Katrice Broadwater and Victor McIntosh welcomed their son, Kaleb Elizjah Broadwater, at 12:28 a.m. Thursday at Doctors Hospital.

"Grandma predicted it would be today," Ms. Broadwater said. "And it was."

At 12:28 a.m. Thursday, the Graniteville woman, 21, and her boyfriend -- Victor McIntosh, of Hephzibah -- became the parents of the first Augusta-area baby born in 2009. Kaleb Elizjah Broadwater, weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces, was delivered at Doctors Hospital.

"I kind of knew, once we got here, that grandma was right," Ms. Broadwater said.

Although the couple knew they would have a boy, they had no idea Kaleb would be Augusta's first New Year's baby. "It's exciting," she said. "He looks just like me!"

Ms. Broadwater's grandmother, Charlotte Garrett, said she's been around enough babies in her family to predict delivery dates with some degree of accuracy.

"I'm sensitive about these things," Ms. Garrett said. "Normally I can count the days and I figured this one would be about two weeks early."

Ms. Broadwater, surrounded by family members in her hospital room Thursday, said she normally spends New Year's Eve home with family -- enjoying good food.

The baby has the last name of

The baby has the last name of the mother. This is not a brain twister. The truth is the truth and facts are facts. Father will not have to pay support (if can) unless mother goes to court to get it. He has no responsibility other than planting the seed.

WOW!!! Some of the comments

WOW!!! Some of the comments on here just amaze me. Why are people worried about if they are married or not???? Who cares. If you want to worry about something, worry about what if the Yellowstone Caldera was to go off today. What would you do then.

As for those commenting about

As for those commenting about the baby having his mother's last name, none of use knows for a fact that the baby will not have his father's last name. You are only going on what the Augusta Chronicle is reporting. Until you know all the facts, stop judging and if the baby does not have his father's last name, what makes you think that he will not support his child. All of you need to get a life and leave this story alone with the negative comments because you don't know this couple. They did not ask to be put into the paper but because their baby was the first to be born in Augusta of 2009, this is what they are getting. It's a shame.

i didn't praise palin's

i didn't praise palin's daughter; i knew this was a political stunt from the get-go and another embarrassing episode for the gop. as far as this birth goes, though, i would like some further details about what this lady and her baby's daddy are planning to do to support their li'l bundle of joy. yes, hypocrites08, it is unfair of me to assume that she will receive any entitlements just because she is an unmarried mom; but if she does receive $.01 of gov't money, then i believe i am not out-of-line in questioning finances. at least palin's daughter's child will receive help from the family - can we same the same about Elizjah (sic) Broadwater-McIntosh (a fine Irish last name LOL)?

Have any of you checked out

Have any of you checked out the birth accouncements in the Sunday paper? The new generation does not care - married or not, and then later it may turn out to be "Yours, mine and ours". Great new generation indeed - anything goes!
I hope God does not give up on us!! (He won't of course).

These parents may very well

These parents may very well receive the same support from their family. Besides that who said they needed support yes, they are young but may both have stable well-paying employment. No one has the right to question how or who is supporting this child it's NO ONES business.

Hypocrites_08 - There is a

Hypocrites_08 - There is a difference in Gov Palin's daughter, that I have not seen yet from this story. Bristol and Levi were getting married before the baby, both are still in school, and the baby's last name is Levi's, the father. Please check your facts before you use someone else as an example in your posts.

Rip so they say they were

Rip so they say they were going to get married no one knows if that is true or not. They had an image to uphold. Not to mention these kids could have the same plans no one here knows anything about these people accept the date and birth of their child. They are in their 20s so they could easily be college graduates unlike the HS diploma the Johnston-Palin clan are trying to attain. Point you don't know their situation your making assumptions.

Were getting married before

Were getting married before the birth, key words "were to be married". You do not know what this young lady's plans are. Do you know whether or not she has graduated from College? Do you know whether or not she is employed or not? Do you know anything about the Father? How was Palin's daughter going to support her child? Just because she and the Father " Were " to be married does not mean they will not get government assistance. Bottom line is that Naysayers will always try to distract from the positive of any situation.

Congratulations to the couple

Congratulations to the couple on the birth of their new year's baby. First of all PatriciaThomas, I do not believe this story called for any discussion related to who will be paying for the baby for the rest of its life. You have no knowledge about this couple's financial circumstances. More importantly, it is none of your business. It is apparent that you do not have a life outside of the negative comments that you frequently choose to make about African-Americans. Somehow you always seize an opportunity to make light of stories about African Americans even when the subject matter isn't relevant.

j2says.... Bristol Palin had

j2says.... Bristol Palin had her baby a few days ago and she to is an unwed mother just like the young blacks in this story. I have said all throughout the elections that white folks, particularly hypocritical white Conservatives, have a different opinion of blacks involved in the exact same immoral conduct as whites. This black couple has did nothing wrong here, but the problem is that white folks are bitter racist for even dredging up a foolish presumptive notion that they are on welfare, the father is a drug dealer, or that white folks have another black mouth to feed. Yes... I said it!! White folks are racist as he** in Augusta and go to church every Sunday to eat the communion like a meal only to return to this site and spew their hatred. You guys talk about black people with total hatred and malice, even when you don't know them.

Elizjah is the baby's name.

Elizjah is the baby's name. My question is why do black parents give their children, especially girls, such strange and often unpronouncable first names?

good points, hypo. if palin's daughter receives gov't assistance, she's no better than any other 2nd class citizen who gives birth to a child with no plan / intention of providing any finances to support the newborn.

gee, cparker, i am detecting

gee, cparker, i am detecting some malice and hate in your posts; could it be that you secretly (or not so secretly) harbor ill will towards non-blacks? the fact that a non-wed mother claims victory for the first birf of the new year is the major point of contention for posters here (including me); i could care less what race the babymaker is.

Palin's baby isn't on

Palin's baby isn't on government welfare. Could that be a difference from the many thousands of welfare babies born to the lucky citizens of Augusta? And yes, j2, to some contempt and confusion is the same thing. I see to you it is.

Trigg,Track,Tripp, Apple,

Trigg,Track,Tripp, Apple, Bronx, CoCo and Bristol aren't strange names?!? And these names come from all-white parents. And the babies name is probably pronounced Elijah the mother/parents just added a Z.

When reading remarks of white

When reading remarks of white folks in Augusta, I feel blacks are right to demand Affirmative Action laws stay in place. There is no way an uneducated minority can overcome this kind of hatred, even at the hands of people like patriciathomas whom is a devout Conservative hypocrit that complains that we don't need laws such as AA. Blacks should just trust her and her white cronies to treat negro's right!! The more I write this post, I can not help feeling Jeremiah Wright got a raw deal because he obviously has pegged white fools like patriciathomas right..

Please reread my first post,

Please reread my first post, then come back and then chew me out. Hypocrites_08 - discount everything I said about Bristol Palin, but the cold hard fact is that her baby has the father's last name. I never said anything about welfare or assistance. What I did say is that one or the other parent needs to change their address. How about them at least live in the same STATE. I hope with all my heart that their child grows to succeed in whatever he wants to be.

okay, i'll take the bet, j2:

okay, i'll take the bet, j2: neither the mother nor the baby's daddy are college graduates. anyone want to bet against me? and, no, i don't think Trigg, Track, Tripp, Apple, Bronx, CoCo, or Bristol are good names for kids, but they are a site better than Lashanawonnika, Moquanisha, Shenekemanaenae, ZaNiqua, or Ja'Darius (IMHO).

bone... Yes, you read me

bone... Yes, you read me perfectly!! Whites folks are bitter racist on this site and if your assessment of this black unwed couple you do not even know is that they are on food stamps, he is drug dealer, or any other adverse racial assumption then this fits you too. You know I have long complained that whites deliberately form poor opinions of blacks because whites are mean spirited racist on this site. Today is no different and my opinion of some of you has never changed. patriciathomas is the same fool that said months ago that the nooses left by white students in Jena were so small they couldn't hurt blacks so the white children shouldn't be punished. Yes, I said it!! White folks on this site can not have meaningful dialogue about blacks even when the story is positive because whites are racist on this site.

I wonder what political party

I wonder what political party all these defenders of the unmarried couple and son, were in the last election. Views and opinions can sometimes be connected to a persons political affiliation. The entitlement group sometimes tend to lean toward a certain party/individual. I hope these unmarried people will decide to become a married couple to give their son a unified family. Supporting unmarried women who continue to have children is a drain on ALL people. Time will tell. It doesn't matter whether the couple is purple or green. They are unmarried and the baby has the mother's name. A topic can be about race (white/black/tan) but some continue to want to make it racist.

Trust me, blacks would careless. No black would insult you for naming your children after anyone of your choice, so why insult them?

have you by any chance kept

have you by any chance kept up with the post-Jena 6 teens? my, cparker, they are a fine bunch of children to reference (ROTFLMAO). by mean-spirited, i presume you also include comments made by you and others such as justus4 when concluding that whites want blacks to go directly to jail and fail miserably in life. why would i or any other person want people to continue to live on gov't assistance; do poorly in school; become involved with drugs; and perpetuate the cycle of 2nd class citizenry that plagues this country? i am fully aware that my comments about a single mom are unpopular, but to assume that i believe she is a failure because she is black & unwed is not a conclusion that can be reasonably drawn.

convertedsoutherner....

convertedsoutherner.... Obviously you're confused because the only unwed pregnant teen during the election was the child of white hypocritical Conservative. What's the point? Are fooled to think blacks are the only people to have children out of wedlock? According others that supported Palin, to have child that was loved by both parents was a good thing. Of course unless they are black and live in Augusta, you guys must admit Palin's daughter taught you nothing, except that white folks have a deep seeded hatred for black even when they are doing well for themselves.
