WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Bess S. Malone, 79, of Winston-Salem died Monday, January 5, 2009, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born November 27, 1929, in Augusta, Georgia, the daughter of the late Gus and Olga Smaragdis. She grew up in Augusta, graduated from the University of Georgia, and became a sixth grade teacher and later a homemaker. She lived in Alexandria, VA, Atlanta, GA, Memphis, TN, and Fort Worth, TX before moving to Winston-Salem in 1968. She was an active member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and a long time member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was an avid bridge player, a voracious reader, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She is survived by a sister, Mary Zumpos, of Athens, Greece; two daughters, Kathleen Malone (W-S) and Christy Schenck (Lenoir); two sons, Bill Malone (W-S) and Mike Malone (Margie) (Columbia, SC); three grandchildren: Lauren Schenck, Kathryn Malone, and Ryan Malone; and two nephews: Costa Zumpos (Koula) (Athens, Greece) and Peter Zumpos (Clearwater, FL). The Trisagion service and visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 7, from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Greek Orthodox Church. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 8, at the Greek Orthodox Church. A Trisagion service will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Augusta, GA at 12 noon followed by burial at Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, GA at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, January 9. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 435 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
