Mini Theatre will receive sales tax funds

The Augusta Symphony has agreed to give the Augusta Mini Theatre a prorated share of $6 million in special-purpose sales tax money originally thought to be for the Miller Theatre only.

When the symphony first requested funds for its Augusta Theatre District Project, it sought $12 million to restore the historic Broad Street theater and $2 million for the Mini Theatre to finish building its arts school off Deans Bridge Road. City Administrator Fred Russell cut the initial sales tax projects list from $641.2 million to $185.3 million, leaving $6 million for the symphony.

According to a letter Mr. Russell received Monday, the Mini Theatre will get $857,143, leaving $5.1 million for the Miller's restoration.

Teen girl reports she was raped by five men

A teenage girl said she was raped Monday afternoon at a house in Barton Village.

According to a Richmond County sheriff's report, the 14 year-old said she was picked up about noon by two men in an old, white vehicle at the C & K Mart at 2852 Deans Bridge Road. They took her to Barton Village, where they met three other men. The men led the girl into the house, where one pointed a gun at her and told her to sit on a bed. The girl was forced to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana, and was then raped.

The girl was later taken to Murphy Middle School, where she is a student, and released. She reported the incident to a school police officer, who informed the sheriff's department. The men are described as black, ranging in age from 16 to 19.

Gunshot victim dies; police seek suspect

An Augusta man who was wounded in a December shooting died Monday, police said.

Kevin Tanksley, 27, of the 1900 block of Haynie Drive, died of multiple system organ failure about 10:40 a.m. at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, said Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten.

On Dec. 9, Mr. Tanksley was taken to MCG with a gunshot wound to his back, said Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles. Witnesses say Mr. Tanksley and Lance Lampkin were involved in a dispute when both pulled handguns at an apartment on Baywood Drive.

Police are searching for Mr. Lampkin, also 27, of the 2600 block of Carrington Drive, Lt. Peebles said. He faces charges of murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Nightclub shooting is 2nd in past 2 months

A fight at the Spot nightclub in North Augusta led to a shooting early Sunday.

According to a news release from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, police arrived at the club at 1080 Womrath Road about 4:50 a.m. and learned that four people had been asked to leave. After they left, one fired 14 rounds at the three others. A bullet grazed one of the victims, the release said. The victims would not provide police with any information. It was the second shooting at the club within the past two months, the statement said.

Retrial starts for man facing murder charges

A retrial began Monday for an Augusta man accused of killing his estranged wife.

Calvin W. Foster, 38, has pleaded not guilty in Richmond County Superior Court to murder and other charges in the Sept. 27, 2005, shooting death of 34-year-old Daphne J. Foster.

Mr. Foster's 2006 murder conviction was reversed by the Georgia Supreme Court, which ruled it was unfair that the judge did not explain the meaning of a verdict of guilty but mentally ill or mentally retarded to the jury. Mr. Foster had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. He was sentenced to life in prison plus five years.

Woman is granted bond in death of infant son

A 23-year-old Augusta woman facing a manslaughter charge in the death of her infant son was granted a $25,000 bond Monday.

Frances N. Howard has been in jail since October, when she and the baby's father, Matthew C. Reynolds, 20, were charged with murder. In December the grand jury chose to indict Ms. Howard on a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. Mr. Reynolds, who wasn't indicted, was released in December. Damion Lee Reynolds was found dead in the couple's home on Jan. 5, 2008.

Judge James G. Blanchard Jr., who set the bond for Ms. Howard in Richmond County Superior Court, noted she had no prior convictions and has lived in the area all her life

A woman told police she was the victim of a vehicle hijacking in the 2000 block of Travis Pines Drive in Hephzibah late Saturday night.

According to a Richmond County sheriff's report, the woman was driving when a gold-colored Ford Expedition tried to get her to stop. The men drove off in the woman's vehicle and the Expedition. Her vehicle was found on Windsor Spring Road.

As It Is

Good Job to the employees of Food Lion and for the Sheriff's Office Quick response. Now, lets just hope we get a judge that fully understands when someone pulls a knife on another in order to rob them, they need to be put away for quite a long time.

SpeakYourMind

I agree - Good Job Food Lion Employees!

Does_it_really_matter

This is an outrage. I think we should look into banning knives! It is terrible that someone could have this weapon and not have it registered and pull it in a public place. England is already facing this problem and we should take steps now to make sure we register every knife and have money for knife drives to make sure this violence does not happen again! Great job to the brave Food Lion workers.

yak11

What no rioting over the killings? Good Lord where is their perspective?

My_2nd

14 year old raped at noon? she should have been in school i guess. oh well!
she gets what she gets.

AugustaVoter

I hate to agree with someone on a normally horrible act. But I agree with My2nd on that comment. Why was she not at school at noon on a Monday? I bet she had something planned with a "boyfriend" that didn't go the way she wanted it to. He and his friends had other ideas. Anyway, I hope they charge her with truancy. I bet we hear more about this story later on.

My_2nd

true rapes are very rare. so i doubt hers is an exception.

chey

I agree, she should have been in school. But to say "oh well, she gets what she gets" is absurd. It angers me that you would feel that way about it. Yes, in her youth and immaturity, she probably made a wrong decision, but that doesn't mean she should have gotten raped. I hope all the men are found put under the jail.

Dukedirtbag

Forced to drink and smoke pot at gunpoint?? was she raped or did she make up an excuse for being late to school after a party. i mean they took her to school and dropped her off after??

My_2nd

i just re-read the article. who took her to the school? the guys that raped her? sounds like to me that she went to school high and got busted and came up with this bs story to stay out of trouble. it would not be the first time. if anyone should be charged, it should be her mother.

We are so glad the newspaper audience can see that our nephew was released from jail in December on false charges of murdering his infant son. We all knew Matthew was inocent from the beginning, he loved baby Damion more than anything in the world. How many parents do you see carrying the casket of their baby to the grave. His grandaddy as well as many mnay loved ones and friends sold all they had to help his defense, because we all knew he was innocent. But the newspapers as well as tv only wanted to report this because they thought it made news. They didnt even investigate or give our family a chance to tell our side, they only listened to the mothers side. Now who was charged with murder and who is Free. We are a Christian family and knew in the end God would show the way for justice to be done. We have prayed and will continue to pray for Matthew and baby Damion, for no one should have had to go through what they did.The truth always wins in the end!!

InChristLove

My 2nd, you opinions are despicable. This is why so many women do not report rape. This 14 year old may have been cutting school, planning to meet up with a boyfriend for a good time, maybe she wasn't even forced to drink the alcohol but if she was forced to have sex with any one or all of these young men, it is rape. Maybe it happened like you say, she is using it as a coverup story but your comment "true rapes are very rare" and "she gets what she gets" shows just what kind of character you have. Stop and think, if this was your daughter (guilty or innocent) would you want people making these kinds of comments about her.

Concerned Citizen

We all know the riot incident was stupid and very unnecessary and also in the past. Why is it that every time something happens, that is brought up? I disagree with it and I too think it was absurd, but please move on.

cn683

wow......i feel the same way as rocknout. for you to say she gets what she gets is crazy and heart breaking! you should be ashamed of yourselves to say things like that. no person deserves to have things like that done.

disssman

I am glad to see that the Symphony is giving good instructions to the County Commissioners as to how the budget is spent. Finally some adult supervision of the commission. I really thought they wern't part of the necessary budget process though.

Georgiais1

This Lampkin guy looks guilty.

HYPOCRITES 08

WTF do you mean " She gets what she get"? That was stupid as hell. Would you say the same thing if it was your Mother, Wife, Daughter or Sister? Bunch of ignorant dumbazzes.

FallingLeaves

Too many murders in a small area: Judson Boyd recently allegedly murdered by his girlfriend's son on Fairmont St off Thomas Ln just a hop skip and a jump away from Baywood off Thomas Ln on the other side of Wheeless. Take a left off Thomas Ln, Yang Han murdered on Golden Camp Road (unsolved cold case). Also, Robert Dorsey on corner of Cornelia off Thomas Ln & Deans Bridge (unsolved cold case), Isais Selman on Old McDuffie (unsolved cold case), the unidentified male behind Golden Harvest Food Bank (unsolved cold case, now Mr. Tanksley on Baywood off Thomas Ln (suspect being sought). Not to mention Shanequa Carpenter having ties to Sumac Drive off Thomas Ln a very unsettling incident there immediately after her murder. I'm not saying the cases are related, just that there are too many murders happening in a very small geographical area. That's just the ones I remember off the top of my head, there were a few ON Thomas Lane, I just remember name of one, Tollie Mitchell only 29 years old, or Shadowood off Thomas Ln (Safford died due to incident there) What is going on???? My family and I hated to leave the home that belonged to our family since 60 when it was built, but safety 1st.

KingJames

Thank you Concerned Citizen. You know people in Augusta have long memories, but to always bring up a riot is crazy. I agree with you that people need to move on and let it go.

KingJames

Georgias#1, have you not thought that Lampkin might look guilty because you're looking at a mug shot? It's not glamour shots, but a police mug shot. You would probably look guilty, too if the only picture of you we had to look at was a police mug shot. I don't know if he's guilty or not, but to say he looks guilty based on a police mug shoot is kind of weird. Would you smile if you were being booked into jail?

whyme

I thought that the "report for inappropriate comments" was supposed to cut out garbage like the comments about the rape. Guess freedom of speech overrules decency. Not the first time.

disssman

The 16-19 year olds should be veeerrrryyy easy to identify and arrest, so lets see who they were. Should be an arrest this week in fact.

disssman

BTW I was happy to see that one of the punk gunmen died and is no longer roaming the streets with a weapon. We should let the other one out and hope he continues getting rid of the embarassments to civilized society.

disssman

And finally. Mamma's with kids who frequent the Spot club, you know what could happen so when it does please please please don't go on the news crying about what a pillar to society your kid was.

FallingLeaves

I hope the Mini-Theatre uses the funds wisely. Is the Mini-Theatre only for minorities? If so, I really don't think taxpayers should be paying anything at all for a segregated institution. I don't think encouraging segregated institutions is in the best interest of anybody, especially children. I hope it is open to all since all people who buy goods in this county will be subsidizing it.

FallingLeaves

Just for clarity, the Tanksley lived in another neighborhood across Gordon Hwy between Kissingbower Road and Milledgeville Road on Haynie Drive. Lampkin lives on Carrington in Hephzibah, Georgia, also not in the neighborhood where the altercation took place. Baywood Drive (off Thomas Lane Extension) is in that neighborhood which used to be known as Brookwood until a speeder took out the last entrance sign down on Wheeless. Maybe if the article mentioned Lampkin was from Hephzibah, someone would be more likely to spot him.
