AUGUSTA, Ga. - Carlos L. "Pete" Mills, 84, loving husband of the late Minnie H. Mills, entered into rest on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Doctors Hospital. The family will receive friends at 12:00 noon, on Friday, December 19, 2008 at Flowers Funeral Home on Oxford Rd., in Henderson, NC, and then proceed to Sunset Gardens for a graveside service. Coach Mills was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He later moved to Henderson, NC, where he became a star athlete and met his future wife, Minnie Hughes. Pete served in the Navy during WWII. He graduated from Appalachian State University as a winning quarterback for the Mountaineers. He moved with his family to Portsmouth, VA, where he became a very successful football and baseball coach and teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School in the early 1950's. Later he earned his Masters Degree from The College of William and Mary and became an Assistant Principal. Pete retired in the early 1980's and moved with his wife to Myrtle Beach, SC, which he called Paradise, where he enjoyed playing golf and taking walks on the beach. Survivors include his daughter, Peggy M. Madden and husband Ken of Appling, GA; two sons, Bill C. Mills and wife Petra of Augusta, GA, Peter S. Mills of Louisburg, NC; two brothers, Bernard D. Mills of Long Beach, CA, Anthony P. Mills and wife Mary of Snow Camp, NC, two grandchildren, Jessica M. Mills and Nicholas G. Madden and wife Shasta. In addition to his wife, Pete was preceded in death by his parents, the late M.C. Mills and Laura Belle Mills. The family would like to thank all of his family, friends, former players, and caregivers for giving him such a wonderful life and remembering him in his failing years.
