Right on Mr. Smith!
The front page comments by your stupid journalist figuratively accusing the police officer who shot the hostage-taker in the shoulder of being gun happy was the dumbest thing I've ever read.
Hey, this is a police officer, a member of the SWAT team. If we get rid of every police officer who shoots anyone, we soon won't have anyone who will even apply to be one.
I pay taxes to be protected by law enforcement. I don't want a group of law enforcement officers who are afraid to use their weapons to protect me and/or defend themselves.
Please editor, take this flower-child journalist aside and give him/her a course in real life.
I am outraged that you would print garbage like that. The only thing saving us is the fact that most low-rent garbage that commits mayhem don't read the Augusta Chronicle .
Clint Smith
Augusta
Right on Mr. Smith!
I agree, Mr. Smith. However, it is not true that it is only the "...low-rent garbage that commits mayhem don't read the Augusta Chronicle ." Quite a few folks in the middle class, and even upper class, do not read the Augusta Chronicle. And, the commision of crimes is not limited to just one "class" of citizens, sir. GGpap.
Augusta, you will protest your way to the police force that you deserve.
Can you say Peace Officer?
Clint Smith very right on point...Police Officers are to do what is necessary to protect the innocent...If they can do it without taking a life then that is great but they do not need to second guess themselves...A second is time enough for a victim to die while police are trying to find a way to take a non-lethal shot...Let them do their job...dashiel I would like to ask you a question...If the child were you own or if it were you being held against your will with a knife to your throat or a gun to your head what would be going through your mind? I dare to assume that it most certainly would not be the health and welfare of your assailant...
interesting juxtaposition of terms and thoughts...flower-child, peace, class...where have you folks been for the last 40 New Year's? Is Augusta, like Rip van Winkle, just now awakening to some brave new world? Welcome to post-modernity! If the alarm clock of $700 BILLION couldn't do it, then surely the Illinois governor/President-elect will.
Wasn't Charles Manson a flower-child?
Listen you presumptuous pea-brained twop, it's about keeping the peace. Being an employee who carries a weapon and assumes combat stance just like in the training video doesn't make a testosteronebrain a peace officer.
If the thugs choose to duke it out with the police don't be surprised at the results. And don't fret over the writings of a wet-behind-the-ears reporter. The news business is attracting too many people who have no grasp on the facts and pursue their personal agendas. It's up to management to show them the door and not provide them a forum for their liberal biases.
My my such a limited vocabulary this fine New Years Day morning dashiel...You didn't answer the question? Now let's enlarge on the above and add that most of the Officers have the mind and training not to be crazed gunmen...Now let us begin again...Please answer the question...
I don't think that we have a problem with our peace officers being afraid to shoot criminals.
If people didn't do stupid, dangerous things and show disrespect for logical laws none of this would have happened. We give guns to officers to take defend and if necessary kill those willing to endanger us, our loved ones or the officers who we pay to protect us. I have sympathy for the criminal's family but not for the criminal.
The entire conversation is silly and unreal. In a life or death/shoot-don't shoot situation a trained LEO won't think twice about using deadly force, and all the LTE's and comments regarding such won't pass through his/her mind for a second. Find something else to argue or voice your jaundiced, petty opinions about...
Which article is he referring too? I can't find it. lol Motorman if the journalist did say that then its not a silly arguement its a defense to the officer that helped save this childs life and rightfully so too!!! That journalist should be called out!!! You are right though, it wont make a difference to someone like that, they wont think twice about defending criminals!!
Excellent Letter. Police deserve and need our support. Sure, the rare police officer that looks to use unnecessary force needs to be dealt with swiftly and promptly, and now days, they usually are very quickly. However, most police officers are Peace Officers that only use force when necessary and rarely draw their weapons and usually only shoot their weapons during training. We don't need the average joe second guessing every decision made by our police officers and they have neither the training or proper perspective to do so. We can't have police second guessing theirselves more than they already do or we will have criminals killing our officers or others vs. the other way around. The benefit of the doubt should always go to the responding officer as the suspect placed his or herslef in the situation whereas the police merely responded to the situation and they are doing whatever is necessary to defuse and end the situation. Police would certainly prefer not to have to fight, use batons and certainly would prefer not to have to shoot suspects. However they are making split second decisions to protect theirselves and each of us. They deserve our support and appreciation.
