Paine rallies for win over Miles on road
In Fairfield, Ala., LaKeisha Bell scored a game-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Paine College to a 66-64 win over Miles College on Thursday.
Bell went 6-for-10 from the field for the Lady Lions, whose only other scorer in double figures was Kenita Harold with 10. Bell also made seven of nine free throws.
Cyntonia Jones and Sade Odutola scored 18 points apiece for Miles. Odutola also had a team-high 16 rebounds.
Miles, which led 33-31 at halftime, won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Paine 41-34.
Tennis
Murray, Davydenko open year with wins
In Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Andy Murray defeated James Blake 6-2, 6-2 to set up a semifinal meeting with Roger Federer at the inaugural Capitala World Tennis Championship.
In the other first-round match, Nikolay Davydenko ousted Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-4 and will face Rafael Nadal in today's other semifinal. Nadal and Federer received first-round byes in the exhibition event, which is not part of the ATP Tour but features six of the world's top 10 players and offers a winner-take-all prize of $250,000.
The top-ranked Nadal and No. 2 Federer will both begin their 2009 ATP season by playing in the Qatar Open in Doha starting Monday. Murray, the defending champion, and Roddick are also playing in the tournament.
Running
Quigley takes title at New York event
In New York, Sean Quigley, of Philadelphia, won the men's title and Aziza Aliyu, of Ethiopia, took the women's in the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run through a frigid Central Park.
Quigley, a former All-American at La Salle, covered the four-mile course in 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Brian Olinger, of Columbus, Ohio, was second in 18:53, followed by Abiyot Endale, of Ethiopia, in 18:59.
Aliyu outkicked Emily Brown, of Minneapolis, by 1 second to finish a in 21:21. Buzunesh Deba, of Ethiopia, was third in 22:05.
Winter Sports
Northug, Follis win Tour de Ski sprints
In Nove Mesto na Morave, Czech Republic, Petter Northug, of Norway, won the men's sprint and Arianna Follis, of Italy, won the women's race in the fifth leg of the World Cup's annual Tour de Ski series.
Northug led a Norwegian double, edging Tor Arne Hetland in the 1.2-kilometer freestyle race. Italy's Cristian Zorzi finished third.
Dario Cologna, of Switzerland, was fifth and leads the tour overall with a cumulative time of 1 hour, 26 minutes, 2.4 seconds.
- In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Wolfgang Loitzl, of Austria, earned his first World Cup victory, winning the second leg of the Four Hills ski jumping tournament.
Overall World Cup leader Simon Ammann, of Switzerland, was second with 274.6 points after jumps of 140 and 134.5 meters. Harri Olli, of Finland, was third.

Zada Belle rolls to victory at Aqueduct
In New York, Zada Belle drew off to 41/4-length win over Intentional Fever in the $67,965 Interborough Handicap for fillies and mares at Aqueduct.
Never worse than second, Zada Belle opened up a comfortable lead in midstretch, cruising home in 1:13.94 for the six furlongs on the fast track. The 5-year-old trained by Tom Albertrani and ridden by Ramon Dominguez earned her sixth win in 9 starts.
Zada Belle paid $3.10, $2.50 and $2.10 as the 1-2 favorite. Intentional Fever returned $5.90 and $2.70. Blowing Kisses earned $3.30 to show.
- In Arcadia, Calif., In Summation won the $100,000 El Conejo Handicap for the second consecutive year, defeating Machismo by a length at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano , In Summation covered 51/2 furlongs in 1:02.58 and paid $4.40 and $2.60. Machismo returned $4.20.
