Men enter not guilty pleas at arraignment

Four of five men charged in the September home invasion and shooting death of a Grovetown man pleaded not guilty in a Columbia County court Monday.

Willie Bernard Butler, 19; Karmbi Octavius Young, 19; and Patrick Antwon Booker, 20, all of Augusta, and Martin Napoleon Holmes, 17, of Hephzibah, are charged with murder, armed robbery, burglary, aggravated assault, kidnapping and other charges. Garland Ray Pittman, 14, of Augusta, faces the same charges, but his arraignment Monday was postponed.

The five were arrested in connection with the slaying of Rickey Gibson, 33, who was fatally shot during a Sept. 24 home invasion.

The four men are being held in the Columbia County Detention Center without bond. Mr. Pittman is being held in the Regional Youth Detention Center.

Woman attacked as she packs belongings

Police are looking for two men who bound a woman's hands and feet then possibly burglarized her home Monday.

The 44-year-old victim said she was packing in an apartment on Rollins Road when someone came through an open door and punched her in the face, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's report. One of the attackers burned her face, the report said. The woman was not sure whether anything was missing.

Fire department gets grant to buy materials

The Bath Volunteer Fire Department has received a grant through a program sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security.

The grant, worth $85,405, will be used to purchase new operations and safety materials, according to a statement from U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett.

The 2008 Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program gives one-year grants to fire departments.

Last week, the Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department received a grant worth more than $237,000 from the program for purchase of a new pumper apparatus -- its first new pumper in 25 years.

Police seek teen in connection with death

Police were searching Monday for Mychael Faulks, 19, in connection with Richmond County's first slaying of the new year.

On Sunday night, Jamar Wright, 22, of the 100 block of East Telfair Street, was shot at least once, Chief Deputy Corner Mark Bowen said in an e-mail. Mr. Wright was pronounced dead at Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics at 10:42 p.m.

Vandalism reported at school during break

Someone kicked in three doors at East Augusta Middle School during Christmas break, and portable classrooms were vandalized at Hains Elementary School, according to Benton Starks, the Richmond County school system's senior director of facilities services.

But this holiday was relatively quiet, Mr. Starks said.

"Maybe people are starting to see it's their community they're tearing up," he said.

Slain man's brother is cited for his conduct

The brother of an Augusta man who was shot to death by Richmond County sheriff's deputies last month was cited for disorderly conduct Sunday.

Austin B. Elmore Jr., whose brother Justin was shot while attempting to run from deputies in the Cherry Tree Crossing public housing complex, is accused of trying to "instigate a confrontation with two deputies," according to sheriff's Lt. Scott Gay. The incident occurred outside the CJ Market, which is across the street from the housing complex, Lt. Gay said. Police said Mr. Elmore stood in front of a deputy's patrol car and refused to move. Other members of Mr. Elmore's family then joined him and began yelling at the deputies, he said.

Austin Elmore was scheduled to be appear in Richmond County Superior Court last week, but his sentencing was postponed for three months because of the family's loss. He is charged with possession of cocaine, obstruction of an officer and two traffic offenses.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues to look into Mr. Elmore's death. Deputies Jose Rivera Ortiz and Michael Hodge remain on administrative duty.

And the beat goes on...something needs to be done with that court case NoW! And the other family members got off scott free? WHY?!

icanusethat

I guess the police will never leave this family alone..i guess they want them all dead the way the police keep harassing them causeing problems..i can't just see this boy walking up to a police car and just stand in front of it...it's more to the story my god you already kill the boy brother why are you harassing the rest of the family...police are looking for problems and if i was him ill report them for harassing me....so what he has a record i surely would'nt stand for nobody harassing me for nothing.

icanusethat

namasta why you think they got off scott free...because the police was just picking and harassing them..you gonna stop believen everything the paper and police say it's two-sides to every story and i do believe the police is trying to kill this boy next...them boys better start recording soon as the police roll up to show they are there to harass them.

wildman

The idiot had cocaine and would not obey a lawful order, give me a break. I've have my doubts about some police officers but I think he got what he deserved in this case. Keep in mind there is usually three sides to the story with the truth somewhere in the middle.

As It Is

icanusethat, you need to get a life and support someone worth supporting. You either must be the most ignorant person in Augusta or just like standing up for drug dealing defiant thugs. You can't belive he would just go up to the police and harass them and refuse to move?? Really?? But you can immediately belive the police would arrest him without cause? I can assure you neither of those officers wanted anything to do with Austin Elmore and certainly did not want to arrest him simply because of the situation that is currently ongoing, they have much more important things to do. I do agree however that he shouldn't have been arrested because he should already be in jail on his origional charges. Hopefully, this blatent defiance of authority will revoke the unappreciated extended sympathy from the judge and place his butt right where it belongs before he creates even more problems within the community. Why anyone would stand up for a family such as this or criminal thugs with the exception of needing their drugs or being a thug theirself is beyond reason. Police don't look to harass anyone as you yourself said they are lazy - leave them alone and they will leave you alone.

NEone

icanusethat: You must be a family member of the Elmore clan to say what you do. And the outrageous part is that you believe what you say!

patriciathomas

It looks like Austin Elmore is using his grace period wisely...from the entitlement point of view.

pantherluvcik

I would hope that Mr. Elmore wouldn't start a confrontation with police and have cocaine on him, that's a no brainer. I'm sure there is more to the story, that would be stupid. And please believe that a drug dealer has more sense than to confront a police officer with drugs on him.

ispeakadatruth

but the elmore's are a peaceful people.

let's riot!

KMAAC

I think the deputies should have tried to run him over to show him what the role-reversal feels like.

ListenAndLearn

I'm still trying to figure out how the murdering thugs that killed the man in Grovetown have pleaded NOT guilty. I agree with the truth being somewhere in the middle of it all. But, God knows who did what, when and why. If we just step back a little bit and watch....HE will take care of it. And I mean all of it!

Debster

I don't understand the postponement in "brother" Elmore's court case. I mean, just because someone loses a family member doesn't mean they should be granted special privilege. But, patriciathomas, you speak the truth when you write he's "using his grace period wisely." I'm sure his name will appear time and again in the police dockets between now and his rescheduled court appearance. How many times do you think he will get to walk away and not have to answer for his actions?

Martinez

First of all - this article did not say he had cocaine on him during the incident Sunday, the only reference made to drugs was his pending charges that the judge delayed sentencing for to give him time to grieve. With that being said, how many people have missed family funerals, weddings and births while doing short stints in jail on far lesser charges? I think the delay serves nothing more then P.R. for the Judge. On the flip side, what will the Judge tell the community if his generosity results in someone being hurt? If you ask me, the police and now the judicial branch are extended way to much patience and restraint in this situation. Who is running this town, the law or the lawless?

GACopperhead

PT, I hope that, someday, you end up needing "entitlements". You have to be singularly the one person most like Ebeneezer Scrooge that I have ever encountered in my life. I can truly envision you saying "Then let them die, and further decrease the surplus population!". As for Elmore, if his brother showed extreme stupidity, why wouldn't Austin. He thinks he's safe, because of his race and the backing he gets from family and fellow CTC residents. It wouldn't be the first time a dealer was just plain dumb..... And no, I'm not racist, I see an incident where ignorant people are doin ignorant things.

howdie

Austin Elmore is looking for justification so he can bring an officer down. He and his friends are just looking for a reason to shoot a police officer to get even.

stillamazed

Why wasn't all the family members who joined in arrested? They need to set an example to all not just one. And to icanusethat, I think you have it all twisted....this family is angry and they are going to do all they can to keep trouble going. Both these brothers have no regard for the law, they are career criminals, so you can't really expect symphathy or understanding from the public. Apparently he isn't worried about going to jail or his court case or he wouldn't be on the street trying to make more trouble.

patriciathomas

GaC, you are the most enamored with the "slavery of entitlements" of anyone I've ever read. People should have their money taken from them for redistribution because other people don't have enough? Should preparation for life enter into the equation? Should charity enter into the equation? Your "Robin Hood" ideology is a point we'll have to disagree on. You see kindness and I see enabling. Travel down Laney-Walker and points south sometime and tell me if you like the results of the entitlement mentality.

yak11

Amazing....truly amazing, the victimhood (I emphasize HOOD) mentality permeates this community

pah4r

This Elmore family, (use of term is used very loosely), is only trying to keep their thriving business going and will readily support their thug members so that they can. Those who ignorantly support them and their actions are probably also benefiting from the family's business in some manner.

local girl

I can use that What is wrong with you.do you really beleave it is alright to use drugs and sell drugs,to run from the law and to keep breaking the law. are you on drugs You have some kind of problem. You need help

I_Wear_Lipstick_2

pantherluvcik....your 5:48 a.m. post speaks loud and clear about yourself: "And please believe that a drug dealer has more sense than to confront a police officer with drugs on him." And here I was thinking drug dealers didn't have any sense at all....huh...my bad.

Dukedirtbag

there go the VANDALS striking again, soon we'll have the Visigoths and Mongols on the move

InChristLove

icanusethat, your statement "I guess the police will never leave this family alone..i guess they want them all dead the way the police keep harassing them causeing problems" is unbelievable. I believe the article said Mr. Elmore stood in front of a deputy's patrol car and refused to move. Other members of Mr. Elmore's family then joined him and began yelling at the deputies. Sounds to me like the Elmore family is the one that wouldn't leave the officers alone and I have to agree with "howdie". Seems to me like they are looking for justification to take an officer down. I feel for the Elmore family loss but it's about time law enforcement quits pampering this family. Enough is enough.

DefaultChoice

ICANUSETHAT, is a classic example of a low life who either committs or has committed crimes and doesn't accept responsibilities for his actions. Hey ICAN... Mr. Elmore, was NOT a VICTIM nor are his retarded family members acting like savages. What part of the article did you not understand? The part where his brother STOOD in front of the patrol car and REFUSED to move out of the way or the part where his family members joined in? In no way, was the Richmond County Deputy sitting in his patrol car responsibile for this tirade. ICAN.. you can save yourself the humiliation by not responding to any articles, because it is clear that you can not read and if you can read, you do not comprehend simple English. You need to stop blaming the "COPS" in general for your "BRUTHAS" screw-ups.

Double D

It's sad that people here find the behavior of the Elmos normal. The worst part is their children are seeing and hearing their actions so the poison is spreading to them also. Those who say that if it was my child that was killed or being "harrassed" by the police are wrong. My father always told me that if I go to jail he will not bail me out, or spend money on attorneys. If these guys are getting harrassed, it's because of thier actions. We know they are still using, buying and selling drugs. Probably robbing and assaulting people also. Their actions are the reason for their so-called harrassment from the police.

wise ole man

i am sure the poilice purposely found out where Elmore's brother was going to be so they could start some trouble with him in hopes of shooting him! Get real. SOunds to me like this guy was upset because his brother got all the attention. Seems like the apple does not fall far from the tree- drugs, defiant behavior. IT was nice of the court to allow him a 3 month grieving period but it looks like the grieving time was too long for him to stay out of trouble- to jail and throw away the key.

I_Wear_Lipstick_2

Why does Austin Elmore get a three month extension on his sentencing to mourn for the loss of his brother? He was convicted of a cocaine possession, traffic violations, and obstruction of an officer. He needs to be sentenced NOW so his thug butt is sitting in prison instead of inciting trouble in the streets. Otherwise he'll continue to pull stunts like this and will end up deserving to be run over by the cops....citing another riot from "residents of Cherry Tree" and bringing Al Sharpton back to Augusta to preach the justice system did the Elmores wrong when they didn't lock him up in the first place. Unbelievable.

jackfruitpaper833

Like Father like Son(s), I grew up with the dad and let me say the Apple has not fallen far from the tree. I'm just so glad my mom MADE me behave and instilled FEAR LOL in me, I was to scared to even be late coming in for curfew, those lights better not be on and I'm still outside, I couldn't even be on the porch. I thank God I was never a trouble making young man, heck I was to scared of my moma, let alone my grandmother.

jackfruitpaper833

My moms old saying: "Imma beat some sense in ya" oooh the 60s and 70s. A lof of these young people need that in todays society.

I_Wear_Lipstick_2

Give your mom a hug for me jackfruitpaper. She did good.
