Drug investigation leads to 20 arrests

  • Follow Metro

Authorities arrested 20 people Tuesday in connection with a major Richmond County drug distributor.

Authorities fanned out across the area in a "mopping up" operation connected to the Nov. 21 arrest of Carlos Jermaine Hughes and the search of two homes on Walton Trail and Apple Valley Drive, according to Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Allan Rollins.

Mr. Hughes is accused of transporting cocaine into the Augusta area from Atlanta, Sgt. Rollins said. He is accused of distributing it via a countywide network.

"He had a pretty good distribution ring, and it was all the way around town," Sgt. Rollins said. "What we did was go out and pick up the lieutenants of the operation."

According to a federal indictment issued against Mr. Hughes and several others, the operation dates back to at least 1999.

"We learned about it over a year ago, and we were working on other investigations and tying them all together," Sgt. Rollins said.

In the November raid, authorities seized more than $200,000 in cash, two kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $150,000, two trailers and seven vehicles, Sgt. Rollins said. Investigators are still looking for 10 other people.

Authorities are "following up" on information and Atlanta connections, Sgt. Rollins said.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office, Drug Enforcement Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were involved in the arrests.

As It Is

Great Job R.C. Sheriff's Office and supporting agencies. Drug dealers are the lowest form or scum by taking money from rich and poor, black and white by getting the youth of America hooked on dangerous mind numbing drugs which lead them down the road of complete destruction. By arresting not only the dealers but the users as well, it sends helps to send a clear message and also affords many users an opportunity to seek the help which they so desperatley need. These thug dealers which live the life of crime in many other areas besides drugs are a menace to society and anyone who wants their neighborhoods to be better as well as their community will do everything in their power to help the police arrest and prosecute drug dealers. Now, we need our judges and the court systems to fully understand that dealers prey on our youth and need to be off of our streets. I am not one who is for the first offender act as in my opinion you knew what you were doing wrong before you did it. However, so be it, many will get a break on the first offense and hopefully learn a lesson. However, these repeat offending dealers need to be locked up and stay their until they are to old to be dealers.

Thats the reason our jails are over filled, the users need help, therapy to kick their habit. Yes most of you will say jail them. But this will never stop the drug abuse, jail time will not stop it. In fact that one one thing the Obama administration will tackle. Thru education & therapy & understanding is the only way to lower the numbers. Obama knows this & this is just one example of proof that Obama undersrtands that our current method of fining them money & jail DOES NOT work. I for one are very happy to have someone that finally knows that our Country needs CHANGE in just about every area of our goverment. SENATORS..Wasting our money & with no one to stop THEM is over NO MORE EARMARKS. No more scratching each others back & all that good ole boy craph. Welcome to the new world!

politicallyNcorrect1

Obama even announced yesterday that goverment spending would be posted on the internet so we may know where are hard earned dollar is going. This would never have flown with our white leaders, they have had it there way so long that it was considered normal. Giving to everyone that they needed to in order to benefit their career. I believe everyone will see sooner or later that we needed someone with new ideas.

You're right we need change, especially to our school system, it is amazing to me that some people can get a job and own a computer, and still not know how to write.

PC...You must be full of the crap you so speak of. These thugs have already had their chance for education and chose the easy way out (or so they thought)and sold drugs. They need to be punished to the full extent of the law. Just because you fell in love with Obama, do not belive that he can change these thug's ways anymore than anyone else could. The jails are full because we have more criminals now than we have ever had due to people not taking responsibilty to live their life in a law abiding manner. PC get help.

mommy22girls

Good job! These guys are selling drugs or have young children working for them, children who may not know better. Now with them off the street maybe these kids can have a chance to make something of their selves!

lifelongresidient

dear p. c. the individuals pictured here are not addicts they are the DEALERS, so i gues they should be getting education and treatment (for not willing to follow the law and get a legal job). why don't you bond out all of the individuals and YOU pay for their treatment, thearapy, and education. as a black man who is trying to succeed by getting education and working everyday my philosophy is BUILD BIGGER PRISONS!!!!

sanders23

We don't need bigger prisons. We should just put a wall around the whole state of IL. Throw them all in there, kind of like the British did with Australia.

getalife

These people are drug dealers and should be put in jail. They are destroying our children.

i have a question politicollyn...
how is it that obama is going to show where "government spending" is going when he could not even provide an accounting of where he was getting his funds during the election?
not that i dont want to see where the spending is going - if he can have them post it GREAT the people need to know! but - i will believe it when i see it....

cn683

oh and GREAT JOB on the busts!!!

b1

A huge RAVE for the sheriff's office. They should be put under the jail!

I_Wear_Lipstick_2

politically incorrect - you must not have paid much attention to the election race. McCain and Palin both campaigned that they would post government spending on the Internet so Americans could see where our money was being used. Not a new concept and definitely something "the white leaders" thought of first. Pretty sure Palin already does it in Alaska...but that has nothing to do with the fact these drug-dealing, scumbag, criminals are off the street.

devilishlymad67

Did you notice that they all have one thing in common? They are all males. Doesn't that seem strange?

mable8

Nabbing the user does not resolve the problem; when the authorities collar the DEALERS, then you start putting a dent in the mechanism of illicit drug distribution. Hughes is one of those that need to be imprisoned for life; unfortunately, the courts give the user a life sentence and a slap on the wrist of the dealer--that is an injustice!

Ode to Augusta

To heck with building more prisons or setting up ridiculous therapy sessions for career criminals. It is time for a 2 strikes and you are out law. If you have been convicted of 2 or more felonies you get the death penalty and are killed within a year. Clean up America one thug at a time.

double_standard

This was a solid arrest but this won't end the war on drugs. I guarantee none of these people own a boat or a plane. We need the foreigners who smuggle this trash in everyday while the government turns the other way.

FallingLeaves

The woman are not dealing, they are simply running the show. Until they start arresting more of the women that are harboring these criminals, they are going to pull in more men to set up shop in their homes as soon as the arrested ones are in jail. The revolving door next door had three men arrested in her driveway 2 months after she moved in, and yet, she was not held accountable for anything in the 7 years she lived there. I witnessed her hiding one wanted guy under her house in the unusually high crawl space, she smoked pot on her carport, hiding a hot car in her backyard and she harbored other men there for varying amounts of time. She ran an unlicensed daycare out of her home, which disrupted the neighborhood's peace and quiet. Anytime a complaint was made she claimed racism and bigotry (loudly) and as far as we know, never was charged with anything.

jack

Great job ! More thugs off the streets (at least for awhile). Don't build bigger prisons, use tents surrounded by razor wire and armed guards. A lot cheaper. Also, make'em WORK to earn theri keep-keep the trash off our roads and streets and they can cut grass with sling blades..

FallingLeaves

I hope they go UP the chain of command, instead of down. The apple that fell from the tree in February 2008, didn't fall far from it. I know it's just a dent in the war, but I'm so glad law enforcement is making an impact. Thanks for all your hard-work. Not only was that apple rotten, the tree it came from has quite a bit of decay, too. I hope you've got someone on the way to fix the problem before the tree's wounds fester and it comes crashing down on more innocent people. The branches have already done some damage. I actually hope I'm wrong about this, but I'm afraid I'm not. For everyone's sake.

lovemeforme

to mable8 how can you say he need to be put under the jail what if that were your child would you say the same i really dont think so not saying its right yes he should be punished but we all learn from our mistakes........ he got kids an im pretty sho he want to see them grow up

swagga

People never get a second chance because of people like yall, who don't believe people make mistakes. Ok, they sold drugs, i'm sure its somethings you people have done worse than that and didnt get caught. We are not going to solve this problem by continously beating down these people, how do you think they got there in the first place, by not having parents who cared to teach them right from wrong, they probably didn't have the guidance that some of you probably had. I have seen first hand someone learn a lesson from the first offense act, and they are a regular citizen now, works hard just like everyoe else, so dont count these kids out because they made one mistake cause they didnt have anyone home to tell them right from wrong. Sometimes experience is the best teacher. The problem I do have is with the ones who are 28 to 45 still trying to sale drugs. GET A JOB!! You should know better, and as far as the kids saling for them, its not their fault, WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? Probably with the parents of the kids that skip school everyday so they grow up not being able to read that leads them into the same circle over and over again, generation after generation. ITS TIME TO WAKE UP

Baroness have you ever seen the movie death wish?

KingJames

Baroness, you sure know a lot about what goes on in, out, and under your neighbor's house. Please be careful. She just might target you for being nosey. I'm not trying to be funny or anything like that. But if she will break the law on her property, then she obviously doesn't mind breaking the law on anyone else's including your's! Please be careful of what you say you see. Continue to report suspicious behaviour to the police, but don't advertize in the neighborhood that you are the person making the calls. Criminals believe in retaliation.

apex24

Hypo & RCR, I guess with all being black except for one, they must have been setup. As I've always said "who's on the news most of the time at 6:00pm". But we not supposed to say that, are we.

disssman

HARK, I think the wanted ones went down the street a few minutes ago and they shouldn't be hard to find, just follow the sound. baboom, baboom, baboom, baboom, baboom, baboom, baboom, and the rust bucket should be easy to see all jacked up like a scared cat. Better hurry though, because they are in Richmond county now, and therefore they are drug dealers, but if they get to columbia county, they may be only guilty of dispensing prescription medicines without a permit. Wouldn't want that county to get a bad name would we?

Searching 4 the facts

(CNN) -- The officer involved in a New Year's Day shooting that left a passenger dead in a crowded Oakland, California, subway station resigned Wednesday, a Bay Area Rapid Transit spokesman said.

Oscar Grant, 22, was killed January 1 in a shooting at a subway station in California's Bay Area.

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said in a statement that the officer's attorney and his union representative submitted the resignation at a meeting Wednesday morning with BART police investigators. The officer was going to be at the meeting but did not show up, Johnson said.

The resignation was effective immediately.

Shortly before the funeral for the passenger, 22-year-old Oscar Grant, Johnson said the officer had received death threats.

The BART officer fatally shot Grant in the back after he and some friends were pulled from a train car following a report of an altercation, according to a BART statement.

SargentMidTown

Why is it that most of the drug dealers in Augusta are black? Many times their girl friends are in section 8 housing. Maybe if they did not get so much welfare they would have time for a real job instead of drug dealing.

As It Is

SargeantMidTown, if you really think the majority of drug dealers are black, you are ill informed. The majority of drug dealers are males, that is pretty indisputable. However when it comes to race, it is pretty equal. The biggest difference is the blatent and flagrent violations of many other laws vs. being extremely discreet and trying to fly below the radar. In fact most drug dealers (although others wouldn't call them dealers) are those that buy extra and then make "just a little money" off of their friends that get their drugs form them as well. These users turned dealers are where so many individuals start using. If a first time user had to go to an onknown dealer or a street cornet, etc. more often than not, they wouldn't. However, becasue their so called friends use and will buy/sell for them as well, they begin using also until addicted. ALL Dealers deserve swift and quick punishment however users know what they are doing and need to get help quickly or have the face the conquences as well. The only color involved in drugs is GREEN as this is way beyond race. Everyone probalby knows a casual user even if you don't think so. Speak up and try to help!!
