Perdue has 40 days to pay $21 million

ATLANTA --- Gov. Sonny Perdue is facing $21 million in personal debt after he took out a massive loan last year for his two agricultural businesses, according to public records obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Records reveal the governor got the loan from AgGeorgia Farm Credit in Perry on collateral worth less than 20 percent of the loan's value, an unusual move, the newspaper reported.

Mr. Perdue declined to comment on the loan, which is due by March 1.

"He's a small businessman," said Bert Brantley, Mr. Perdue's spokesman. "As small businesses and small-business owners around the state know, sometimes you have to personally sign for loans for your business."

Because he is not running for office again, Mr. Perdue is not required to disclose the details of the loan.

The loan is worth almost three times his personal assets of $6.1 million, which he disclosed in his latest statement of his finances in 2006.

Mr. Perdue did not place his financial interest in a blind trust while in office.

The governor has said his Bonaire grain businesses -- Houston Fertilizer & Grain Co. and AGrowStar LLC -- would have suffered if he had put them in a blind trust.

AgGeorgia accepted collateral worth just 19 percent of the loans, according to Houston County Superior Court documents. He put up his Bonaire home, worth about $1.6 million, and his businesses and all their assets, worth about $2.3 million.

Most banks require collateral of at least 50 percent, experts say.

William Newberry Jr., the chief executive of AgGeorgia, declined comment on the loan.

According to campaign documents, Mr. Perdue's 2006 gubernatorial campaign received $6,770 in donations from eight of the bank's board members, their close relatives or companies they control, the newspaper reported.

Sonny got a sub-prime business loan. The left should be proud of him. If he defaults, a government subsidy should step in to prevent him from losing his business. The stupidity of the sub-prime situation becomes pretty obvious to the oblivious left when a Republican does the same thing as the collateral free borrowers. This is the EXACT practice initiated by the CRA of the Carter administration and promoted by the deregulation of the Fannie and Freddie of the Clinton administration. It's the EXACT reason the system collapsed, leading to a world wide recession.

justus4, a sweetheart loan is a drastically reduced interest rate, like Senator Dodd got from the Fannie Mae he oversees.

Motorman5039

A sweetheart loan is a loan that doesn't wipe the borrower out...I wouldn't call this a sweetheart loan...

This is just 'classic.' I love the fact that our Governor is proposing budget cuts, proposing laws, cutting corners and probably giving himself a 'hefty' payraise each year...and the fruitcake can't even balance his own finances! This should make Georgian's feel real confident about their State Tax money!?!?!
Get this hammerhead out of office...how can you trust someone with your money when they can't even manage their own?

DuhJudge

Wait a minute. Experts say that most loans require 50% collateral? That is not right. Most banks will not lend more than 70% of the value of the security collateral and it would still require the personal guarantee. So, technically he should not have been able to get a loan for more than about $4 million. What in the world would he have spent that kind of money on unless it was speculative? However, just because the loan has matured, does not mean he doesn't have it to pay back. He may have put it into CDs.

db16, you're probably a multi-millionaire and know everything about finances. Or, reality may exist. (When you base your comments on the word probably, you shouldn't write like you're capable of intelligent thought)

yikes

Bet some benefactor will bail him out if he can't make the loan payment in March (quid pro quo).

db16

unfortunately...patricia...I am a Georgia Taxpayer and have watched my taxes be pi##ed away by him for years. Have also seen him screw many folks every way but sideways! You, on the other hand, must not have an understanding of finances and might be part of the problem and not the solution. I was taught, by my Grandmother (God rest her soul) to live within your means. Beer drinkers pockets and champagne tastes is not a good mix! Perhaps this will be an eye opener? And...just some reinforcement of the problem of folks trying to live outside of their means?

soldout

You need the Dave Ramsey financial peace course even if you are a millionare governor.

Who voted for sonny perdue again? Oh right the same state that voted for Mccain.

db16

and...btw patricia...your comment within the parenthesis made 110% NO SENSE. Re-read, edit and then re-write it. Perhaps your intelligent thought will help you? LOL

I wonder what got his attention every day, running his business or running the state. Isn't it just amazing that he is classified as a SMALL business? Oh well he is a CONservative so I guess he did the right thing.

disssman

Patricia I wonder what kind of intelligent thought went into electing this buffon? Did he meet the most important criteria, being CONservative?

TechLover

PT doesn't have intelligent thought. She just parrots what she hears on right wing radio then tries to be like them and insults the intelligence of any who disagrees with them. She (like Rush and the others) has a bit of a God complex).

db16

so Tech...what you are saying is that PT could give you her 'two cents' and she'd still get change back? LOL
I kind of figured that she wasn't running on all cylinders? Perhaps she should call the elevators union to have her elevator serviced since it hasn't gone to the top floor for a long time? I never realized that there were so many 'stupid' people until I started reading some of these postings...they surround us!!!
SCARY!

The Atlanta newspaper is concerned because Sonny Perdue (no relation to North Carolina Gov. Beverly, thank goodness) is your governor and he got Georgia into debt.

1941

He got the loan because he was the governor? I wonder how many favors he have done for certain people?

justthefacts

Good question mimsy. I have often pondered the same thing about Obama and convicted felon Tony Rezko.

wizzardx1

A crook is a crook. Can't dispute fact

Gov. Sonny Perdue announced he's getting tough on frivolous law suit in Georgia,so you think the governor is concern about a 21 million loan debt this also has been classified by the Governor's office a frivolous debt.
