Recession dampers light show

For years, Flintrock Way off Flowing Wells Road in Columbia County has attracted scores of visitors in their cars for the Christmas light display.

But this year things are a little darker, with neighbors citing everything from a bad economy to a key organizer moving.

"It's just not the same," said Flintrock Way resident Roy McAlexander, who put up lights this year.

Residents say they're no longer having problems backing from their driveways because fewer cars are visiting this year.

In previous years, Joe King, a Flintrock Way resident, added to the winter wonderland with lights outside his house. This year, Mr. King jokingly refers to the fallen foliage in his yard as his contribution, "I'm doing Christmas leaves."

Mr. King said that working more than one job amid an uncertain economy simply hasn't afforded him the time for Christmas decorations. Mr. King, who is in the rental property and restaurant business and also works 10-hour days as a welder, said he has a hunch others in his neighborhood might be like him.

"I think it's a little bit a sign of the times," he said of what he estimates is about 30 percent fewer lights on and around homes in his neighborhood.

But other factors include at least one neighborhood home is in foreclosure and one home is vacant and up for sale, Mr. King said.

Mr. King and many other neighbors said one of the biggest changes is the absence of the homeowner who several years ago helped start the tradition of multiple homes lighting up in a show of unity.

"I think the main (reason) was the people that moved away," agreed resident Bob Robinson. "They were sort of the ones that got it started."

"I think it's just a sad year," Mr. King added.

But he still hopes for the communal display.

"Some of them are still not decisive," Mr. King said. "They might go ahead and do it (put up lights). Who knows? I just might get some time here."

And leading the way will be homeowner Phil Vrana, who each year puts out a lighted arrow guiding visitors to the neighborhood.

"I'm not going to give it up," he said.

I am sorry to hear that the neighborhood won't be putting out as many of the Christmas displays as they have in the past. My family has made it a ritual for years to ride though and enjoy their abundance of lights. Knowing the work that was involved my husband and I could always appreciate all their hard work, while our children and grandchildren have always enjoyed the Christmas lights. It was a great way to add to the Christmas spirit!

This is sad. The kids always enjoyed this ride to see the houses all lit up. It was always, "ride back by again".....
