Shooting is lesson to stop for police

  • Follow Letters

In reference to the letter "Editorial was divisive, presumptuous" by Linda Gregory (Dec. 22), I'd like to ask Ms. Gregory a couple of questions.

If her children were playing in the yard and Justin Elmore, while fleeing from the officers, veered off the road and ran them over, would she still think the officers should have just "jumped or ran out of his way" and let him go?

What if, in the ensuing chase, he crashed into a family and killed them? Would she still believe it is a good idea to let this career criminal, with a history of fleeing from the police, just go? Or would she prefer the police just let all criminals run away and never be caught or punished for their crimes?

The officer who fired on Elmore was on foot. He was walking toward Elmore's car. He did not have the protection of his squad car around him. After seeing Elmore ramming another officer's car and steering toward him, he had no doubt Elmore would have no problem running him over. He was faced with a 3,500-pound weapon aimed directly at him, and he did what he had to do to stop the threat.

It is always tragic when someone loses their life, but police officers put their lives on the line for us every single time they go to work. Sometimes they have to make split-second, life-and-death decisions -- decisions none of us would ever want to make.

Elmore was not some innocent bystander gunned down; he was a career criminal trying to flee from police. He was wrong for not stopping. He was wrong for aiming his car at a police officer, and sadly he paid the ultimate price. Let this be a lesson to all of us: When the police say stop, stop !

Once again, I say GOOD FOR

Once again, I say GOOD FOR YOU, RCSO!! You made a righteous kill, and I hope his soul burns in hell for eternity. He was a subhuman piece of excrement, and did not deserve to live.

We need more good high

We need more good high profile killings to prevent would be criminals from acting. It has been a very fine holiday season indeed. Our Richmond County Sheriffs Department is the best. Merry Yule Tide to all

JUSTUS4, you are an idiot.

JUSTUS4, you are an idiot. You obviously dont know what the hell you are talking about. The writer was not refering to minorities. In case you didn't see the news, back in 2005 Columbia County deputies chase a vehicle into Richmond County. The vehicle stopped on River Watch Pkwy and was surrounded by police cars. The driver, A WHITE MALE, tried to ram through the patrol cars and was shot once. In this case, there were more than ten rounds shot at the driver but only one hit him. I don't recall the white community raising hell and starting riots over the shooting. You need to know your facts JUSTUS4. The shooting of Justin Elmore is being used as an excuss for the hoodlums in the projects to do what they do best....disregard the law and act stupid. Their just [filtered word] off that there is a high presence of police in their hood which is killing their dope sales. Bunch of D.A.'s!!!

justus4, Impersonating an

justus4, Impersonating an officer? Are you for real? A marked police car behind you, a marked police car in front of you, blue lights going, a third patrol car approaching and you say that someone may have been impersonating an officer. A uniformed deputy pointing a firearm at you as you approach in a vehicle after just ramming a patrol car and the best you can come up with is that he is black and someone may be impersonating an officer. ANY "Citizen" whose actions include ramming patrol cars and failing to stop for a deputy pointing a weapon at you are surely subject to being shot and unfortunately possible killed. You take something that happened in probably less than 30 seconds and try to tie it to race. Did you see the SUV - I doubt the deputy could even tell the person was black except for maybe a split second when the vehicle was coming towards him after ramming a patrol car. Your ignorance does nothing positive for you or your race. At times, it think your rational is so ignorant that maybe you are just a racist white person posing these stupid arguments just to cause tensions with others cause it is hard to fathom that anyone could be so ignorant.

ALF, you can quote one

ALF, you can quote one scripture all you wish but until you know the bible and study the meanings behind each statement, etc. then you shouldn't be quoting. You could for instance discuss that God commands we follow the laws of the land, you could talk about an eye for an eye, etc. The "bible thumpers" as you refer to them are aware of what the bible says, although it is a continuing learning process. Many instances of self defense and persons of authority are discussed where death is the sentence rendered and it is perfectly acceptable. If this repeat offending criminal would simply have obeyed directives or even better yet, just followed the laws of the land, he would be alive today.

Icanusethat....Do you really

Icanusethat....Do you really think the MEDIA who hasn't exactly taken the side of the police and love headlines that stir up trouble and sell papers wouldn't have been "Cops shoot at car and barely miss child inside"? Get a clue and stop repeating rumors from people who don't know anything. I don't believe you to be acurate either in 30 shots being fired because the Sheriff has already discussed the number of shots but it will be in the official GBI report unless you belive they all lie as well and would prefer to belive rumors from person to person. Furthermore, if their was a child in the car the you should be irate with Elmore for placing a child in jeopardy because if their was a child, he knew it from the start but the police sure as hell wouldn't know. Your arguments are lame either way but IF you were right, then Elmore is even more pathetic than just being a drug dealing attempted cop killer.

I personally know the letter

I personally know the letter writer and I can tell you people a thing or two. First, she is a very liberal democrat without a racist bone in her body. There is not one thing racist in her editorial, it couldn't be because her mind doesn't think that way. Second, had this been a bad shoot she would be screaming along with you...but it wasn't and she knows it. She is someone who likes Al Sharpton, thought OJ was innocent and supported Obama and was thrilled to vote for him! To call her editorial a racist screed is wrong on so many levels. And I agree with "As It Is" when he says the media would have salivated over the story had a child been in the car. Elmore's shooting would have been a mere side note had officers fired on a car with a child inside! We have heard so much since the riots after the shooting that the rioters didn't even live in Cherry Tree. Personally I think all housing developments like Cherry Tree should be gated like Westlake with guards at each entrance making sure only people who live there or people they've invited be allowed entry. I think it would cut down on a lot of the violence and drug activity that goes on now. But that's just my opinion.

GAGIRL I agree with you.

GAGIRL I agree with you. However because of the way it is laid out there are far two many ways to get in and out. My suggestion would be to build several high rises, maybe four with a big court yard in the middle so the children can play, then fence it in. You have security and a safe place for residents and authorized guess to be.

That would be ideal, but we

That would be ideal, but we have to work with what we have Hypo...maybe the answer would be to close or blockade all but two or three entrances. If 15 officers are being used to police all the housing developments I think this would be a better use of their time, and there would be a record of everyone entering the area. If it works for high dollar places like Westlake, surely nobody would object to doing it at Cherry Tree.

well, to all the black racist

well, to all the black racist pigs who are ignorant and unknowledgeable...It was truly funny how there were about 10 legimate witnesses during the incident in cherry tree, that confirmed the deputies version of it. Of course, they would never want there names put out there due to the rest of you calling them uncle Toms or something like that. Its the other 200 people who came out the woodwork like the roaches you are, that tried to lie and say whatever they wanted to say. You fools just made yourself look as stupid an uneducated as you are.

AS IT IS: Your right. I

AS IT IS: Your right. I shouldn't be quoting the Bible unless I run it by you first since you are the one and only subject matter expert concerning the great book. It's funny how 10 different people can read a passage and have 10 different meanings don't you think? We are all unique and have had different life experiences. Perhaps this is the reason we have so many different denominations and religions out there? I'm sure they are all right don't you think? Go drink some more koolaid and I'll continue to quote whatever the heck I want! You know why? Because good people gave their lives to give us the right to do so. So shut your pie hole.

I am sure if Justin Elmore

I am sure if Justin Elmore would have been a white male, and pulled the same idiotic stunt he did at the Cherry Tree projects, it would have gotten him the same result. I am sure the RCSD deputy wouldn't have let the thug run him over had he been white instead. Get over the race issue. Elmore was a loser, a criminal, a thug, and a threat to society, and we the tax payers were already footing the bill for people just like him who are living at Cherry Tree and too damn lazy to work.

perhaps the cherry tree

perhaps the cherry tree residents should have picked a better choice of issues to scream about. certainly, bullets flying everywhere is a valid point to address; the shooting of a known drug dealer in their area, though, seems to be sending the wrong message: "he's one of ours, so we are defending him." why would anyone claim an unrepentant loser who was told not to come around anymore and, in violating a lawful request to stop his vehicle, was shot dead for attempting to use his vehicle as a weapon against police? seems that cherry tree residents could find a better role model and martyr than this dead thug.

The problem in America today

The problem in America today with many young people is a lack of respect for the law, decency, and authority. Working in a school system, I see it daily. I also see parents that condone, and in some appalling cases, encourage non-compliance with laws, rules, and procedures. These young people are being setup for a life of failure and misery by these so called, "parent(s)." This idiot tried to run over a police officer and was gunned down. Why? Not some great conspiracy by the "man," but lousy parents and other "adults" that failed to teach their child respect for the law. I'm sick of all of you apologists out their making excuses for criminal behavior. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. Quit being ignorant and making excuses. Get your kids in church, teach them respect and the importance of decency.
