Senior at Greenbrier is county's STAR student

Greenbrier High School senior Emily Bragg was named the Columbia County STAR student during a ceremony Thursday in Harlem.

Emily scored a perfect 2400 on her SAT to attain the honor, but was unable to attend the ceremony, which recognized the STAR students from each of the county's public high schools in addition to Augusta Preparatory Day School and Augusta Christian Schools.

A previous commitment to lead Greenbrier High's United Nations Model team during an event at Georgia Southern University this week prevented her from appearing in Harlem.

Emily's choice for STAR teacher and U.N. Model sponsor, Tracy Roden, attended the ceremony and Emily's mother, Terri Bragg, stood in for her. Emily and Ms. Roden now will represent Columbia County at a district ceremony to be held at the First Baptist Church in Thomson on March 12.

Man is denied bond on charge of murder

An Augusta man accused of committing the city's first homicide of 2009 was denied bond Thursday.

Michael O. Faulks, 19, faces a charge of murder in the Jan. 4 shooting death of 22-year-old Jamar White. Mr. Faulks told investigators the two were friends and the shooting was an accident.

Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. denied bond after a hearing in Richmond County Superior Court. Mr. Faulks must remain in jail awaiting possible indictment and trial.

No charges pressed in theft at Augusta Tech

An Augusta Technical College administrator told police that a student took cash from her purse during a tornado drill Tuesday morning, although she doesn't want to prosecute.

The 58-year-old victim said a surveillance video shows the student entering and leaving the office twice, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report. The administrator said that $13 was stolen and that another student told her that the suspect was bragging about "going back and get her credit cards."

TV, PlayStation taken in theft at apartment

Two masked men kicked open the door to an Augusta man's apartment early Wednesday and stole his television.

The victim, who lives in the 2400 block of Acapulco Drive, said the men were armed and wearing black clothing and masks, according to a Richmond County sheriff's report. They took the victim's flat-screen TV and PlayStation III video game console, the report stated.

X-rays identify body of man found in Windsor

A body found in Windsor has been identified as Marquez James Tyler, 19, of Salley, the Aiken County Coroner's Office said Thursday.

Mr. Tyler, whose body was found Tuesday night, was last seen Nov. 19 and was reported missing Nov. 22.

He was identified using X-rays that had been made earlier at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. A comparison of the chest and skull X-rays and those from an autopsy performed in Newberry established the identity, Coroner Tim Carlton said.

As a result, DNA testing will not be completed, he said. Mr. Tyler died of a gunshot wound, Mr. Carlton said Wednesday.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office's criminal investigation continues.

Worker shot in armed robbery at Aiken store

Aiken County detectives were investigating a Thursday morning shooting and attempted armed robbery at the Hot Spot convenience store in New Ellenton.

About 1:45 a.m., two armed men wearing masks walked in to the store and demanded money from an employee.

According to the incident report, when one of the suspects was unable to open the cash register, he got upset and shot the store clerk in the foot. The victim told police she thought the men left in a vehicle.

Student's photos lead to arrest

A Greenbrier High School student was arrested Tuesday after he took photos up a teacher's skirt, police said.

Curtis Jamar Pickard, 17, of the 4200 block of Waterston Courtyard in Evans, was charged with unlawful eavesdropping or surveillance. He was released from the Columbia County Detention Center later that day after posting a $2,600 bond, according to jail records.

The school's public safety officer told police that on Tuesday students told her that Mr. Pickard had used his cell phone to take pictures up a teacher's skirt on Monday without her knowledge and showed them to others, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's Office report.

The officer checked the student's phone, which contained pictures of what the 33-year-old teacher identified as her legs and the clothing she was wearing on Monday, according to the report.

AMAZING

This teacher has been violated. I hope the school system sends a strong message when they discipline this student. Teachers and students have the right to attend school without being preyed on by perverts. Punishment suggestion-let the important men in her life "discipline" this boy. That sounds fair to me!

workingmom

You could be right harryp, but this is a good lesson to all young people of how actions can lead to unwanted consequences. Something this young man has failed to learn.

patriciathomas

A giant "attagirl" and "waytago" to Emily Bragg for "ackin white". 2400 on the SAT is impressive. Good parenting shows.

I4PUTT

I was just wondering. Will Michael Fauls appear on tv, get free bullets for life and possibly receive a scholarship for being the first in 2009??? See what you can accomplish if you put forth a little effort.

curly123053

This shows the need for schools to retsrict cell phone use by students on school grounds. What type of policy does the Columbia County Schools have if any?.....if this was nothing more than a prank I would hate to see a young person marked for life as a sex offender if this was a first time, but if this was a thug type always in trouble then whatever he gets needs to send a message. Either way the punishment needs to send a message........as far as those thugs who robbed the Hot Spot in New Ellenton I think you are TRASH and SCUM. Guess you needed cash quick for your crack buy huh? The lady you shot is a personal friend of mine from church and she is also one of the nicest caring persons I have ever known. Did you bother to ask her to open the register or did you try in your blood thirsty rush for crack cash and shoot my friend for the fun of it? Anyway, I got that off my chest........

RocknRoll

Good morning everyone !

mommy22girls

patriciathomas should be banned from these boards, a simple good job would have fine, "ackin white", unnecessary! And about the Augusta Tech teacher, why not press charges? He robbed you and deserves charges beting brought against him!

HYPOCRITES 08

WTF is asking white or in your warped mind " ackin white"? Do you ever get tired of your little smart [filtered word] comments? If I were to be a smart [filtered word] like you, I would say " Acting Asian" rather than white.

pofwe

Why did an Augusta Technical College administrator report to police that a student took cash from her purse, if she didn't want to prosecute? Intimidated?

chey

Why is the Augusta Tech story even published in the paper if the administrator didn't want to press charges. Why even report it? It's a waste of time. Either press charges, or let it go and don't even waste the police officer's time.
Great Job Emily Bragg. You're a leader and I hope more students follow your lead.

justthefacts

I'm not excusing what the kid did, but a lifetime punishment? We need common sense in punishing these sorts of crime.

curly123053

justthefacts I agree at his age he should not face a lifetime listed as a 1st offender, especially if it is determined this was just a careless prank. Maybe getting caught might "wake him up" and cause him to be more responsible in his actions in the future. But, if he was a troublemaker and schoolyard type bully he should be dealt with appropiately......as far as PT's "ackin white" comment, being a white conservative male I find it very distasteful and irresponsible on her/his part. Congrats to Emily Bragg should have been good enough.

dani

I have never seen PT post an irresponsible comment. Sarcastic perhaps, but harmless. Anyhow, what is wrong with acting white?

dani

The student needs psychiatric help. At his age, he should know better. Either, bad parenting or mental problems.

ZenoElia

dani..could you please define: "ackin white, or acting white, or asking white"? Is there so much racial hatred in this town that the ones who are haters cannot wait to type their hatred and laugh about the responses they get? Why are so many of the posters on here allowed to continue to bait others with their hate-remarks? Is there no understanding among any of you? Just another reminder that the "love of many will wax cold" in the last days. Lord Jesus come quickly..(so I don't have to endure the constant hatred and disgust the citizens around me eternally spout from their lips..or their fingertips..whichever applies.) I'm gone for weeks and I return to find the same old attitudes and prejudices...will Augusta never change?

HYPOCRITES 08

Dani, you need to wipe your nose. Having too much feces on the tip of ones nose, can be dangerous to your health.

curly123053

ZenoElia, don't worry because I feel we are in the endtimes. There are to many signs of this throughout the world. I am ready and I hope you are too as long as everyone else.

CarlA

When did the a perfect score on the SAT become 2400?

debby

2400 became a perfect SAT score when they added the writing portion a year or so ago.

Craig Spinks

CONGRATULATIONS to Miss Bragg on her incredible academic accomplishment!

justthefacts

And why would "they" do that Justis? Who is "we"?

ladybug2

Why don't you stop "ackin" ignorant and grow the hell up. Why not get a job and a life while you're at it, because the only responsibility you have must be posting stupid comments on this website.

j2says

Do you really think a teenage boy being a pervert and a jerk is sign of poor parenting and a mental issue? Have you ever met a teenage boy?

HYPOCRITES 08

So it is okay for PT to tell her to stop " Ackin white " but I cannot say she should stop " Acting Asian " ?

mgroothand

patriciathomas' remark about 'ackin" is perfectly appropriate albeit somewhat sarcastic. However that is how Ms Thomas generally comes across on these boards. Her remark draws attention to the fact that many blacks have a tendency to "murder" the English language and especially certain words as well as accents. I avoid conversations with blacks of a certain age only because I truly can not understand them and wish to forego the embarrasment that invariably follows, embarassment for both of us. I speak several languages but Ebonics is not one of them.

j2says

People of many races murder the English language. Besides how does "akin white" equate to her success. It's her hard work that helped her achieve this accolade not her race. The comments on race were inappropriate and unnecessary as usual.

HYPOCRITES 08

Many Blacks murder the language? I guess you never heard Sconyers or Grantum or a few other speak?

HYPOCRITES 08

AMEN 2say. People like PT and MGROOTHAND will find any excuse to spew their B.S. teenagers of all races " Murder" whatever language they speak.
