No snow expected in Augusta

It is unlikely Augusta will see any snow accumulation today, although emergency and traffic officials will be watching.

"We are south of the area where the greatest concern for heavier snowfall amounts are expected," said Pam Tucker, Columbia County Emergency Services director.

Earlier forecasts called for a 60 percent chance of snow today. Portions of upstate South Carolina remain under a winter storm warning, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches forecast in some northern counties. The Augusta area will have mostly rain.

But as a precaution, the county's Emergency Operations Center will be open at 3 a.m. today to monitor road conditions.

The forecast calls for lows tonight around 19 degrees, followed on Wednesday with highs in the mid-40s.

I saw snow every winter, many times each winter, when I lived on the Illinois-Wisconsin border. It was cold and wet. I moved to Augusta 36 years ago and have seen snow lay 4 or 5 times, never for a 1/2 day, and I've seen 2 hellatious ice storms. If I want to see snow suitable for skiing and sledding, I'll return to cold country. For now, I'm glad the global warming is keeping the snow at bay. Thank you Al Gore.

PT, I was born and raised in Freeport, IL in the 40's and 50's. Where did you live?

whynot2

Have enough of a chance of snow as we do Santa coming in July. Guess since we havent reached record numbers of deer hits yet there has to be a reason to have her name in the paper.

pofwe

5 postings & nobody mentions the thug robbing the Pizza Hut at 2625 Georgetown Drive. It ain't even news anymore is it? Robbing & stealing is just a way of life in Richmond county. There is nothing new under the sun. Wait 'til you are the victim. I'm surprised it was even in the paper, it is so mundane. Is it not?

SCGAL53

I'm getting some flurries here. It won't last, but it is fun to watch.

gnumbgnuts

Slow this morning. Everyone on the short bus to the coronation?

HYPOCRITES 08

What happened? Did you miss it? You can aways wear your nice little helmet and watch from your rubber room.

gnumbgnuts

Helmets are hard to come by right now. Tardocrats bought 'em all. How do you know about my room?

Pam Tucker is worse than Caroline Kennedy with her use of "you know" when she is speaking. Mercifully, the Chronicle edits those "you knows" out.

dani

It's mundane when it happens in that area. b-o-r-i-n-g!

Milk, milk, milk, bread, bread, bread. Must have milk and bread.

disssman

Tech lover I have lived here many years and can't understand the run on bread and milk in the event of bad weather. But you can bet the Bi-Lo will be sold out of both before lunch. Is that all that people eat when the weather is bad? As for me the longest I have been socked in by weather is about an hour or two.

TakeAstand

hahaha pofwe!!!! I think you are right!!!!!!!!

SandyK2005

"Is that all that people eat when the weather is bad?" ------ No but it's a run on hot chocolate (it needs milk) and toast to go with it. Snow without hot chocolate is like the USA without apple pie!

PatT, if you've been in Augusta for 36 years then you must remember blizard of 1973? It snowed in February of that year. I was born the day after. My mom said it wasn't cold when she came home from the hospital, just lots of snow on the ground (back then women went home the day after they delivered). I can safely say that I have never seen snow on my birthday, and wish that I could this year. The closest I came was when I visited DC a few days after my birthday in 2001.

griesella

The snow is now sticking on my shrubbery and the boat cover. I hope it sticks around long enough for the children to see and enjoy.

mable8

Well, it's snowing where I live, but not sticking at the moment. There was quite a bit of sleet in the early morning hours, but no rain to speak of. Once again, the weatherman was wrong!

patriciathomas

KJ, I was in Illinois for that storm. We got 23 feet and it took 3 days for the bulldozers to reach my house. The snow was too deep for plows to get through. I followed the 'dozer to the nearest paved road (country roads were gravel back then) and turned south. By the time I got to Augusta, the only sign of the snow was all of the stories people were telling about their experience. Since then, global warming has kept the snow away. Thanks to Al Gore.
