Obama must pull out all troops now

  • Follow Letters

I want to respond to Harold Jackson's guest column ("Given the U.S. experience in Iraq, we need clearer goals for other war," Feb. 4) by saying that I don't agree on everything he said in this column.

The Bush administration was not only just wrong about the weapons of mass destruction. It was wrong about many other things. It was wrong about violating the Geneva Conventions and ordering prisoners of war to be tortured in any way. It was wrong about sending a lot of U.S. troops to get injured or killed.

I'm not sure if Osama bin Laden was or is the mastermind of the 9-11 attacks, because the Bush administration went by bad and inaccurate intelligence. President Bush even lied about some comments he made in some of his State of the Union addresses. The Bush administration was wrong about starting a war with Iraq and Afghanistan in the first place.

President Obama needs to get all U.S. troops out of both of these countries and end both of these wars.

David Thomas

Just like almost anything

Just like almost anything else....Just because it was wrong to start something does not mean pulling out is the right answer. Once it is in the deed is done!!

I sure wish SOMEONE could say

I sure wish SOMEONE could say "Bush lied" and back it up with evidence.....JUST ONCE. I've heard it for 8 years, and no one has yet to back it up. I guess they figure if they say it enough times it will become true.

"The Bush administration was

"The Bush administration was wrong about starting a war with Iraq and Afghanistan in the first place."????? Al Qaeda was definitely in Afghanistan, but you don't think we should have gone after them? Iraq was shooting at our pilots daily, but you want to give them a pass too. Heck of an American there.

The U.S./NATO mission in

The U.S./NATO mission in Afghanistan is doomed. It is doomed because of demography, geography, resources & historical imperatives. No foreign power has invaded Afghanistan & subdued its fierce tribesmen. Alexander the Great could not do it 2500 years ago. The Persians could not do it. The British could not do it. The Soviets could not do it. Dick Cheney is right one thing - the timeframe of this clash of civilizations (of course Cheney did everything in his power to make his prediction so): This conflict could last 20 or even 50 years. The original crusades achieved their original objective (Christian access to Jerusalem) within 5 years. Then the mission deteriorated. The west only managed to maintain control of The Holy Land for 150 to 200 years & then things reverted back to the status quo ante. In Iraq, it will be Iraqis who determine that country's future. Iraqis are entirely capable of handling their own affairs. United States cannot "fix" Iraq after she broke it. Iraqis will fix Iraq. United States had the right to pursue those responsible for the 9/11 attacks & to overthrow the Taliban for harboring Al Qaeda but does not have the right to occupy Afghanistan 8 years later.

There's plenty of evidence

There's plenty of evidence that Busy lied, Sister A, if you look beyond right-wing sources. Unfortunately, Congress has so far decided that it's got too much else on its plate (like cleaning up all the other Bush messes) to prosecute anyone for the lies and abuses perpetrated in the run-up and operation of the Iraq war. Having said that, I believe the LTE is mistaken and it would be foolhardy to simply pull out of these countries willy-nilly (impossible to do it safely, too). We should never have invaded Iraq because we never did the job in Afghanistan--a job that still needs doing and has been made more difficult for 7 years of neglect and half-measures. Yes, the terrain, etc. are daunting, but we have little choice. I'm a liberal Dem, but I'm afraid I can't endorse the Kumbaya crowd's naive demands to "just pull out".

The article is correct on
Unpublished

The article is correct on ending the wars. The damage has been done to the servicemembers, their families, their bodies & minds, the military equipment, the military morale, and the nation's high standing in the world. Ninety-two percent of Americans never wore a uniform, excepts as Boy/Cub Scouts and their attitudes are rarely credible, much like radio/TV talkers who knows EVERYTHING "bout EVERYTHING and confess an extreme love of country, BUT, never demonstrated it by serving the country. It's not difficult to send others to die, just conjure up a patriotic slogan, feed it to the all-white media's talkers (the same men who wouldn't fight themselves) and start counting the body bags. That's what happened after 911. Now, the damage is done. In January, there were 24 suicides in the military. Of course, U don't know about it unless your son or daughter have been effected and no one really can understand the human damage. Again, the wars must be ended and the previous administration must answer for their actions. America's sons & daughters demand their leaders, who said it would be "cake walk" answer the question: Why?

This LTE is symbolic of the

This LTE is symbolic of the new Obamafest majority. I think we should merely forgive those who attacked us on 9-11, killed 17 sailors on the US Cole, bombed the WTC, and even those who live here and bomb our public buildings with no regard for American lives. Oh wait....from Bill Ayers to Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri...Obama is already doing this. I say we pull our troops out today. Let Iraq fail as a democracy and let Iran claim this terrority for their own. I'm sure Iran would treat us more fairly and abandon all efforts to gain nuclear weapons if we were so kind.

sistera,what does al qaeda

sistera, what does al qaeda have to do with any of your questions?bush nor any us president ,has no right to invade, and topple the leader of a soverign country.even if saddam had wmd's so what? who are we to tell who can have weapons and who can't?who put the us in charge of the world?funny, if you look back over the last 30-40 years, the only countries that are fighting are us and israel.why is that?why would saddam use those weapons on us? we're the ones who supplied them to him,and when we liked iran we supplied them with weapons.if we had russian jets encroaching our east or west coast, don't you think we would be firing at them also?the pilots do this to taunt the people on the ground to see what kind of response they'll get, nothing new here.what bush lies do you want? how about the lie he told when he said he saw the first plane hit the tower on 911?he said it was on tv in the school lobby.the footage wasn't given to the media until 9/12.it's on tape if you'd like to see it.if binladen ordered alqaeda to attack on 911, why isn't 911 mentioned on his most wanted poster?because the fbi spokesman said they have no proof he did anything.then how could al qaeda be involved?

Justus, your comparisons to

Justus, your comparisons to this war with others has one major flaw. We have a totally volunteer military now. Nobody is drafted as in Korea and Vietnam. 19 year olds aren't forced to give up their jobs and be sent halfway around the world to get maimed or killed. These men and women volunteer because they put their country first, and their own well being afterward. Suicides have been a part of the military since time began. Just because CNN said it is the worst now than ever doesn't make it so. There are those of us who are proud to have served. We knew the risks before we signed the form and took the oath. We did it anyway. I did it for 24 years and have only a few regrets. And in case you folks don't realize it, these Islamic butchers will kill you liberals just as fast as they will me because you're not one of them, and they can't tolerate that. For the most part, this president is in their good graces now. Let one major arms shipment to Israel get reported and see how fast that changes. He's in for a rude awakening.

I guess U.S. Troops shutting

I guess U.S. Troops shutting down the rape rooms and torture chambers Saddam used on his own people was a mistake huh? And it was a known fact that Saddam had possessed WMD and used them on his own countrymen, was it not? Anyhthing Saddam got he brought on his own. The people of Iraq are much better off than they were under Saddam's days of rule and for those who do not see that I feel sorry for you. Iraq just held some elections where they made their own selections to lead their country. THe Iraqi people have more to be thankful of since US Forces liberated them from a tyrant's rule. To say that we should have NEVER gone to Iraq is saying that it was a mistake that we shut down the rape rooms and torture chambers that the Iraqi government at that time was using on their people. Should we help put Iraq back the way it used to be ?

The big O wants to play nice

The big O wants to play nice with the Mid-East tyrannical governments and will cave in to their demands. He also wants Guantanamo closed so those prisoners of war can be housed in OUR prisons! So when you find the terrorist folks in your back yard, the big O supporters shoud keep their mouth shut--you get what you pay for. And who says there were NEVER WMD's in Iraq? Ever think why Suddam buried tanks, jeeps, and other weapons (Yes, these were found by our military when they were looking for Saddam). Ever think about the chemical weapns found in Iraq? Those chemicals were to be used against the US; and some of you seem to think that's okay and not reason enough to slap Iraq when they needed it. The big O DOESN'T know how to lead this nation--nor does he understand foreign affairs.

People like David Thomas are

People like David Thomas are going to get us all killed while we sleep. As the planes flew into their targets on 9/11 it was this mentality that prevailed. To say there were no WMDs is obtuse and living in denial. Saddam killed hundreds of thousands of people who were defenseless and his sons killed and tortured innocent women and children by the thousands. Today they are just a memory and we have free elections in this once haven for terrorists who financed our enemies. George Bush did save us from future attacks by arresting the ring leaders and breaking up their networks. He sent Ben laden into hiding and as we slept there are no planes flying into any targets and no subways or public places being targeted and destroyed. We are better off for this war and History will prove that he was correct by his strategic action against the Middle East by destroying this dictator's haven for terrorism, look at the big picture, BTW David Obama's father should have pulled out.

Putt is right as a Christian

Putt is right as a Christian nation we should turn the other cheek. We should be more like Ghandi. We should let the terrorist attack and kill millions and millions of Americans until we gain international sympathy. Then with the world on our side the terrorist will just give up. Delusional friggin fruits. Let's see Congress managed to catch Clinton in his lies but after 43 investigations no lies yet for Bush. See the Dems can't even catch a bona fide liar and you fools trust these morons to fix our economy. Good grief. With Cain everything is gloom and doom and he just can't wait till every jew and American is dead=punishment for bad deeds. Augusta is an intellectual abyss. I can't believe college, university, nor medical school could survive-must be out of towners. "Just pull out" I tried that, knocked her and had to pay for an abortion. Apparently just pulling out doesn't work. hee, hee, hee.

They had bin Laden's

They had bin Laden's telephone number on a documentary the other night (Nova "Spy Factory"). I think he's swithced to Verizon now though, because all you get is "you must first dial a one or a zero..." If investment bankers get billions for bringing chaos and destruction to New York's financial district, why doesn't bin Laden get a bonus too?

If the big O is successful in

If the big O is successful in his plan to pull our troops out of Iraq in the manner that he says he will, just think of the money the greedy congressmen (liberals, democrats) can put into their pockets--well, guess you could say its keeping the money at home, right? That's what they did in protecting the likes of Fannie and Freddie et al--those buffoons just made themselves richer at the public's expense.

Well Obama wants to pull out

Well Obama wants to pull out of Iraq but has ordered sending more troops to Afghanistan. I bet that goads all you morons who supported this fool and want to leave both. Obama is just a man of words-no action. Eight years a state senator with no action such running for Prez he could only mention he is a community organizer (nothing there except ACORN). I mean if you've done something substantial you toot that horn as loud as you can. No toot, toot, toot.

The day is coming when there

The day is coming when there will not be anymore NFL, there will not be anymore NCAA football or basketball, no more NBA, no more Super Bowls or World Series to enjoy.......when we keep appeasing and giving in to the enemy that will be the end result....in fact shortly after 9/11 those statements were reported coming from some of the fanatical extreme Muslims. If that is what people want then they just might end up getting their wish.....no more baptist churches, no more Methodist churches, no more Churches of God, no more Roman Catholic churches......and the list goes on.....that is the goal of the fanatical enemy we are dealing with.

Morning, Biz...we really don't know that Obama wants to pull out of Iraq. We only know that he says that. Actually promised that while campaigning. Thus far, I see no real relationship between what he says and what he does. Wouldn't it be interesting to start a web site chronicling the lies of the "One" I'm not sure I can afford that much band width.

Waymore and Curly123053, the statement that "Bin Laden wouldn't be at large if Clinton would have taken him when..." may be correct; however, he didn't so it was left to Bush to do the job. I don't seem to recall that Bush spent a great deal of time in that pursuit; seems that he "gave up" rather quickly when he decided to go after Saddam instead. Bin Laden's still around I guess, whose fault is that today? GGpap

It's true that Bush did not

It's true that Bush did not get Bin Laden on his watch, but at least the "animal" couldn't roam free.....He had to continue to hide 24/7 from US forces during the Bush years. It's too bad Slick Willy did not keep up the pressure on Laden....Oh I forgot, more important issues "came up" in the White House!
