NEW FACES OF THE COMMISSION: Joe Jackson, Corey Johnson and Alvin Mason joined the Augusta Commission this year, replacing Marion Williams and Andy Cheek, whose terms ended, and Bernard Harper, who lost his bid for re-election.

COLISEUM AUTHORITY: The board charged with overseeing the James Brown Arena and Bell Auditorium also saw changes, as Donnie Thompson was appointed by Commissioner Joe Jackson to replace John Manuel, whose term expired, and Johnny Hensley was appointed by Commissioner Jimmy Smith to replace Freddie Sanders, who resigned. Adrian Arnold also left the authority and his seat remains unfilled by the Augusta legislative delegation.

Some things don't change

- In South Carolina, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham easily won re-election for another six-year term.

- It was tougher in Georgia, however, for U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss. A third-party candidate prevented a majority in the Nov. 4 voting, and Mr. Chambliss faced a rough runoff campaign with Democrat Jim Martin, before finally winning Dec. 2.

- Congressman Paul Broun, an outspoken and often independent Republican, appeared vulnerable over the summer, but the Athens-area lawmaker fought off a Democrat challenge on Election Day for a full two-year term.

- Congressman John Barrow, a Democrat, won re-election over Augusta Republican John Stone.

- Also still here: Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver -- his term lasts until 2010.

- Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue, and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford both got mentions as vice presidential possibilities. Both are still governor, and will be through 2010.

As It Is

The coliseum authority has a chance now if they will simply take in all of the advise and knowledge of an excellent business person and just a great person in general. Mr. Thompson will provide for a very positive influence to the authority and his vast knowledge and relationships may greatly help them if they follow his advice. As for the new commissoners, they are also looking up for our community. Many of them such as Joe Jackson really are trying and even have refused to accept money for gas, cell phones, and other items even thought they are entitled to do so. Unfortunatley, there are still a few commissoners who max out their allotments and take every penny they can.

I wonder if they will change the city code this year? BTW that document outlines what is and isn't allowed in the city to include perks none of which are listed for commissioners.

Change the entire RC government system. There are entirely too many characters involved and no consensus. Let the Mayor have the responsibilities, get rid of City Manager and all Commissioners. A Cabinet of departmental heads would exist to administrate as necessary. Not only could Richmond County move ahead into the 21st century, it could save millions in redundant expense, improve existing services, and offer new and exciting opportunities to Augustans. In order to ease the plight of the suffering, we must raise the overall quality of life for everyone. Change only occurs if all work together. Together.

I am not a racial person. My grandson has a white mother and a black father, just like Obama. However, he is not considered black. He is considered biracial. Isn't Obama the first biracial presicent, instead of the first black president?

mable8

You are correct dail1, Obama is the first biracial president and not the first 'black.' However, individuals of mixed races will generally identify with one group over the other; in Obama's case, he prefers to be considered 'black' which, by the way, is not a race or ethnic group--it is a color identification and nothing more. The actual racial designation is Negroid and the ethnic group can be Ethiopian, Afrikkaner, Senegalese, etc. In the same manner, 'whites' are actually Caucasian as a race, but are Anglo-Saxon, Spanish, Italian, Germanic, Dutch, etc as ethnic groups. Only the Jewish people are unique in that they are not just the racial group, but the ethnic group as well--no other racial group shares that uniqueness. You can learn a great deal about races and ethnicity in any good encyclopedia or anthropological work that focuses on human racial compositions. It may sound like dry reading, but in reality, it is a fascinating topic that helps one to learn about one's heritage and take pride in the fact that their background is rich in history, regardless of which term describes their race and ethnicity. There are only 5 racial groups, but hundreds of ethnical groups.

Jewish people are a race? I don't think so. Go back to your encyclopedia.
