Dear Mr. President

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Augusta Chronicle invited students to write letters to President-elect Obama detailing what they would like him to do as president. The newspaper received more than 400 entries. Selected letters are being printed in The Chronicle and posted online at augustachronicle.com/president.

Grand-prize winners in the elementary, middle and high school divisions will be published the week of Mr. Obama's inauguration. After his installation as the 44th president of the United States, the letters will be mailed to the White House.

Dear Mr. President,

I congratulate you for winning the election and becoming the first African-American president. I understand that you want to make a change and I believe that you can. There are some things that I really believe in and want you to do as president. These are issues that America has acquired before you won the election: homelessness, global warming, and HIV and AIDS.

First, did you know 2.3 to 3.5 million people in America will or have already experienced homelessness? When you go to a big city or even a small town you see homeless people. For example in Atlanta there are people living under bridges. I cannot see how some people sleep at night knowing that they can help those people and they don't. The homeless people experience freezing cold weather and have no money or food. Why can't someone take it upon themselves to help them? I am just a kid and there is little I can do to help this cause but you are the president now; anything is possible.

Secondly, global warming has a HUGE effect on everything. We can resolve this in many ways: one big way is pre-cycling and recycling. We could have this in schools, in public places, and we could have a prominent person endorse it so that everyone would want to do it. You could help the auto manufacturing companies pay to make eco-friendly automobiles.

Lastly are HIV and AIDS. These diseases have taken our society by storm. Anyone is at risk for HIV or AIDS and scientists are in need of your help and support to find a cure. People make mistakes and America is a country of forgiveness and love so let's reach out and be compassionate for the people with HIV and AIDS.

I know I'm just a kid but every person has the ability to make a difference. You are the president now and you have more power than any of us individually but together, the U.S. will be a new country. We can make a difference.

Sincerely,

Amanda Stewart, eighth-grader, Grovetown Middle School, Grovetown

First. Homelessness. Most of them choose to live like that. You could have a bake sale to help the rest of them.

Second. Global warming is bull.

Last. HIV and AIDS. Don't sleep with everyone you see. And it's not as big a problem as heart disease. You could have a bake sale to help out too.

Hey stupid (wribbs), most people DON'T choose to live homeless. If you spent 24 hours homeless, you'd know what homeless people go through. Global warming is real. Take a look at the recent heat wave we just had.

This student has written a well constructed letter. She seems to have a good head on her shoulder for an eighth grade student. The person (wribbs) should be proud to have a young person who thinks of others. God bless this child.

What is wrong with you people?! These are children...who actually show an interest in our government and THEIR future. You need to give the credit where credit is due! Ease up on these children.
