What must Republicans be thinking?

  • Follow Letters

It absolutely, positively blows my mind that only three -- three! -- Republicans voted in favor of President Obama's and the Democrats' stimulus package the president signed into law this Tuesday past.

I even, seriously, got a message from Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, telling me he voted against the stimulus because "the Democrats in Washington obviously don't understand what the taxpayers want." President Obama currently has an 82-percent approval rating, and the Republicans were overwhelmingly voted out of Congress last November. Obviously President Obama, the congressional Democrats and the three Yankee senators who care about their jobs and voted for the stimulus don't know what the taxpayers want or need.

I wish people such as Sen. Chambliss would realize I'm really not that stupid or gullible, because reading The Augusta Chronicle every day keeps me very intelligent -- up on all things.

What must the Republicans be thinking by not supporting President Obama's stimulus whatsoever? A logical person might think the Republican Party would go completely extinct when the economy improves from so many people becoming employed, having their benefits extended and keeping their houses, thus stimulating business growth.

Notwithstanding, the Republicans know exactly what they're doing. They cannot support President Obama now; instead, they swear up and down that nothing Obama does helps the economy. And when the economy inevitably improves -- and a small tax surplus is created from Obama repealing Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest 5 percent of Americans -- the Republicans will come back into power with unshaky promises of "Now that everything's finally fixed, let's have the tax cuts back. Let's see if we can possibly top the budget deficit that Bush left President Obama. And, uh, oh yeah -- no more oversight of business because oversight is communist." And then we can go through the whole horrific boom-and-bust cycle all over again.

Great. Can't wait. Try to hold on to your 401(k) at that point!

Why hasn't anyone realized that the Republicans actually WANTED the so-called "Recovery Bill" to pass? Their rooster (the true word would not pass the AC filter)-and-bull show of force by voting unanimously (with the exception of their three hand selected pro votes) against it in the Senate. Their states, and their constituents will also benefit from the good and the bad, so why not be in favor of the bill. Again, a shameful and pitiful show of force, BUT, not before they (figuratively) gathered together in a small back room, offered the long and the short straws (3 short straws, the necessary number to guarantee the passage of the bill) to all of their gang of plotters. The yea vote from the three "losers" makes for common sense if you give it some thought. GGpap

I think congress should pass a trillion dollar stimulus bill every week. If one is so great for the country, dozens will make us all millionaires. What a brilliant plan. I hope O is reading this. He may appoint me to a really important position in his cabinet.

JesusIsComing

Just keep checking Wall Street and your 401K to see how the public really feels about the "stimulus".

patriciathomas

Did CNN play Putin's speech concerning the stimulus package? He told O not to try the socialist path, it's what brought the USSR to it's knees. My guess is CNN and PBS will skip this Putin speech.

fred1217

Weekly stimulus packages were done by Bush and Cheney. They were called invoices to Halliburton. It's about time America wised up to the fraud. I was watching Fox News the other day and they were watching the stock market and hoping it declined. They were also complaining that it had been 19 hours and the stimulus package hadn't worked yet! What a bunch of sore LOSERS, hoping that the country will fail. You can't get more unpatriotic than that?

patriciathomas

good story fred1217. CNN would be proud of your "reporting" ability. Wanta cracker?

fred1217

Why are you always bringing up the Race issue patriciathomas?

Bizarro

See the Rep offered a counter plan for half the money to provide twice the jobs. Of course the Dems cannot tolerate such efficiency and then the worst sin they wanted most it as tax breaks. And we all know tax breaks don't work like Obama said and says. Now we see Obama's evil plan to destroy our economy by adopting the "failed Bush policy" and tax cuts. This is treason-impeach Obama and his evil war regime. Really both sides are playing a political gamble and to the victor goes the spoils. If the economy drastically improves the Dems win if it fails the Rep win. Neither give a crap about helping you or our economy.

Maybe it is just me but the best line in this article is "because reading The Augusta Chronicle every day keeps me very intelligent -- up on all things" If the writer feels that the Augusta Chronicle is a great inclusive educational news resource, you have to take what he has written with a huge grain of salt. The best articles are those copied from the AP and even those are posted very selectively by the AC editorial staff. This would be the equivalent of saying Fox news is an impartial media outlet.

patriciathomas

Yeah Martinez, FOX doesn't know it's place like all of the other outlets that chant in unison. How can they be impartial?

Martinez

All the news outlets slant in one direction or another, I just personally find Fox one of the most obnoxious about it. None the less, no one is going to reach superior intellect from the AC alone.

patriciathomas

LOL Martinez, that's a fact

Bizarro

I agree Martinez. Since Hannity went solo he is like a rabid dog-just sickening. O'Reilly is a pinhead-oh the irony. But go to CNN and you see those of similar ilk. I like the rational folks like Wolf.

carcraft

Martinez, you remember little Chrissy Mathews and "I get a tingly feeling in my legs when Obama speaks" . Keith Olberman dissing Bud Day "as the worst person in the world," a veteran who supported McCain who is a congrssional Medal of Honor winner and shared time in the Hanoi Hilton with McCain. The reporting on Palin by the main stream media was rediculous. Lack of reporting on Obama's thin resume was equally rediculous (Obama didn't even know what states boarder Illinois). Fox has never quite reached that point in partisanship.

HYPOCRITES 08

They are too busy hating to be thinking. Well I guess if you mean thinking about President Obama, then that is a different story.

HYPOCRITES 08

Yes PT we need to listen to a Russian leader.

patriciathomas

Hypo, normally CNN can't get enough of the Marxists, socialists and communists. When one points out the fallacy of socialism, they become just a "Russian Leader".

GACopperhead

Pt, in your opinion, what's the best solution, and what do you think would happen if nothing is done? Please don't use the failed tax breaks to the wealthy, as it has been proven not to work. Get original, use your brain, I'd like to see serious discussion as opposed to the typical partisan bs. By the way, many things work theoretically, but add in humanity's penchant to take any good thing and totally botch it.

patriciathomas

You're right Bizzaro, many people find it hard to tell the difference between a reporter and a commentator. I guess they each need to hold up signs for the "slow of thought".

GACopperhead

carcraft, do you not remember, also, McCain saying just days before our near total economic collapse, "The economy is sound", echoing the misinformation that Dub was putting out? While MOH and captivity are proof he's patriotic, he showed, resoundingly, that he and Palin(ditz) we not qualified to run the country.

mad_max

The Republicans voted against the stimulus because it is a stupid plan with almost NOTHING in it that will stimulate the economy. It is mostly welfare type programs and that explains why most Democrats support it. Since even Obama and his staff have publicly said they do not know if it will work, I think the Republicans have a legitimate arguement. Most economists agree that we need to do something but they also agree that the stimulus program approved by the Democrats will do very little to create jobs and help the economy. The Republican vote expresses a legitimate viewpoint and they, in fact, proposed a legitimate alternative but were totally ignored. I applaud their opposition. These opposing views are what we get with our two party system filled with drooling, frothing zealots. What we need is one of two things. Either a valid, third party based on middle of the road common sense ideology OR a revolution where we either fight it out in the streets winner take all or split up into two different countries. I propose the Constitutional Capitalist Republic of America west of the Mississippi and the United Socialist States of America east of the Mississippi. AK and HI, who knows.

NoSocialism

No one read the bill but its unpatriotic no to sign it. Go ahead and sign the contract for your new car or house with out reading it. Yeah, that makes good business sense. As far as claiming to be intelligent because you read the Chronicle daily is probably one of the funnest things I had ever read. If anything, the Chronicle has failed to communicate what the stimulus bill contained from the very beginning. Not only that but the congress turns around and changes things at the last minute. So much for transparency. While Comrade President claims we are in dire straits, people are still buying up cell phones, paying for cable TV and flocking to the malls. I wrote to both of Georgia's Senators and Congressman Broun and thanked them for voting "No," on this stupid bill. But none the less, you are a sore winner. You still want to say something about conservatives because they don't fit in a Socialist frame of mind. This is not about hate, its not about race, it is about doing things smartly and responsibly.

stewartist

I'm amazed with each statement I read from the Obama kool-ade drinkers. it doesn't take to much common sense to see that the Socialistic path this country is heading into is going to be a disaster. Russia and China have each tried this and failed miserably. What part about this do you Dems NOT understand. Those of you who remember the Reagan years know that tax cuts for large and small businesses creates jobs without increasing our debt. NOT spending billions with pork filled crap. Anybody need a refill of their kool-ade?

GACopperhead

Hmmm, the stimulus bill will do nothing for the economy....ask the governors if that's true. Ask Mayor Deke if the stimulus money won't help the local area. Republicans have their heads where the sun don't shine. Aks those who've lost their jobs if the unemployment insurance won't help them pay their house payments or buy food. Ask the CHILDREN if they don't need health insurance, and if payment for services won't help doctors and hospitals. Ask boards of education if the money won't help. You are all idiots. You refuse to see that the very same policies you advocate today are the same policies that have gotten us where we are. BRILLIANT!

carcraft

Copperhead, Do you remember Bush saying Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were introuble? Chris Dodd and Barny Frank saying no they are OK. By your standards Dodd, Frank and the DEmocrates are not qualified to hold the posts they do! Where is your out rage over this. Much of this mess could have been avoided. The Dems were running the Senate at the time. Bud Day certianly can not be called the Worst person in the World Being a MOH winner and serving in three wars in a combat capacity. Old Olberhman got a pass on calling him that.

mgroothand

Nathan Kirby writes "President Obama currently has an 82-percent approval rating". That approval rating has been drastically revised downwards to a present of 60% according to this morning's news. The honeymoon is almost over as reality is starting to sink in.

blamin

Bwaahahaha, Bring in the Clowns. Nathan says, What must the Republicans be thinking by not supporting President Obama's stimulus whatsoever? or JUSTUS4, A good article. The Republicans are operating in a parallel universe and under a flawed ideology. It has been proven to be inconsistent with American values. AND the best clown quote from MARTINEZ, The best articles are those copied from the AP. Thanks for the laughs guys; if you weren't so funny, you'd be pathetic.

GACopperhead

Carcraft, go Google the votes on regulation. Check to see where the majority of lobbyist money went and then see how many REPUBLICANS voted against it. Republicans had a sure majority. They put it down. You don't even know the facts.

GACopperhead

http://www.bigbuilderonline.com/industry-news.asp?sectionID=0&articleID=... Here's a little proof for you Repubs that only want to blame Dems. Republican Senate leader Frist wouldn't let it come up for a vote. Repub Senators were the on;y ones targeted by Fanny and Freddie. All the Dems Fault, huh?
