Couple dies in wreck near their Greer home
GREER --- South Carolina state troopers say a couple has died after their car hit a tree on a rural road about a mile from their home in Greer.
Troopers say they were in a speeding 1997 Saturn that ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree Saturday night.
Spartanburg County Coroner's Investigator Ken Toney says John Godfrey, 60, died at the scene, and Carolyn Pemberton, 52, died about an hour later.
17-year-old arrested in other's shooting death
COLUMBIA --- Authorities say a teenager has been arrested in the shooting death of another teen at a home in Columbia.
Police say they took 17-year-old Xavier Roach into custody Sunday night and charged him with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon. Authorities say Mr. Roach shot 17-year-old Nigel Hampton in the chest after they argued Saturday night.
Mr. Roach remains in the Richland County jail, awaiting a bond hearing.
Marine buried 65 years after being shot down
CHARLESTON --- Maj. Marion Ryan McCown Jr. is finally at rest in South Carolina.
The World War II aviator was buried with full military honors Sunday, 65 years after he disappeared during a dogfight with a Japanese fighter over the Pacific. His remains were found last year inside the wreckage of his Corsair fighter on a mountainside in New Guinea.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports McCown was buried alongside his mother's grave in the Unitarian Church of Charleston cemetery.
He was remembered as a member of the Marine Fighter Squadron known as the "Hell's Angels." He was 27 when he went missing while flying escort on a mission to bomb a Japanese air base in New Guinea.
