Man arrested in armed robbery of gas station

A 24-year-old Augusta man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in the armed robbery of a gas station.

Phillip Nathaniel Gregory, of the 1400 block of Poplar Street, was charged with felony armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to Richmond County jail records.

The robbery occurred about noon Wednesday at a Circle K on Gordon Highway when witnesses said a man entered the store with a handgun.

The man demanded money and fled the store on foot with an unknown amount from the store's cash registers, according to a sheriff's office report.

School's skeleton walks away

Augusta State University police are looking for a missing person. Sort of.

Authorities are offering a $100 reward to anyone who can help recover the school's well-known anatomical skeleton, affectionately referred to as "Slim."

The skeleton was stolen from Washington Hall about two weeks ago, according to Jasper Cooke, the director of ASU's Public Safety.

It was used as a model by the art department for students in drawing classes, Mr. Cooke said.

"They finally got a new one last year and in the last couple weeks it grew legs and walked," he said.

The skeleton -- a model and not formerly human -- is valued at about $1,500. Anyone with information can contact the public safety department at (706) 737-1401.

Woman in default on check-cashing charge

A $360,000 default judgment was entered against a Hephzibah woman accused of cashing in her mother's benefits checks.

The U.S. Attorney's Office filed the claim on behalf of the Railroad Retirement Board against Shirley Friar in July.

The complaint contended Ms. Friar cashed her mother's widow benefits payments over a four-year period after her mother died in 1988. The government demanded treble damages for the $120,000 it claimed Ms. Friar took.

Ms. Friar, who didn't respond to the complaint, was found in default Tuesday.

Bank robber sentenced to 30 months in prison

An Augusta man, who robbed a bank in Aiken County last year, has been sentenced in federal court to 30 months in prison.

Darrell Eugene Spires, 56, pleaded guilty in August to the Oct. 10, 2007, robbery of the Security Federal Bank in Langley.

According to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Columbia, Mr. Spires stole $3,100 in cash.

Reality

Well, 30 months in jail for robbing a bank, sounds like a good deterrent....I have had car loans twice as long as his sentence...........

patriciathomas

OKay, another career criminal. We need to lock Gregory up for ten years and release him so he can commit another crime.

stewartist

You make a credible point PT, but 10 yrs in Prison is a long time when you're staring at the walls on a daily basis, thinking about what you've done. think about where you were 10 yrs ago, and reflect on the time...hopefully this young man will finally understand his mistake.

stillamazed

Stewart list even you have to admit that a 30 month sentance is nothing, especially considering he will not actually even serve 30 months......criminals need to pay for their actions, perhaps if the first sentance is a stiffer one then maybe they will have time to reflect and not want to go back for a second or third time.

curly123053

30 years for robbing a bank? Who said crime does not pay ?

getalife

I don't think a 30 month sentence with only about a third of that having to be served, is enough to deter these people from committing the same crime over and over.

gamc30909

Curley123063 re-read it is not 30 years.

gamc30909

Isn't it amazing. We have another idiot arrested right across the road from where the other Idiot was Killed by Police the other day. That speaks wonders for that area. This time for robbing a Circle K. Must be huge Democrat Population, bet they all voted Obama just based on Color.

elliottness

gamc30909 educated folks voted for obama, not the trash that graces these pages daily.

gamc30909

Not the Democrats in Cherry Tree, if they are educated I will kiss my wifes Azz. If they we educated they would not be living in the system. They would be out working and not loafing around and getting in trouble all day. The were the ACORN targets, because they are to ignorant to think for themselves, or do for themselves.

gamc30909 Obama has nothing to do with crime in Richmond County.

Little Lamb

Well, when Mr. Spires gets released on parole in, say 24 months, I'm sure part of his probation agreement will be to rob all future banks in Georgia only.

gamc30909

Rose you onesided nut if Damnbama is not responsible for it neither is Bush as you think.

FallingLeaves

10 year sentence usually ends up only being 5 sometimes less. Check the paroles page today if you don't believe me.
