School faces increasing challenges to stay open

Hope Christian School is once again fending off questions about whether it will be shutting its doors, questions it has had to address several times in recent years.

The Rev. Ron Burton, the school's executive director, said that its ministry has often put Hope Christian in financial straits but that his faith remains strong that God will provide.

"It would be an accurate and fair statement to say we struggle," he said, adding that the school has always struggled. "I really feel, unfortunately, that it's the type of school we are as a faith-based ministry."

For the first eight years, the school was in the same location, but in the past two years it has moved several times, giving rise to more concern, the Rev. Burton said.

The school has 13 liens against it for not paying taxes, according to public documents.

The outstanding amount owed is about $60,000, the Rev. Burton said.

Last school year, the Internal Revenue Service sent letters directly to parents requesting that they pay the IRS directly before paying tuition. A repayment plan has been worked out.

"People pending Senate confirmation aren't the only ones who struggle to pay their taxes," the Rev. Burton said.

But "robbing Peter to pay Paul" put the school in the predicament, something he said makes him feel un-Christlike.

"We're supposed to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's," he said. "I've been faced with closing the doors or electing to continue to operate, and I've elected to continue to operate. It's affected my personal finances. It's affected the school's finances. It's been hard."

Most recently, paychecks have been delayed to some employees for as little as a couple of days and as long as a month. The Rev. Burton said he went weeks without getting paid at one point.

"We've made personal sacrifices to be here because we recognize the need and we've seen the Lord work," he said.

In hindsight, some of his decisions haven't been good business decisions, he said.

"A family comes to us and says we can't afford to pay, yet we still enroll them, knowing that we're struggling to pay our bills," the Rev. Burton said. "An effort to try to help is sometimes -- often times -- to our own detriment."

Recently, the school began requiring parents to pay a minimum tuition fee, a decision the Rev. Burton said wasn't easy.

There are, however, some positive developments in Hope Christian's finances, the Rev. Burton said.

It continues to have a strong relationship with Marvin United Methodist Church, which houses its high school program in Martinez, and it has also acquired the Girls Inc. building in Harrisburg for its K-8 schoolchildren.

Families continue to enroll their children, and donations continue to come in. An unsolicited donation of $7,000 was made over the Christmas break.

The school is funded through tuition, state special needs vouchers and donations, although donations have slipped. From 2001 to 2007, donations averaged $80,000 a year, but as of late January of this school year donations were just slightly more than $20,000.

Many of the school's pupils excel at Hope Christian, where they might not have in the public school system, he said.

Hope Christian graduates have gone to Augusta State University, Kennesaw State and elsewhere.

"We're just a place where God has done some incredible things, and our hope is that that continues to happen," the Rev. Burton said. "Instead of closing our doors, we're looking for ways to duplicate this."

"Last school year, the Internal Revenue Service sent letters directly to parents requesting that they pay the IRS directly before paying tuition." ----- Isn't this special? The IRS can tell the parents to pay them directly for back taxes, and our glorious new treasury secretary got off with paying over $37,000 in back taxes without harassment (despite signing papers with the IMF that the stipend he was paid was to go for just that). Daschle really should be ashamed with himself, and you can be sure the IRS won't touch a hair on his chinny chin chin for his whopping 6 figure back tax bill. There really is a two tier system at the IRS in paying taxes: politicians get the red carpet treatment; anyone else, the IRS will hunt you down in Siberia to pay these same politicians wild spending sprees. We really do need to do away with the federal income tax, it's being abused by too many for things it was never designed to do -- especially to pay state projects.

I feel for them but in the end this is going to have a huge impact on local scgools when the kids that were not planned for are dumped on the exhisting schools laps. I know the law says the RCBOE is supposed to track these types of facilities and fund various things for education, I wonder if they have been. BTW the letters in question aren't really "requests" they are really court documents "demanding" payment first to the IRS, almost like when a person has their paycheck garnished to pay debtors. In that regard, if a parent pays any money to the school, they would be breaking the law.

Excuse me but all of the parents regardless of which school their children attend (public, private, or semi private) all pay taxes in some form to ensure that the public schools in their district have the fundage for their children. If you rent your taxes are removed from the rent as the owner still has to pay taxes on the property. If you own and have a voucher you still pay property taxes on your home. If you send your children to private school congrats you are an achiever who still pays property taxes to the public school system along with the tuition fees to the private school. People need to look at the big picture and stop expecting some to do without just cause they have not achieved the same success. My advice you want better work harder to earn it. This school has turned around some pretty awful kids. I applaud their efforts as it has been thankless. They are doing God's work and are achievers.

Why doesn't billy morris donate some money to them. Or who ever helps fun the Heritage Academy in Olde Towne. Should help this school.

Disssman, how do you understand the laws of school taxes??? My child attended private school for yrs, but yet I still paid for public school taxes, like many other parents who go private. I really wish this law had changed because I had to not only pay for private school, but also public school for other children. So, if parents are paying for private school and public schools, and the child returns to public school, how is this child or children being dumped on the existing schools lap? When in fact, the parents are already paying for the child to attend the local public school.

whatdoIknow

Thought you would like to know, they did not acquire the old Girls Inc. property, they made an arrangement for payment and the stupid Board of Directors for Girls Inc. said okay and moved them into the school without doing their homework. Which serves them right, should have never closed Girls Inc. to start with! Will be interesting to see what happens to the property once it becomes vacant again.

Thank you zowies and Queen4842, I pay a bundle of taxes for public school ever year and don't have a child in school. So if these kids go back to public school they can go on the taxes I pay and have paid.

TARA

Thank you Grace3. I am so glad to hear some positive comments about Hope Christian School. I pay school taxes in Richmond Co. and also Lincoln Co.and I don't even live in Lincoln Co. So I guess my tax situation is taken care of. I just wish I was very wealthy where I could help this school out more.I know they are helping students that no other school would want to take the time to, especially Langford Middle School. There, they throw students in the 7th grade in Inclusion meaning they have to make it whether they are ready for a regular classroom or not. I know this is a board decision but the tachers there could learn some patience from the ACREDITED teachers from Hope. HOPE HAS HELPED MY DAUGHTER MORE THAN ANY OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE PAST EIGHT YEARS. Please try to help this school as they are really helping children.God Bless
