Children will share in historic ceremony

Inauguration balls aren't just for adults.

On Jan. 20, area children will have their own party at the Augusta Library to celebrate the swearing-in of Barack Obama as president.

"This is a historic event, especially because we are having the first African-American president of the United States. So, if they are having a party in D.C., then we wanted to do the same thing here in Augusta." said Eileen McCoy, the children's department manager for the library. "We figured that this would be a nice way to introduce children to the president and what all the events surrounding the inauguration mean."

The ball, geared toward children ages 5-9, will be in the library's auditorium.

There will be a speaker to explain what the president does, term length of the office, the history of the presidency and the activities that surround the swearing-in of the president. The children will view a clip of the swearing-in and receive a souvenir commemorating the event.

"While we want the children to enjoy the ball, we also want them to learn and understand the importance behind the event," Ms. McCoy said.

Music and dancing for the children will follow the educational portion.

"This is going to be a special event for the kids and their parents, and we're really excited about having this event for them," she said.

The program is free, but tickets must be reserved because of limited space. Only 60 tickets are available.

Those who attend must dress in semiformal wear or in their "Sunday best," Ms. McCoy said.
