You're bailing out rich CEOs

  • Follow Letters

The name of the game is greed. And your tax dollars are at work.

While individuals struggle to make ends meet, greedy executives and their companies will use the bailout money to stay very comfortable. E.G. Jay Wintrob, of AIG, earned $2.5 million last year. Other executives will get more than $500,000 to stay through 2009. Peter Kraus of Merrill Lynch will get a golden parachute of $25 million for two months on the job. Capital One Financial CEO Richard Fairbanks: $73.1 million in pay last year. Bank of America chief Kenneth Lewis, $23 million last year.

Neither bank has indicated it will cut CEO pay.

We were told these businesses were losing money, Well, we know where some of it went. So be happy that these greedy people and these businesses were bailed out. Average tax-paying workers like us can rest easy knowing these executives won't be having to tighten their budgets or join the unemployment line.

What do you expect when you implement socialism in a grand scale?....Honesty?

GACopperhead

This isn't socialism, it's the Bush administration sending more money to the wealthy. More of PT's "redistribution".

ColdBeerBoiledPeanuts

copperhead, you say it's the "Bush Administration" but didn't BO suspend his campaign just to promote this? You seem to be throwing rocks at your own window my man!

GACopperhead

No, McCain suspended his campaign, you were probably one of the people who bashed BO for staying away.

patriciathomas

GaC, The redistribution program of the CRA began this trip down the slippery slope and the enabling guarantees of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac all contributed to the socialist perspective of "leveling the playing field". Robbing Peter to pay Paul has never worked. The economy will collapse if we try it. Or didn't you notice?

Bizarro

Least you forget this a Congress plan and they have just given away billions with no friggin clue what is going on. No one is telling where the money is going-ask the banks-Ahh we don't know, etc. etc.etc. It is criminal as Congress didn't put any "worthwhile" conditions (except their pork) and then didn't do anything to address the problems. Impeach Congress!!!!!!

GnipGnop1

Those guys must be members of the local bankers 157. Funny how we don't want to help the car companies but we will throw these bankers cash hand over fist.

GACopperhead

Folks, Congress OKed a plan that Bernanke and Paulson recommended, both of them being Bush appointees. Since the "rescue" plan was approved, the Bush appointees have gone totally away from what they insisted was going to correct the problem and have not IMPLEMENTED ANY of the oversight that they swore would occur, nor did they implement anything, basically that was intended. Since Congressional approval of the plan, it has changed several times, without Congressional approval. This sits entirely on the shoulders of the Bush administration. As was testified to Bush's "oversight" committee, the banks lent some, still have some and basically refused to show what they are doing with the money. But that's ok, because it's being done by Bush and his cronies, right Repubs?

GACopperhead

Well, PT, Bush had 8 years of Presidency, with 6 years of a Republican majority Congress, and you will STILL blame Democrats. BRILLIANT! Bush BORROWED billions from CHINA for his first economic stimulus, and you blame DEMOCRATS! BRILLIANT! Bush gave huge tax breaks to the wealthy, to stimulate job growth and the economy, and we are where today? BRILLIANT! You cannot continue to blame Democrats for Bush's ineptitude, greed and ignorance....but then you are just like him......

patriciathomas

Okay, once again GaC, Bush had four years of a Repub congress and still was unable to turn the tide of the wave of redistribution represented by subprime loans because of the inertia of the past 20 years of execution and because most members of congress were deeply invested in the scam by this time. Bush was also unable to do anything about social security because so many in congress were using it to buy votes. The other bits of information you like to stick to the outside of the current economic situation seem to have you totally confused as to their relationship and influence on the current situation. Blame....it's unlimited service in congress without accountability. Your messiah won't have any better luck dealing with that situation. I'm sure you'll justify all of his actions though, after all, he's black.

Bizarro

GACopper Congress took Bush's plan and then changed it with the Dems adding huge amounts of irrelevant pork too. They didn't just accept and run with the Bush plan but "supposedly" were going to add accountability, etc. Didn't happen. Apparently tax cuts don't work so the only way we can get out of this mess is to raise everyones taxes. It is inevitable. Obama's plan is starting to sound like a Bush plan-giving consumers a 500-1000 dollar rebate is a futile effort too. Obama has been so downbeat lately. I'm gonna do this but we are still screwed message doesn't evoke a lot of confidence.

I4PUTT

Wow, GAC. Your guy won, supported this bailout from day one, thinks the tax cuts for business are good for the economy right now, decided to delay raising taxes on the wealthy because it would be bad for the economy right now, is supporting the largest give away ever right now, claims there will be no pork included, which is clearly untrue and is proposing new programs we have no money to support, yet you seem so angry at President Bush. Is that just easier?

GACopperhead

PT, I happen to be Caucasian, so your racist crap don't hunt. From 2001 til 2003, in the Senate it was 50-50, with a majority of Repubs in the House. From 03 til 06 it was Repub majority in both. From 06 til now, 51-50 Dem in the Senate, including Leiberman, who is a closet Republican, which is no real majority, and I can't find house numbers, though I know it's a Dem majority. Many Repubs voted against regulating banks in 05, thanks to lobbying specifically targeting mostly Repubs. Your argument doesn't hold water. None of you answers the fact that Bernanke and Paulson haven't followed the plan that they sold to Congress, either.

GACopperhead

Pt, you're right about one thing, I don't think Obama can get us out of the mess the Republicans have made of our country. Hope you enjoy the fruits of your past votes.

Bizarro

Don't you all find it refreshing that after eight years of a Rep "culture of corruption" we can now enjoy CHANGE-the next four to eight years of a Dem "culture of corruption". Jeez!! I've always been amazed how some people will have a blanket trust of certain people with personal matters like financial guides, physicians, politicians, pastors, etc. You have to be the "expert" of your own life.

justthefacts

GaCopper, please, before you put the total blame for the housing crisis on Republicans, google Barney Frank. And you know, because it has been stated many times. Democrats recieved far more contributions from Fannie Mae than Republicans.

You're right that those CEO's should not be making that much money in return for failed policies. Their SHAREHOLDERS should demand that that practice cease. There is no justification whatsoever for the government to make that demand, however, IF the government is acting APPROPRIATELY. Using the "greedy CEOs" argument when opposing all the bailout cash is fine, as far as it goes, except that the real problem is the bailout, not the CEO salary. If a company has lost tens of billions of dollars, then CEO PAY in the tens of millions is largely irrelevant. It's the CEO's DECISIONS, that led to losses, that the shareholders need to punish. Unfortunately, we too often use the ill effects of government interference, to justify add'l govt interference. Sort of like justifying mandatory motorcycle helmet laws because those who don't wear helmets end up "costing the taxpayers $" when they have an accident. Well, the problem there is not the lack of a helmet, it's the assumption that you can do any damnfool thing and expect the govt to subsidize your hospital stay if you get hurt. Long story short: easiest way to keep corporations from paying exorbitant CEO salaries is NOT TO BAIL OUT anyone

SandyK2005

"Bush BORROWED billions from CHINA" --- No, congress and the senate did. Which means both parties are guilty of selling our birthright to the LOWEST bidder. The greatest traitors to this country are in those two houses. THEY are the criminals that allowed ALL of this to occur. A president can only suggest to support a bill and veto if he doesn't approve. But when he does and those damn houses overturn it, the blame isn't on the president, it's those 15 minute soundbite political thugs called congressmen and senators (and the voters who are dumb enough to vote for them to goto Washington!).

patriciathomas

GaC, you pick a small point and write as though it were a root cause or a deciding factor in actions taken. You need to look at more of the overall picture. A lot of things happen in congress that isn't to anyone's liking. If you look at your messiah's new plan, it's exactly like Bush's plan except he's not getting the Democrat road block in his way and he wants to handle our trillion dollar deficit by adding another trillion to it. I'm glad you're white, why does that make me a racist? If you want to be a little more correct, call me an elitist since I just think you're ignorant (and proud of it). I'm certain viable knowledge will cure your problem, but I'm not certain you'll be as proud.

stillamazed

One administration inherits problems from the previous and this country was not great when Bush took over and it certainly isn't great now and there will still be problems when Obama leaves office, there is no miracle cure here folks. Our goverment including both parties have made huge mistakes. We have turned into a country of greedy, selfish people and the rest of the world knows it. All we can do is pray that things will get better but I personnally doubt it.....it's all been allowed to get to out of control, from crime, drugs, illegals and Wallstreet, it's all about the greed for almight dollar.

Bizarro

Ha! See there GaCopper. You better listen to Patrica. When it comes to "ignorance" she really knows what she is talkin about. Get it. hee, hee, hee. She is an "ignorant expert"-isn't that an oxymoron. Sorry. Can't help myself. Perhaps I am the moron-my apologies to you both (least till the next comic opportunity at your expense). I was thinkin about your seven year hiatus Copper. I remember a decade or so ago I tried to "punish" my wife by cutting her off-my plan months to a year (I know, I know an idiotic idea which also punished me). I lasted less than a week. That is the resolve of a man. Why we allow men to serve in political office is just insane. Studies show women more aggressive than men, better at multi-tasking, less egomaniacal driven and more knowledge driven, and more immune to power corruption. What a different world we would live in. hee, hee, hee. I hope you know I deeply love ya both. Bizz[filtered word]o.

The last time we had a public aching for retribution, they gave us the Great Depression. Nevermind history or sanity. Careless lending & spending got us into this hole and careless lending & spending will get us out.

hossiv

Wow big surpirse that GAC is putting all the blame on Bush! I'm shocked! While your googling Barney Frank check out Chris Dodd. You are right, Dems had nothing to do with the demise the economy. It is clear to any person with half a brain that the Subprime mortgage mess is the main reason for where we are today. Other than recieving large campaign contributions from Fannier Mae and Freddie Mac, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd ignored several warning signs and objected to The BUSH Adm and RePUBLICANS request for more oversight into FANNIE AND FREDDIE. As recently as last year Dodd denied rumors of trouble calling Fannie and Freddie "fundamentally strong", and said they were in "sound situation" and "in good shape" and to "suggest they are in major trouble is not accurate". YOu are an idiot if you think that the Bush Adm is responsible for all of the current economical problems. INstead of listening to MSNBC, CNN, NYT or whatever liberal garbage you subscribe to, try and get some facts. The Repubs including current SEC chair (COX, a Rebublican) and Bush definitely deserve some of the blame, but anyone that lumps all of it on them are just Uneducated Liberal IDIOTS like yourself!

edst4

Ouch somebody else calling somebody an idiot. Well hossiv I have reached number 1552 idiots. How many do you have on your list hossiv

jack234

desperate times call for desperate measures. Ask any economist. HELLO! HELLO! HELLO! If peter got the money, that's where you go.

Lorraine

George W. Bush and his cronies will be exiting the White House on January 20th. not a minute too soon. They sure have given new meaning to the definition of a bankrupt economy. This administration has been a complete failure, not forthright, and failed to admit that the country was in a recession only until several weeks ago.

jack234

I thought "fundamentally strong" was McCain's demise, HELLO! HELLO! HELLO!

hossiv

Well I'd say at least 75% of the people on here do not bring facts with them, so its pretty easy to spot the mentally challenged ones.

jack234

I saw Bush's rose colored glasses on e-bay for sale. HELLO! HELLO! HELLO! Along with his tunnel vision. (IRAQ)

hossiv

Jack234, McCain did say that but unfortunately for you and your liberal buddies, he wasnt saying that about Fannie and Freddie like your buddy Chris "CountryWide" Dodd stated last year. By the way, John McCain isnt the next prez, so move on with swipes at him. HI! HI! HI!
