MILLEN, Ga. - Jack Dempsey 'J.D.' Kent, Sr., 85, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009, at home. Born September 28, 1923, in Emanuel County, he graduated from Millen High School in 1941. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired rural mail carrier, a former member of Millen Lions Club, a charter member of Magnolia Country Club, and a member of the Millen Baptist Church. He will be remembered fondly as a loving and devoted husband, a kind and gentle father and grandfather, and a true friend to many. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Dreta Blackburn Kent, of Millen; his son, Jack Dempsey Kent, Jr., of Millen; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Kent Brown and David Brinson Brown, of Statesboro; a sister, Ruth Kent Miller, of Millen; and four grandchildren - Ashley Elaine Kent Kennedy, Jack Dempsey Kent, III, David Brinson Brown, Jr., and Sarah Kathryn Brown. Funeral services will be Wednesday at three o'clock at Millen Baptist Church with Rev. David Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in the Millen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Bragg, Tim Frawley, George Gunn, B.L. Kent, Ray Roberts, King Rocker, Kirk Rocker, Mark Rocker, Matthew Rocker, Edward Thompson, and Troy Gay. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church social hall. The family will receive friends at the residence on Azalea Drive.
