Couple flee as they are caught stealing

A man and a woman fled from police after attempting to steal 22 tires from Williams Tire Service on Peach Orchard Road Thursday morning.

A deputy spotted the pair leaving the scene and chased them to a wooded area, where they fled from their vehicle, a Richmond County sheriff's report said. The deputy found the tires inside the vehicle and returned them to the store's owner.

Mother says her son was fondled by man

An Augusta mother told Richmond County investigators that her 7-year-old son was fondled by a man while walking to school last week.

The child, who attends Collins Elementary School, said a man drove by him in a car and made a lewd gesture, according to a sheriff's report. The man then exited the car and touched the boy in the groin. The child said the man was in his 20s and cross-eyed, the report said.

10-year-old will not be charged with assault

Criminal charges won't be filed against a 10-year-old Columbia County special needs pupil, who is accused of assaulting a school bus aide Thursday morning, according to Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris.

The girl's mother had been having difficulty with the Evans Elementary School pupil before the school bus arrived at 8 a.m. at Arrowood Mobile Home Park off Wrightsboro Road near Grovetown, Capt. Morris said.

When she boarded bus, the pupil reportedly became unruly, striking a 66-year-old bus aide in the face and kicking her.

An ambulance was called to evaluate the aide, who was not taken to a hospital. Capt. Morris said she would not press charges and any disciplinary action will be handled through the school system.

Board agrees to sell vacant school to city

The Richmond County Board of Education pulled the Floyd Graham School off the list of surplus properties up for competitive bid Thursday.

Rather than continuing with its process of allowing the public to bid on the vacant school, the board instead sold it directly to Hephzibah to provide additional parking for the city's cemetery.

The city of Hephzibah agreed to pay the appraised value of $235,000, plus an additional $30,000, which the board would have had to spend to remove gas tanks on the property.

Board member Joe Scott, the lone vote against the sale, said he would rather have waited a week until the auction had closed to see if the board could get a better deal.

Vice President Alex Howard said the sale was the best move to make considering the state of the economy.

What's a 7yr old child doing

What's a 7yr old child doing walking to school alone anyway? I don't care even if you live next door to the school !

The ten year old girl

The ten year old girl certainly shouldn't be charged with assault, but she should be removed from an environment neither she nor the system is able to contend with. Mainstreaming these children is mean to everyone.

The couple ran off and left

The couple ran off and left their vehicle full of tires? Wouldn't that make them easy to trace?

I don't feel our society

I don't feel our society provides a safe enough environment for my children to walk around unescorted. Some cross eyed perv might show up.

Chances are that if they

Chances are that if they stole the tires, they more than likely stole the vehicle. My thing is, they must have failed math? They were two tires short from making it six complete sets.

Good one!LOL The parent

Good one!LOL The parent should feel some guilt for allowing such a young child to walk to school alone. Don't they read the news? Even my own wife won't walk alone around the block for exercise. Good one mom, its your fault your son was groped

There is nothing, nothing

There is nothing, nothing funny about a seven year old beign molested.Mother what were you thinking! You were not thinking. There is no reason for, a seven year old, walking anywhere by himself,What were you doing, that you could not have walked him to school. You can not depend on society to protect your child.Thank God, this did not turn into a murder of your child, because of your neglect.

"What's a 7yr old child doing

"What's a 7yr old child doing walking to school alone anyway?" --- Used to be that way here for 1st graders on up who lived less than a mile from school. Yep, 5 year-olds used to walk to school, in rain/sleet/11 degree mornings. Didn't stop perverts then, and even if they rode buses 1 block away from school, wouldn't prevent the perverts doing it then, too.

wow. I am appalled. Why would

wow. I am appalled. Why would a 7 year old be walking to school alone anyway. Mom, get your butt up out of bed and walk with him. Or if you are working, hire someone to walk with him. There is no excuse for this except for negligence. If this was last week, why is it just getting in the paper now. What does this guy look like, what kind of car was he driving, I mean, if we have a molester out there jumping out of cars to molest our children, this is a serious issue and a description of some sort should have been put in the paper.

when i was in elementary me

when i was in elementary me and my friends used to walk to school. Did somebody say dont you watch the news. No wonder why some people are so afraid. The news needs eyes stuck on the tv to get ratings. Several studies show whites love to watch crime on tv. I don't know why but thats the way it is.

All children in elementary

All children in elementary school in Richmond Co get picked up at their door. Anything different is parents choice. It is because of lack of sidewalks in many areas. Middle and High have bus stops. Stupid mother!

"wow. I am appalled. Why would a 7 year old be walking to school alone anyway." ---- No one did in those days. White or Black, you wouldn't have found a parent anywhere. You were a sissy anyway if mom followed you to the busstop. Boy, have times changed, kids are treated like china, and the results are spoiled back talking and behavioral problem brats.

Praetorian it isn't sec8

Praetorian it isn't sec8 because they live in a trailer and section 8 only pays for houses without wheels. As to the children, why didn't the police stop all other actions and catch this pervert. When I was young, that would have been mission #1, not catching speeders etc. As to the Hephzibah sale, I wonder why they didn't wait one more week and MAYBE get the best deal.

Sandy- you have proved many

Sandy- you have proved many times you are not the sharpest tack. You cannot even defend any of your ignorent statements.
I will watch MY 11 year old at the bus stop in the dark because of the man that is fully grown living with his mommy on the bus corner( I'm sure from your era Sandy) smoking pot and drinking all day in our otherwise very nice and quiet neiborhood.
So when something happens, your ignorent butt will not be saying anything about my child and his Mom not watching him. Can't have both ways. I offer no apolizies on how my husband and I raise our children to ANYONE.
We also help in the community- do you Sandy?

The rate of stranger

The rate of stranger molestation isn't any greater per capita than it was in 1940, and it's very rare. Kids used to go everywhere by themselves. The ones you really need to worry about are your relatives and friends- they are the ones that are the molesters. But these same parents that see a pervert behind every bush have no problem letting their kids go look at the toys in WalMart, drop them off at the library, drop them off at a water park, and let them go to the Mall with friends. Those are far more dangerous places. You have to let go of them SOMETIME. And what does "the man that is fully grown living with his mommy on the bus corner( I'm sure from your era Sandy) smoking pot and drinking all day in our otherwise very nice and quiet neiborhood" do with child molesters? I bet there are a whole lot of drinkers and pot smokers in your "quiet neighborhood" but they aren't child molesters.

Hopefully, the 10 y.o.

Hopefully, the 10 y.o. student who assaulted her bus aide will experience a consequence which will motivate the child to avoid assaulting again. Here's also hoping that the child does not avoid disciplinary consequences as a result of a misconception of "the manifestation doctrine."

"I will watch MY 11 year old

"I will watch MY 11 year old at the bus stop in the dark because of the man that is fully grown living with his mommy on the bus corner" ----- Do you fear the tooth fairy, too? Kids will have to grow up eventually, you can't shelter them forever. They will fall, and skin their knees even. You can take reasonable steps to ensure your kid(s) are safe, but you can't have them around your apron strings 24/7. If a bad guy wanted your kid, there's not much you can do about it, sorry. They are snatched even beside your side, as bad people do bad things, and don't care even if daddy with a shotgun was around -- they're predators, and if they wanted Johnny, they'll kill you all to get him (as that tragic Idaho murder/abduction showed). Teach your kid what's right; let them know what 911 is; don't let them talk with strangers (too many kids do this now), but let them BREATHE.
