Grand-prize winners in the elementary, middle and high school divisions will be published the week of Mr. Obama's inauguration. After his installation as the 44th president of the United States, the letters will be mailed to the White House.

Dear Mr. President,

My name is Dasani Gates and there are a few things I would like for you to do as president. One thing I would like for you to do is improve the salary of working people. If you would improve the salary of working people, my mom wouldn't have to work two jobs to support me and my family. The next thing I would like for you to do as president is to lower prices for gas, food, and taxes. If you would lower the prices for these things my mom would have more money to buy me more clothes to wear and more toys to play with. I would also like you to improve the health care benefits for everyone in America. If you improve the health care benefits, everyone would have better dental and medical care for their families. The last thing I would like you to do as president is to improve the learning environment for all students in America. If you improve the learning environment, we would have better schools to learn in, new books to learn with and better after-school activities so everyone will be well-rounded students. I believe if you do these things you will be the best president in the United States of America.

Sincerely,

Dasani Gates

Second-grader at Lord House of Praise Christian School; Waynesboro, Ga.

Dear Mr. President,

I want you to keep companies in America so my dad will stop looking to see if it's made in China. It is important to keep jobs because one of my friend's dad does not have a job.

Get better schools for your kids. They need a good education like you. Please get a better facility and supplies for your kids. We only have two computers in our classroom. We could learn more with more computers. Send us some money please.

Sincerely,

Savannah Makowski

Dear President Obama,

Congratulations on being the next president of the United States! I hope you will make the best decisions for our country. One of the most important things I think you should reconsider is this: Every time you make a decision, think about how it will affect everyone and put yourself in their position. I find that helps me to make the right decisions. For example: abortion. What if you were the baby? If you could fast forward in time and defend yourself, would you? Only you can make this decision for yourself. I hope you choose wisely for this country. God bless.

Sincerely,

Will Skelton

Dear President Obama,

America is ready for change. I am very glad you are going to be our next president because there have been too many Republicans in the presidency. I think there should be less conflict between the Republicans and the Democrats. Please lower taxes and take the troops out of Iraq; we are ready for them to come home. I hope that you will lower gas prices and that you will help the economy get back in shape as only you can.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Allen

Dear Mr. President,

Please can you change the economy? My dad has no job, so my mom is the only one working. So can you create jobs for people? So many people in our country don't have a job. Please! I want my dad to have a job for Christmas. Your girls are lucky their dad has a job. Please help my dad find a job.

Sincerely,

Marie Watts

Dear Mr. President,

I think you should double the police force and lower crime rates. Then regular people can have protection and protect their family. People can feel safe and can live for as long as they can. They can live with their family. And you should help them go to college.

Sincerely,

Lorenzo Gough

Some of these "letters" had some adult supervision....you should have left them alone and it would have been more heartfelt....these sound like adults spouting off telling the kids what to write...............................

christian134

karmakills123 that is very true...Leaving the letters as a second or third grader would write them would indeed have a greater impact... Adults tend to muddle the waters by "cleaning up" so they may throw in their two-cents worth...Children often hold a greater simplicity to the important issues of life than the "adult"....

momofthree

Karma especially the first one, a private school student looking for his mother to get better pay? I was a private school student and I was a good student, but not that good in the 2nd grade. It is one thing to help with spelling, but the whole letter? I think you hit the nail on the head.

Rose

I agree with all of you. 2nd and 3rd graders did not write those letters.

happythoughts

This is not what I expected. improve the salary of working people, keep companies in America, there have been too many Republicans in the presidency, double the police force and lower crime rates. These letters appear to have adult input. I don't know if a child can have much input of their own if they have to ask an adult for their opinion. The letter wanting their father to have a job sounds real but sad because I hope the father isn't waiting for a job to be created for him. This child is lucky to have two parents sadly one is not putting enough effort into getting a job, any job. Please Forgive me.

C'mon parents...you had your chance to vent during the election. Please let the children write to the President. I would ask the Chronicle not to submit any of the letters above.

Rose

The two 8th grade letters sound written by 8th graders.

Come on people ! I know a child that wrote one of the letters, and she wrote it all by herself ! These are her words ! You should go to a school and sit in the classroom and you would know !! They are excellent students with excellent teachers !!

Epic failure.

Consider the fact these may have been the topics discussed at the dinner table. My children were raised hearing political discussions and were very aware of current issues. Both of my children, now grown and on their own, registered to vote as soon as they were of age, due to their knowledge of the importance in having a voice.

The letters wrote from the students at Roy E Rollins were wrote in the classroom....WITHOUT the parents. You people need to stop being so jealous of these children being smarter than you.

Everyone who commented about parental influence on the writers is 100% correct. My boys are 9/10yrs old in 4/5th grade and we have conversations on a weekly basis about how gas & food prices affect my ability to take them to more weekend activities; how the declining economy affects their friends' parents who now don't have jobs. They hear kids on the bus saying they heard their parents talking about loosing their homes. These kids know they're not writing letters to Santa, they study history and know what the position of president means in terms of political power to make changes. IDK what you were taught in GA schools but in VA we watched the election coverage regularly in 3-5th grade and held mock debates so don't underestimate what local schools and intelligent parents are teaching their young kids at home. Unless you have school age kids yourselves and know what's being taught in their schools you really can't comment. If you do have kids in CSRA schools and are surprised at these letters then that speaks volumes of your involvement in their education as their parents. These conditions are perfect for teaching your kids about politics and economics. Shame on you if you dont.

dashiel your post truly shows your ignorance, Lord help your kids if you're a parent,, geez

All of you downing these children should be SLAPPED!! My daughter goes to Lewiston and is in the 5th grade...she also had to write a letter to Mr. Obama...and did so WITHOUT MY HELP. I only proof read the letter after it was written. It was a well written as many of these. You who don't believe that these children can write these are ignorant! Children are much smarter then you are giving them credit for. Back off! Give these children some credit and quit hating that they are more informed and smarter then some of YOU!
