Like it or not, the truth hurts.
So Mr. Butch Palmer, the Harrisburg community organizer, has got it all figured out, does he? "Until we compassionately and strategically displace more of (them) with educated, upwardly mobile people, there is going to be a downtown public relations and crime problem" ("Time for moving beyond Section 8," Letters to the Editor, Jan. 3).
First, who is "them," Mr. Palmer?
He then goes on to demand of Columbia County's leaders to make available "block grants and affordable space" for the generational welfare residents of Richmond County. He wants to do this so as to take advantage of the coming "explosion of foreclosure opportunities" here in Columbia County for the underclass of Augusta?
Right. We'll just replace those here in Columbia County who irresponsibly bought houses they could not afford with the welfare residents from Augusta who can't afford the house either and do it on my dime?
I've got news for you, Mr. Palmer. We don't want Richmond County's problems over here in Columbia County. Columbia County is not Augusta, it is not Richmond County. This county is sovereign, in case you didn't know, and just because we sit adjacent to Richmond County does not mean that you can demand anything of us here in Columbia County. Especially to help you with the "private gentrification" of downtown Augusta.
Anytime I see phrases like, economic inequality, economic justice, social injustice and so forth it I start reaching for my wallet, my Glock and perhaps, if I see fit, my Bible. Richmond County's problems can be summed up in one word: liberalism. Decades of failed economic, social and educational policies that have hurt, not helped the generational welfare residents, as you call them. No, thanks.
Capt. David B. Caudle
Grovetown
Like it or not, the truth hurts.
Well said Capt. David Caudle....Hard to argue with logic as well as pure unvarnished truth...
Yessiree Richmond County needs to fix the problems they created instead of trying to pawn them off on anyone else. It's bad enough that I have to pay for some of these generational welfare people when they come to Columbia County and commit a crime. How much does it cost a day to house someone in the county jail? Wouldn't it be nice if the county of residence was responsible for criminal costs instead of the county that the crime was committed in. Columbia County's prisoner costs would be cut in half.
Richmond County's long term investment in the entitlement mentality will have to be addressed some day. During these hard economic times would be the perfect time to reexamine the redistribution of wealth here and see how much goes to aid and how much goes to enabling. It would also be a good time to end the enabling.
The dimenishing tax base will in time have huge effects on Richmond county and many of the leaders know it. Which is why they would love to be able to replace non-taxpayers with taxpayers. The best way to do that is to move out the entitlement groups and hope that someone else will take them.
OK, David Caudle, we get it: you're a tough guy. Barack was right, except it's not only the poor who cling to their guns and Bibles....
David Caudle ... another person who probably moved to Columbia ounty and now thinks he is a "blue blood".
Way to address the issues with facts, and not just insults, EEL. If there is fault in the argument that is put forth in the LTOE, why not address those issues with proven facts that can discredit what was said. All your statement did was solidify CAPT Caudle's argument as truth that you cannot disprove, and that is why you simply used cheap sarcasm to attack the person and not the statement. Very weak argumentative skills.
I would also submit to the Captain that they don't need any money from RC citizens that shop in CC. I wouldn't spend another dime in CC. I hate to tell the wise ole Captain but if his neighbor puts his house up for section 8 there isn't a whole lot he can do about it. Just like your inlaws you can't pick them. I agree RC isn't the place it once was but I have no delusions that I am better than most of the citizens that live there. If not for the way the school system was run into the ground I would still be there. All you have to do is look at the mayor pro tem vote yesterday to see the real underlying problem in RC. Everything is black vs. white. Everyone is more worried about black Augusta or white Augusta instead of just Augusta. Until politicians stop playing games and do whats right for ALL of Augusta, it will never be the place it used to be or can still be.
whoami, what's new?
Captain Caudle, you forgot about the phrase "redistribute the wealth." We all better be holding on to our wallets. It's true...the more you make, the more they take!
I like the idea of these section 8 types living in Columbia county. The residents there are there on the basis of economic segregation -- especially since the early 80s, when they fled South Richmond county (so the rest of us can have the druggies and ganstas). Which is why when you goto Columbia county you'll find not upperity mobile yuppies, but Bubba with his $50,000 pick'em up truck and jeans with it's Copenhagen ring. Yep, I think it's about time to integrate that 90% Bubba white Columbia county! Want the perks of Augusta proper, time to payup like RC residents have, too!
"Everyone is more worried about black Augusta or white Augusta instead of just Augusta" --- and it's possible due to economic segregation. CC residents want all the perks of Augusta, but don't want the fiscal responsibilities that go with it. They left South Richmond county to get away from Blacks, and thus, you have a lily white bedroom community of EX-DEMs who never saw a dollar they didn't want to spend on themselves. Sick of it. About time they pay their fair share and carry the burden RC residents have to pay. Get that Glock out all you want, Captain, but city life doesn't come cheap -- those druggies aren't going to be the kids raiding your medicine cabinet, they'll be the ones on the corner. Homeboyz are coming to town!
For the love of God can we please get a gate for Columbia County and keep out folks that dont belong!!!! Can I get an Amen Brother?
I like the gate idea....but a toll booth would be even better. Could generate some additional funding for the county.
whoami....it's not the message, it's the messenger! I have no problem with the message, but Capt. Testosterone, like most conservatives, can't deliver it without reaching for guns and Bibles, which have NOTHING to do with the issue. He's mostly posturing to show how tough he is....
"I like the gate idea" --- Yep, that's a v-e-r-y bright idea. Turn CC into East Germany. Complete with guard towers...to keep the residents inside (rest assured Captain America will be ready with his Glock, too!). We'll be watching those long faces of all those who can't shop in RC; eat in the restaurants; or w-o-r-k, on the RC side. Warsaw ghetto here we come!!
Sandy, turning CC into East Germany? You're kidding...right? Your post is an example that extreme statements don't just come from the right. Somebody notify fat Rosie O' Donnell.
Sandy apparently you haven't been to many neighbor hoods in CC, if you had would see alot of professional law adiding black families living there. Richmond county is in the mess it is in because of poor administration, to much welfare mentality and to little being done to stop drugs and gangs. That is not a burden that CC should have to bear. The black families who moved to CC from RC did so to try to give their children a better chance at life. RC needs to solve their own problems, not put them off on any town around the area. But if you want to move over to CC you can come and pay our high taxes anytime you like.....
"Sandy, turning CC into East Germany?" ---- Yep. I mean we have Captain America telling Augusta he'll be getting his Glock out; and now talk about a gate (was that the Brandenberg gate???). Natural logic states a gate needs a wall. Closest thing to resemble that is the Berlin wall. And you know the Berlin Wall had barb wire, landmines and guard towers (Captain America has to have a perch). Yeppers, East Germany, USA!!
5:00smwhr,,,,,,,that is the problem. Middle class blacks running from their community. Instead of chasing white folks around they should have stayed in RC to make it a better place to live and for black pride.
Some parts of RC need to be totally bull bozed. I mean entire subdivisions. Everything. A wall is a good idea.
"Sandy apparently you haven't been to many neighbor hoods in CC, if you had would see alot of professional law adiding black families living there." --- 2000 Census stats for CC: White:78.8% | Black:14.3%. You were saying again???
Take that 14.3% and send them back to richmond. They need to re-establish their community and not run from it.
When working black famlies leave a generation is lost. There are no longer any black fathers or role models. There is no sense of betterment. No property ownership or care. What is left is a fragmented community.
I have a mind-picture of the good "Capt." It is a likeness of another "captain" who was in the news in the 1970s. It is the image of one Captain William L. Calley, USA, of My Lai massacre fame. Calley was a sawed-off runt who was disrespected by subordinates and peers alike. He was an angry, loud, excitable, and incompetent officer. The killing that he supervised at My Lai and his subsequent court martial likely saved him from being eventually assassinated by "friendly fire." Caudle exudes those same characteristics. A pompous little know-it-all jerk who is trying to prove that he is a real man. And, just what is Caudle a "capt." of, anyway? U.S. Army, Salvation Army, or 15 year old kids soccer team? I suspect the latter, coming from one whose self esteem is so low that he signs his letters with the title "capt," and talks of reaching for a Glock and a bible. Oh no, another Christian is on the loose with firearms!
BlackMamba, wouldn't that be called desegregation?
The gist of the letter is correct- Richmond county has problems that they chose to ignore- some of the poorest schools in the state, a laughing stock of a county commission, rampant drugs in the streets, criminals that gain more respect than law enforcement. People who have migrated from RC to CC did so because they saw no hope in their neighborhoods and I do hope the people of CC will not stand by while chaos runs wild in their streets. Most businesses employ CC and Aiken county residents. As far as working in RC- notice how more and more businesses especially the medical offices are opening up satelites in CC. Losing the CC shopper will destroy the economics of RC. RC needs CC more so than the other way around. IF RC wants to improve itself, they are going have to take back their streets and their government- stop all these gentlemen agreements. Diminish the number of illigitimate children being born, high school drop outs and number of unemployed men who have children and do nothing to support them. learn the definition of ACCOUNTABILITY. And yes- I am a born in CC, lived in CC all my life person.
Methinks that "The Knave" should crawl back under his rock and be silent. Without question, the "Twilight Zone" award for completely incoherent thinking should be presented to "The Knave" who is nothing more than a clueless "void surrounded by a sphincter muscle". Captain Caudle, yours was a great letter, and the other citizens of C.C. should line up behind you and make it clear that it is completely unacceptable to have section 8 trouble imposed on the good citizens of C.C.
Sandy "-- 2000 Census stats for CC: White:78.8% | Black:14.3%. You were saying again???" Well, nationally, that's just about exactly how the demographics break out. Is there a quota that CC needs to hit? I mean, doesn't bother me, I live in RC and pay those oh-so-great taxes for the oh-so-great services, but I'm not an idiot. My children attend private schools, and I only make use of county svcs to the extent that the county requires that I do so. Not sure, though, why so many in this forum seem to have such a problem with people exercising their own CHOICE about where to live??? Aren't you liberals the party of CHOICE? If more black folks wanted to live in CC, then I suspect that they would... "economic segregation"? I'm a white guy. I can't afford to live in West Lake...or Montclair, for that matter. Is that "economic segregation," or is it just "I bought as much house as I could afford"? Can I get some of that section 8 money that folks are so eager to throw around? Oh, wait, sorry, I forgot, my role is payOR, not payEE...more "economic segregation"? I make more money, so I have a big, fat target on my big, fat butt? "Tax Collector: Kick Me!"??
"People who have migrated from RC to CC did so because they saw no hope in their neighborhoods" ---- No, they were selfish and only thinking about themselves. They chased homes away from "the problem" (Black people). But, oh, they wanted everything Augusta could offer -- and not pay the upkeep. So we have a county full of so-called conservatives, who know more about ripping another county off, then get all preachy about "welfare". CC residents have some soul searching to do, because they can't run forever.
