SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wright Sinquefield Jordan, 78, formerly of Spartanburg, S.C., died peacefully on Feb. 2, 2009 at Rae-Ann Suburban Nursing Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Born March 8, 1930, Wright grew up on a farm in Wrens, Ga., with eight siblings during the Great Depression. The experiences of his childhood never left him. He was not one to waste a penny, and he grew his own vegetables, recycled, and repurposed everything possible, long before the growing social awareness that being 'green' will help preserve precious resources for future generations. He served his country as a member of the Air Force for four years, after which he earned a B.S. degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, a Masters' degree from The University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. He held various positions in the agricultural and teaching fields during his career, including many years as a professor at Clemson University. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters, and his wife of 29 years, Jewel Askew Jordan. He is survived by his devoted wife of 16 years, Irma Thomoff Jordan of Cleveland, Ohio (formerly of Spartanburg): sister, Helen Jordan Klotz (husband, Gordon) of Lansing, Mich.; daughter Reta Jordan Peery (husband, Briggs) of Atlanta, Ga., and two grandchildren of whom he was especially proud, Eleanor Jordan Peery and Briggs Cooper Peery. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 7 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 350 North Blackstock Road, Spartanburg, S.C. 29301. Friends and family will be received in the church Mission Center immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Building Fund at the above address.
