Mideast column omitted many facts

  • Follow Letters

Responding to the Jan. 29 guest column " Mideast conflict demands resolution," I was appalled that Dr. Hossam Fadel attempted to justify the Hamas regime's terrorism.

There are three points that Dr. Fadel intentionally fails to acknowledge. First, Israel accepted compromise and offered a Palestinian state in 1948, when the United Nations resolution to divide the land was accepted by Israel and rejected by the Arab League. Second, in 1967 when the Israeli government offered to withdraw for peace and this too was rejected by the Arab summit. Also, in 1993 when Palestinians resorted to terror rather than follow the Oslo Accords.

For 60 years Palestinians have always chosen violent options rather than trusting political, nonviolent actions. Dr. Fadel conveniently forgets to mention the numbers of Israelis - innocent men, women and children - who have been killed or wounded by mortars, rockets and suicide bombings over that period.

As a sovereign state, Israel has the right to defend its citizens against those who seek its destruction. Continued daily rocket attacks from the Gaza area into Israel and the avowed purpose of the Hamas regime to eliminate Israel's right to exist illustrate exactly how that government is willing to seek a real lasting peace in the Middle East.

Perspective is what this issue needs. What if Britain made an agreement with Zionists and pushed the UN to propose a partition of Georgia, giving half of it to the Jews to form a "Jewish State". Would the Georgia citizens accept that? Think about it people. Would Georgia citizens let Britain give half of Georgia to the Jews? What if they took it anyway, and waged war against the citizens of Georgia because they resisted? What if they Isolated and imposed sanctions against Georgia? Would you resist? Or just let them have your land? What is you resisted and they bombed you for it, while calling you terrorists for trying to resist? What if the world stood by and watched? What if the America was sending them aid, and selling them weapons to use against the Georgia citizens? Would you rebel? Fight back? Take the blame? Think about it people. Have a little empathy, because in 1948, Zionism wiped Palestine off the map. Be nice to the Jews, they are not responsible for the actions of the Zionists who would prefer not to be singled out, but rather groups with all the Jews so that any criticism can be called antisemitism.

Ga Values

No winners in the mid east, the problem is that we fund both sides even sending $17,000 of our tax money per citizen to Isreal each year. If we cut our aid to BOTH sides they would make peace as it is both sides take our money and keep up this stupidity.

Good points jameshovland....For decades Israel has been allowed to terrorize Palestine and not get called on it...Truth be told a system of apartheid is in effect there, that is the only way Israeli settlers can maintain their control on the people...as a Palestinian you have zero rights... And the Israeli settlers in Gaza and the West Bank are at the root of the problem...Israel is a sovereign nation correct, but the occupation of those two regions is not right...If the region is not stablized the world will be divided over it, and it could lead to the end for all of us...Read the Bible, it speaks about what is going on there today...Are we here in America still puppets and zionist????History wil judge...

When you hear or read Dr. Hossam Fadel's words you know immediately that you are going to be told something that is totally untrue. Did he ever take the hippocratic oath? If it meant helping someone other than a Palestinian or Arab, then he faked it. An educated anti-semitic arab is worse than someone without an education.

The first post is right on. Those folks still hold paper deeds to lands taken by the Israelis, can you imagine where their coming from. Why is it Israels right to rule that territory, because the Bible says so? The analogy in the first post hits the nail on the head. Put yourself in their shoes.

Tujeez1

Well, IF YOU MUST INSIST ON KNOWING.... We(Our Government) pays Israel for NOT Annihilating every arab that crosses their path to Statehood. IF WE (they) didn't pay, then the region would become too unstable to negotiate for your precious oil, that you use in you cars for gas. WHY? I have no Idea...Recently the US Government recieved information that the BAKKEN, a region of the United States, located in Western North and South Dakota and Eastern Montana HOLDS 500+ BILLION BARRELS OF LIGHT SWEET CRUDE. ALSO A DEPOSIT UNDER THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS IN THE WESTERN US HOLD 1.3 TRILLION BARRELS OF OIL. THAT'S RIGHT. WE HAVE MORE OIL IN THE USA THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED!!!!! NOW, WHY CAN'T WE GET IT????? ENVIRONMENTALISTS....THAT'S WHY!!!!!

Tujeez1

You Liberals Are Killing The Palestinians, Pure and Simple as THAT! The Democratic Party is Always for killing Innocent People, LOOK AT THEIR STANCE ON ABORTION!!!!

We missed our best chance to end the violence in the region. After destroying the Iraqi Army in just a few days, we should have planted our flag and claimed this region a US terrority, seized all assets and implemented an American run government. The income from the oil alone would sustain us through this economic calamity. Think of all the money we would save by having permanent military installations in this region. I'm pretty sure our overwhelming presence in the area would have a stabilizing effect on Iran and others countries close by. Most importantly, we would have somewhere to move the Gitmo detainees and could fund even more abortions in this new region.

DonH

Historically, ALL lands across the world have changed hands through conflict. Gaza and Isreal are no different. After enough people have died over it, acceptance and peace prevail, usually when there is no one left to fight. Looks like we have not gotten acceptance to date, and more bombs must fall and bulllets must fly to settle it.
We have a similar problem here in the U.S. The Aztlantists from across our southern border want to take over the western region of our country. One day there will be a conflict to settle that argument, too.
Conflicts over territory are occuring daily around the world. Mankind's tollerance and acceptance are elusive.

americanveteran

Wow, I never looked at it that way, but you are right, the liberals in this country, besides killing millions of babies by abortion are also causing the killing of tens of thousands in the middle east by not allowing us to get to the oil in North and South Dakota. Liberals, they could screw up a one car funeral and also a soup sandwich!

Maybe, we could send all the liberals to the middle east and let them deal with Iran! How long do you think that they would last? It would be "off with their heads" before they could get settled in! Still, it would be a good idea to send them all over there so that this country could go back to being the Good Old USA again, before GOD allows the nation to be punished for our murdering of all the babies that this country has done since abortion was forced down our throats by the liberals and liberal court system that we have today.

GOD Bless the USA and please send all liberals to the middle east!

The worst group of them all are the Jewish settlers. Their arrogance is unmatched. They claim to have a historical right to spread as far as the eye can see. Lebensraum anyone? Racist bunch of war mongers.

noway

You right wingers sure can bring abortion into any discussion, can't you? You just don't get it.

mommie2

Would they be referring to the Dr. Fadel at University Hospital?

dashiel

First, rocks; then bottle rockets. If we allow this kind of behavior to continue, they'll be toilet papering our homes and denying the holocaust ever happened.

wizzardx1

These folks in the mid-east have been fighting for 5 thousand years for one reason or another. What makes ANYONE think that they will stop??????

Mongol

Let us not forget the others who also died during WW2. Millions of Europeans. Let us not forget them. How many Russians dies by the germans and the Soviets HOW MANY?????????????

DMac_357

Tujeez - your political rant is plain dumb! I4PUTT - while we didn't plant our flag, just being in the territory is what started Bin Laden on his rant against the U.S. Remember he wanted to use his fighters that had fought with him in Afghanistan against the Soviets to push the Iraqis out of Kuwait and to defend Saudi Arabia. SA balked and instead chose to "hire" the U.S. as their defenders. UBL understood that the U.S. was going to not only liberate but also occupy regardless of what they said. His thing is that he didn't want infidels occupying the "Holy Land" and we've been there ever since. Whether we planted our flag there or just stayed as occupiers, our economic calamity was coming one way or another. The abortion rant can be saved for an article that actually talks about abortion. AV - did the Bush Administration do anything about abortions in their 8 years in office? I didn't think so!!

Bizarro

The arab world surrounding Israel is a lot like Milosevic in Bosnia with an agenda of ethnic cleansing. Why should we tolerate either.

iletuknow

Israelis are parasites. They are in that location as no one else wanted them at the end of WWII. Cut off American taxpayer funds(10 Billion a year) and you will start to see real progress.

Obamessiah

Mongol, you do realize that Russians were the Soviets during WWII? Please don't post stupid things if you know nothing of history.

Bizarro

The people who would endorse the genocide and removal of the jews from Israel would likely support a similar notion her to remove the blacks, hispanics, and asians from the U.S.-genocide and removal. Sick homocidal lunatics. Sad.

The Mid-east has been warring for centuries and the modern era isn't going to change that--war has become a way of life for these people. Given that, I don't believe they care enough to do anything that promotes peace.

johnsmith

GA Values, you're an idiot, we are not sending Israel (Dr. Evil voice) 5 TRILLION dollars a year. Yep, why can't those stupid Jews just let people kill them in peace? Don't they understand that that is their role? Raise your hand if you think we could solve the "palestinian" problem by moving all the Jews in Israel to...I don't know...North Dakota or something. Yep, anyone with a hand up, dumb as a stump, yep. All that would mean would be suicide bombers in North Dakota. Can you not just put aside your prejudices and preconceptions for ONE minute, and actually listen to what Israel's enemies say about their own goals? They have the goal of killing all the Jews. Very simple. No "subtleties" there, you don't need a sophisticated understanding of their inner motivations..."When the Jews are all dead, our work will be done and Allah will bless us." Nothing too complicated, here... But, of course, Israel can never do anything right...hey! NOW I get it...Israel is like the George W. Bush of nations...you all would find a way to criticize them if every Israeli committed suicide to make Hamas happy...probably call it environmentally damaging or something...

Amazing how some on here attempt to re-write history. The country established by the UN in 1947 called Israel was a British contolled area as was much of North Africa before WW II. The partition of Palestine into two states was decided sna though given little of the land promised, the Israelis accepted the partition. Unsatisfied Arab stae (Egypt, syria and Jordan) waged war and ghot the butts beaten three times (evidently slow learners). Had Israel not been attacked in '67, they would not have occupied Gaza and West Bank. Since that time, however, with world pressure on them, they have attempted to make peace with those in the area know as Palestne, only to be constantly attcked by terrorits such as HAMAS. No one can blame the Israelis for defending themselves and the land that God gave them over 4000 years ago. For a few FACTS try:http://www.adl.org/israel/advocacy/how_to_respond/establishment.asp?xflag=1 and if you want to know how the Arabs treated the Jews try this:http://www.sixdaywar.co.uk/jews_in_arab_countries_intro.htm

Jack, Answer my question. Would Georgia citizens let Britain give half of Georgia to the Jews? That is a valid question, why would you ignore that, and point us to the Zionists prepared 'question and answer' propaganda page, of talking points? Additionally, lets put the whole concept of the promise land into perspective. This all started when nomads from Mesopotamia, after suffering hardship in Egypt, committed a complete genocide in the land of Canaan, in order to claim it as their own. Keep in mind who wrote the books that proclaim the Jews to be "chosen", the land as their "birth right", and genocide in Canaan to be divine wisdom. Keep in mind who wrote the books, and be very aware that most of the commandments given to the "sons of Israel", by Mosses, are in fact against international law. Read it and compare. Is slavery acceptable? Is genocide for any reason acceptable? Are you allowed to stone people for any reason? How can people still worship what is in these books? I can understand the blind faith if the books proclaim you to be "chosen". Religion hold immense power over the Jewish people because of what it says about them, but why does anyone else still believe any of it?

JamesHovland

johnsmith, Stop spreading the disinformation and fear. You sound like a Zionist propagandist. Do you get your talking points from old Bush videos? I spend most of my 'online time' commenting in the Arab media, and discussing these issues with Palestinians, Iranians, etc, and they have no problem with the Jewish people. Hamas specifically, wants the 'Right of Return' for the Palestinians that were displaced by Israel's war against them. Israel does not want Arabs there because they want a "Jewish State". Arabs are OK with the Jews being there, they just want to be able to live there too. Can you imagine being forced from your land and told you can not come back because that would threaten the Jewish identity of the State they built on your land? Try to actually talk to the people. Being told what they want, from the people who don't want them to have it, is not the most reliable way of gaining insight into the situation. Zionism is the problem, and the Arab world understands that. Maybe you should too. Iran's president said that the "Zionist regime" would vanish from the pages of time. The Zionist repeatedly claim that he said "wipe Israel off the map". That's just not true.

disssman

Well now we have had a Jewish LTE response to a Palestinina LTE. Personally, I have never understood our love of a country that likes us only for the money we send. And yes it is easy to defend yourself, if you have unlimited resources (Uncle Sam) for equiping and resupplying your forces. So it shouldn't be any surprise that the IAF has been a consistent winner, we paid for it. BTW why has the american government turned a blind eye to citizens going there to serve in their Army. That is clearly forbidden by our laws, but we allow Jews to do it?
