Seven families lost their homes early Wednesday when a fire destroyed part of an Augusta apartment complex.

The fire broke out about 7:30 a.m. at Traditions at Augusta apartments off Walton Way Extension, authorities said.

Joe Maypole, executive director of the Augusta Chapter of the Red Cross, said their volunteers and staff are supplying temporary housing to the families and will be giving them food and clothing.

A fire in February at the same apartment complex was caused by flammable materials being stored in a unit, according to Richmond County Fire Chief Howard Willis.
