Isabel Toledo. Jason Wu. Lemongrass. Those three names were relatively unknown before Inauguration Day but are now fashion buzzwords, thanks to first lady -- and fashion icon -- Michelle Obama's wardrobe choices.
Unlike former first lady Jackie Kennedy, who spent exorbitantly on custom clothes, Mrs. Obama mixes in pieces most women can afford, said Mary Tomer, the founder of and a contributing editor to Mrs. O (www.mrs-o.org), a fashion blog created last fall that is dedicated to Mrs. Obama.
"I think it's just fascinating the broad appeal of her as a woman and also her style," Ms. Tomer said.
Mrs. Obama's style, a modern look for any age or race, is a mix of lesser-known designers and mass-market apparel, Ms. Tomer said. Mrs. Obama has worn goods from J. Crew and H&M, in addition to brands with Augusta stores, White House Black Market and Gap
It's possible to emulate Mrs. Obama's look -- even on a budget.
"It's about remixing what you already have," Ms. Tomer said.
