H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, Atlanta, GA.
