5-year-old hostage leaves hospital

  • Follow Metro

A 5-year-old boy held hostage during a Christmas standoff and his mother, who was stabbed with a butcher knife during the incident, have been released from a hospital.

Georgette Reid, the woman charged in the crime and shot by police during a rescue attempt, remained at Medical College of Georgia Hospital on Monday.

Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said the veteran SWAT member who shot Ms. Reid had no choice because she was slicing the boy's throat as officers were bursting through a barricaded door.

"We're just happy as hell knowing the boy is alive because we thought he wouldn't be," Lt. Scott Peebles said.

According to Sheriff Strength, Ms. Reid stabbed Latoya Lewis in the head and arm with a butcher knife Thursday when Ms. Lewis tried to break off their romantic relationship. Ms. Lewis called police and escaped from the Sunny Day Drive home with Ms. Reid's 14-year-old daughter.

Ms. Lewis, a military intelligence officer stationed at Fort Gordon, told deputies that she was unable to get her son out of the house and feared that his life was in danger, the sheriff said. Ms. Reid barricaded herself in a back room and wouldn't let deputies inside.

"That thing soured from the get-go," Sheriff Strength said.

Deputies tried to negotiate with Ms. Reid, but it became clear that she was going to harm the child, he said. As SWAT team officers detonated two diversionary grenades behind the house, others barged in from the front.

Ms. Reid was using the boy as a shield, but Deputy Scott White was able to shoot her once in the upper chest and rescue the child, Sheriff Strength said.

SWAT members train regularly and firing their weapons becomes almost automatic when necessary, Lt. Peebles said, but they prefer to talk someone into giving up.

He said there's a misconception fostered by Hollywood that SWAT teams can't wait to shoot somebody, but that isn't true.

"All the tactics we employ are designed to save lives, and that includes the life of the hostage-taker," Lt. Peebles said. "That's what we train to do."

Lt. Peebles said he couldn't put into words the pressure SWAT was under Thursday and the agony of knowing that a child's life could depend on their actions.

God bless the boy and his continued recovery. I also pray that he will not have long-term emotional scars as the result of this unfortunate incident.

Ramschick, please tell your

Ramschick, please tell your sister to hire a very good attorney, one who is familiar with military issues. There is a very high chance that she will be discharged, and at this point, she should be represented by professional counsel. The Army takes a very dim view of having SWAT teams called to officers' homes, especially when they are in MI and have a very high security clearance. She won't be discharged for the lesbianism- unless she has lied about it previously- but for conduct unbecoming an officer.

I am so glad the child has

I am so glad the child has gone home from the hospital. RAmschick, tell your sister and nephew to hang in there. I may not approve of her lifestyle and with children around, but she has to answer for that. I think as I said earlier RCSD did a great job and i'm sure your sister is very appreciative. Get her life straight and take care of her child, That's what important. Good Day and Happy New Year to all.

RichmondKountyResident, what

RichmondKountyResident, what does your comment have to due with the safety of her and the child? Take your ignorance elsewhere. This is personal of course you wouldn't understand unless it's your own family. I love her because she is my cousin not because of whatever she may prefer male of female you have no place. Thank God they are ok. And the sad thing is there are so many gay people in the military it's freaking ridiculous. No one can't technically prove anything though so all you people that are talking find something else to do all the media does is make something worse than it actually is.

NLewis, not everyone on here

NLewis, not everyone on here is against your cousin. I think it's tragic for an Army officer to have a career ruined because of someone else's action. But please, have her go talk to an attorney, for her own protection.

I do believe they will have

I do believe they will have "technical proof" based on the statements that were given to the police by her and Ms. Reid's daughter. The Army will put her on a lie box so either way they've got her- lying to the police and not gay (although who would make that up under those circumstances?), or telling the truth and admitting it to the police

A child should not be placed

A child should not be placed in a home where he/she learns not to love humans no mater how they look like or choose to live their life. The great part of children is that they don’t judge by what they hear or read, they judge from pure emotions that are transmitted from one person to another. I know the couple personally; they are been together for a every long time. I have no clue what happen. Everyone has problems but yes this was by far not good but it could have been worst. Ms Reid and I have been friends for years together countless amount of times and I could count on her for anything. This act must have lead from something serious.
Karma is a sneaky one!! You all better watch what you say cause you don’t know how it will bite you back. Your son or daughter may be gay!! Your own spouse may cheat on you or live! Your child may abandon you when they come of age and see the hate in your blood.
