Animal control workers survive wild day

  • Follow Metro

Ever had one of those days? You know, the kind involving loose pythons, pit bulls chasing a woman through her house or a puppy being found with PVC pipe stuck around its neck?

Just another day at the office for Columbia County Animal Care and Control.

On Tuesday, workers started with an 8:30 a.m. call from an Evans Home Depot employee who said a ball python was loose in the parking lot.

Agency Director Linda Fulmer said the snake is an indoor pet and was either turned loose or escaped from a nearby home.

Then at 8:48 a.m., workers went to a site off Blackstone Camp Road to help a puppy found with PVC pipe around its neck. Maintenance workers brought some tools, and the pipe was cut away, leaving the dog mostly unharmed.

Then came a report at noon of six pit bulls chasing a woman in her Martinez home on Horseshoe Road. Turns out the pit bulls were just puppies looking for some fun, but they knocked a 2-year-old down in the process and drew a squadron of deputies, Ms. Fulmer said.

"I was like, 'Good gravy, I'm not making this stuff up,' " she said of the day.

By Tuesday night, Ms. Fulmer's department was getting recognition by the county commission, being named the county's Team of the Year -- an honor that comes with a windbreaker, umbrella and, most importantly, a day off.

"We all need it after today," Ms. Fulmer joked.

In my 14+ years in Columbia County, I've seen nothing but professionalism and compassion from this team. I am glad they are getting some positive recognition.

Linda Fulmer is the biggest JOKE there ever was!!!

I wonder if Rose has lost Rambo?

Fulmer is not only a big joke, but a control freak as well!! She doesn't allow her "team" to sign anything, including the citations issued by animal control officers, like other animal control agencies do. Guess she thinks she's god of something!

Enough already! Six pitbulls chase woman in home, a squadron of deputies arrived on scene. Again the pit bulldog and the media frenzy. Nothing would have been said if it was a pack of labs or german sheppards. The most misunderstood dog is the pitbull because nobody wants to understand what a wonderful and intelligent breed they truly are if put in the right hands.

I agree dixiechick007. There has been a good deal of documentation that shows this particular breed as an extraordinarily intelligent animal. Not only are they intelligent, but they make great family pets. ANY dog can be taught how to be mean and incorrigible regardless of its breed. Another thing about these pitbulls, if any has watched the series Dog Town, they will see how those taken from Vicks' fighting pack have been rehabilitated and are now being adopted into families. Just goes to show that it is the human element that causes most, if not all, the problems.

I bet they took the puppies and euthanized them because they don't adopt out pitbulls. Linda Fulmer will probably kill the puppy with the PVC pipe too. Not to mention the snake.

dixiechick007

I agree! I understand that Fulmer will euthanize all pitbull or pitbull mixes on the spot, puppies or not she is inhumane. I am an owner of a pitbull that is well mannered and is not human or animal aggressive. They are wonderful with children of any age. I will not support any group that in anyway wants to ban or kill off any breed of dog just because of the media BS.

Thanks mable, I am glad someone agrees that these are wonderful, loyal and loving animals. :)

Yorkiemom, If you read the post above you will understand that all dogs can bite. A pomeranian killed a 3 month old baby two years ago. What is your point? You are another one that feeds off of the media hype. I have been bit twice by a golden retriever but never by a pitbull. It is all in how responsible your are in training and socializing your dog. If you don't socialize a poodle with people and other animals then it too can show aggressive behavior. The dogs that killed this child were probably owned by some scum that does not understand responsibility. You put any animal in the wrong hands then things could get ugly.
