the illegal imigrant is a law breaker and should be dealt with by being deported. That being said, the millions of illegal imigrants are not going to be deported under this administration nor were they under the Bush administration. Therefore, we must either change our plans and deport, decide how to quickly process those illegal imigrants who already have jobs and no criminal records allowing our authorities to focus on those who have broken other laws, etc. or come up with another viable solution. Put millions of illegal imigrants out on the street with no jobs, etc. and see where it gets us - chaos and massive law breaking. Some will simply give up the American drean and leave but many wouldn't. Furthermore, like it or not, many imigrants, legal and illegal are very productive members of society. The US couldn't fill all of the needed positions if somehow we could magically deport all illegal imigrants tomorrow. We need to fully secure our borders, deport those with criminal records and see what we can work out from there for others, at least that would be a good start for now.

Lastly, like it or not, many illegals who work in restaurants, construction, manufacturing, mills, plants, etc. have work ethics far superior to most Americans, both black, white and brown. Many employers aren't looking for cheap labor when they hire an illegal, they are looking for anyone with a strong work ethic who will show up and do a good job everyday in fields that require manual labor. Most aren't looking to sit on their butts and wait for the government to send them a check and frankly I would rather support a hard working illegal imigrant who is trying to get ahead and support their family over a lazy good for nothing American who prefers to draw unemployment and live in section 8 housing and use food stamps, etc. I do agree they are illegal but the situation we are currently in has far surpassed simply saying they are illegal and need to be deported so we better figure out how to apporpriatley deal with the situation and also deal with the continued influx of illegals.

As it is, I disagree with your position that we should change our plans. Illegal is illegal, and they are doing incredible harm to our country. They work and don't pay taxes, or they work under a STOLEN identity. They don't just do jobs that no one else will do, they specialize in painting, sheetrock, floor coverings and other construction type jobs. Also any American employer that hires them is breaking the law, and is working against every legal American worker in the United States, not to mention subverting the tax laws. The only alternative to deporting them is to put them in jail and then work them for free.

What and where are these jobs you speak of that those American workers would not take? However, you are probably correct in one respect, the "illegals" you champion (at least a few) today ARE working in the fields, on the roads, and in the eateries in your neighborhood; but, they work for lower wages than American workers once received. This leaves a question: Ms. Norton has the cost of your tomatoes, your highway taxes, or your restaurant bill for dinner decreased since the "illegals' took over all those unwanted jobs? GGpap

Illegal (alien) immigrant advocates have been using the old and tired excuse that they do jobs Americans won't do. Closer examining the issue, one will see that as soon as they can get qualified, illegal (alien) immigrants move on to better paying jobs, and they do take jobs from American citizens. The illegals take advantage of our sociail services that support them until they can establish themselves at a living wage. Much of their earnings go to foreign countries. It's the American tax payer that is subsidising them all the way. It's each one of us that is contributing to the success of the illegals. I support Americans and American taxpayers first. If our government wants to contribute foreign aid, let it be for those within their own country. We here in the U.S. have enough to handle with our own citizens who need our help. We need those jobs for our citizens.

Having worked in the social service field for many years I can tell you that in order to receive services, everyone must either be a U.S. citizen or a legal immigrant/alien. Only an illegal child that is critically ill can receive temporary Medicaid.

Ms. Norton should work at neighborhood medical clinic. She'd see the sheer numbers who flood them and are costing us hundreds of millions every year. My wife has seen it. Ms. Norton should work in law enforcement and see the numbers of illegals that are arrested, often for violent crimes, dui, robbery. These dirtbags are costing our country hundreds of millions. I've seen it. These people don't want to be Americans. They're so proud to be Mexican, Honduran, etc., but they sure as Hell don't want to go back there. Mexico won't deal with the problem. Why should they? It brings billions of dollars into their country. Every country in the world protects their borders, including Mexico. Obama should demand the fence be finished, man it with troops, put listening devices to detect tunnels being dug, and put Coast Guard ships in the waters to guard against illegals coming by sea. We must get control of our borders, now!!!! And if Obama ignores this like Bush did, he will not serve another term.

On one huge point you are absolutely correct Lee-Marie, the illegal is willing to work and work hard for the pittance they receive but it still does not negate the criminality...I understand that all to many times the people in this country refuse to work for the minimum wage but that does not give the illegals the right to take from those who would like to work...All this, people willing to work for less money, has sparked the tidal wave of companies getting used to having people line up to work for less here and in other countries...Now we have an economic collapse in our nation while other countries are growing and benefiting off our slow demise...For our nation to return to solvency it would seem the illegals need to return to their own countries...Americans will work if they are given the chance...Problem is that companies have gotten so used to cheap under the table payrolls without the bothersome taxes demanded by Uncle Sam...

What part of illegal don't you get? The great myth now is that the economy will send them packing back to Mexico. BS. Who do you think employers will keep? The gringo who makes $15 per hour, gets matching funds for with holdings and at least part of his medical insurance paid or the criminal who has invaded our country and will accept only $12 per hour under the table with no deductions or benefits? Their medical treatment is paid for by us because they just show up at the ER with a different name & are treated as indigent. The Mexican invasion has been a true detriment to our economy yet President Bush nor Obama have seen this issue as important as keeping the Mexican vote.

The dims aren't going to do anything to get rid of the illegals and will probably work to make them legal. The reason is, that will increase the dim voter base. BTW every day I pass a house full of "working immigrants" and it is deplorable. What these guys do is work as much as possible, buy nothing, declare they have 20 dependents and pay no taxes, and send their money to Mexico. Bottom line is, their money isn't used to purchase goods and services here, rather, it buys goods and services in Mexico. The good side is the poor slob that owns the SSN they stole will have h___ to pay when the IRS demands taxes for the wages earned against that SSN.

The immigrants will always be here. First, they want to come. Second, the powers that be want them to come. Therefore, they come. The only thing left to us is to deal with it. Treating them poorly is a bad start.

ChikaSC, if they are illegal they are not paying taxes. They are getting paid in cash under the table, completely unaccounted for. This topic is exactly the reason we need a flat tax. That way when the illegals go to Wal-Mart with their unreported, under the table earnings, they will pay the same tax to the government that I do!!!
