AUGUSTA, Ga. - Joyce Hartey Scavullo, wife of Charles John Scavullo, entered into rest Sunday, January 4, 2009 on her 79th birthday. Mrs. Scavullo was a loving mother and grandmother and had been a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church since 1972. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Hartey. Survivors include, in addition to her husband, 2 sons Charles (Mary Helen), Augusta and Frank, Charleston, SC, 5 daughters; Brenda (Ed) Durant, Augusta, Joyce Kelley, Oakland, CA, Alice (Mark) Atchison, Savannah, Kay (Phil) Jesse, Augusta, Marie (John) Seitz, Augusta, her sister Nancy Gillies, Cutchogue, NY and 10 grandchildren; Alex, Katie and Blase Durant, Dylan and Ian Jesse, Francesca Kelley, Jackie Atchison, Jackson, Nicky and Carly Seitz. Prior to moving to Augusta, Joyce and Charles lived in Great Neck, New York. Joyce, or "Joycie" as she was affectionately known, was born in Queens Village, NY, the daughter of George D. and Ann K. Hartey. Joyce graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom Academy, attended St. Joseph's Academy for Women, Fordham University, N.Y.U. and Augusta College. She was Corresponding Secretary, Vice-President and President of the Mother's Club of St. Aloysius Mother's Club, Great Neck, N.Y. She and her husband Charles were very active in Marriage Encounter in New York and the Charismatic Movement in Georgia. They both attended weekend seminars at Steubenville University, Ohio. She became Director of Education at the Augusta-Richmond County Museum on Telfair St. in 1986 and remained there until 1992. She belonged to The Book Club in Augusta for years. She also served as a docent at Augusta's Morris Museum of Art. She was active in other church and school activities on Long Island as well as in Augusta. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary On-The-Hill Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to St. Mary on-the-Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.
