Stats for basketball are due Wednesday

Individual basketball player statistics are due Wednesdays at 4 p.m., no exceptions.

The Augusta Chronicle will publish a listing of area leaders in the following basketball categories: scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots. Area leaders will be listed in averages per game in all applicable categories.

Nominations for area player of the week for both boys and girls will be due at this time. Please include any applicable statistics to support the nomination. The weekly stats and area players of the week will run each Friday.

- The Greenbrier cross country team and the Augusta Striders Running Club will be staging the 30th annual Pinch Gut Puffer race at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The 7.5k race will begin at Standard Textile and end at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Augusta. Registration is $20.

Colleges

Legg honored after setting league mark

USC Aiken guard Meredith Legg was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Legg, a senior from Hunters-ville, N.C., became the conference's all-time leader in 3-pointers during the Pacers' 80-60 win over Shaw Friday. She scored a career-high 34 points, making 10 3-pointers to set the record at 264. She now has 269.

Legg scored 10 points in each of USC Aiken's two other games last week, a loss to College of Charleston and a win over North Georgia.

Legg has won the weekly honor twice in her career.

Vick revises plan on hopeful NFL return

Michael Vick would have to keep a court official informed about his attempts to be reinstated by the NFL after his release from prison, under a revised bankruptcy plan proposed by his lawyers.

The amended Chapter 11 reorganization plan was filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Newport News, Va. A committee representing Vick's creditors endorsed the plan and urged the creditors to vote for its confirmation.

Roddick opens with win at Qatar Open

In Doha, Qatar, fourth-seeded Andy Roddick moved into the second round of the Qatar Open with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ivan Navarro .

Fifth-seeded Gael Monfils also advanced with 6-2, 6-2 win over Jan Hernych . Top-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer play today at the $1.2 million tournament.

- In Perth, Australia, Dominik Hrbaty upset James Blake 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1) to lead Slovakia to victory over the defending champion United States at the Hopman Cup.

- In Brisbane, Australia, top-seeded Ana Ivanovic started her 2009 season with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Petra Kvitova at the Brisbane International. On the men's side, Finland's Jarkko Nieminen advanced with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Marcos Baghdatis .

NHL

Rangers' Lundqvist shuts out Penguins

In New York, Henrik Lundqvist became the fifth NHL goalie to start a career with four 20-win seasons, and the New York Rangers turned their struggling power play into a plus in a 4-0 victory over the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins.

Lundqvist made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season and 18th overall.

Winter Sports

Schmid wins debut World Cup ski race

In Oberndorf, Austria, Michael Schmid and Marion Josserand won the season-opening World Cup ski cross races. Tommy Eliasen took third after defeating Casey Puckett of the United States.
