Signs help visitors find their way downtown

New green markers have gone up recently at some of Augusta's major entry points welcoming visitors to the Garden City.

"It's most entrances to the city," said Augusta City Administrator Fred Russell. "That's what this phase was -- to try to grab people as they come in."

It's all part of a wayfinding plan by the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Mr. Russell said signs already had been placed at some downtown locations and it was recommended to also have them at Augusta's gateways.

Mr. Russell said he prefers the new markers over past city signs along interstates and other roadways.

"We're trying to modernize a little bit," he said.

The convention and visitors bureau received $50,000 in federal funds from a Preserve America Grant to create the wayfinding plan.

The signs include a mileage count that tells motorists how far they are from the city's center.
