Shooting triggers chaos

  • Follow Metro

People hurled rocks and bottles at Richmond County sheriff's deputies Sunday after word spread that police had shot a fleeing suspect near the Cherry Tree Crossing housing project off 15th Street.

Many in the loud, angry crowd of perhaps 200 people said the suspect had been killed, but a Richmond County coroner said at 11:30 p.m. that his office had not been notified.

Augusta Commissioner Corey Johnson, whose district includes the housing project, said he had been told the man was hospitalized in critical condition. Officials would not confirm his name or identify the hospital.

"They don't think he's gonna make it," Mr. Johnson said.

Extra deputies were called in to handle crowd control, and gunfire was heard at the scene after nightfall.

"That's not the answer," Mr. Johnson said. "The riot is not the answer. It's not gonna help get to the bottom of the situation."

Several fires were set in large trash bins around the community, and fire department officials advised their units to leave them alone to burn out.

Sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said the incident on Carver Drive near the 15th Street intersection began at 4:21 p.m. and involved two sheriff's officers. He said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had taken over the case, and he referred questions to the agency.

In an interview at the Sheriff's Office, GBI Agent Pat Morgan said early Sunday evening that he had reviewed the scene and was preparing to interview witnesses.

"This is my first time working a shooting in Richmond County like that," he said when asked about the crowd.

Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength is expected to hold a briefing today, Lt. Peebles said.

Mr. Johnson, the district's commissioner, said Sunday night that he was told the Sheriff's Office got a tip that a stolen black SUV was in the area, carrying drugs and guns. Police found the Chevrolet and boxed it in, parking one police car in front and one behind.

Mr. Johnson said he was told the driver tried to escape, backing into the car behind him and ramming the one in front. The driver was shot while apparently trying to ram the squad car in front, Mr. Johnson said.

After the shooting, witnesses said the suspect's car continued to go down the street, stopping when it ran into a gate near a tree.

Mr. Johnson said that when the driver made the choice to ram police cars, he turned his vehicle into a weapon, giving police justification to defend themselves.

"It's just an unfortunate situation," Mr. Johnson said. "I hate that a man got shot. I hate that it happened the way it did," he said.

politicallyncorrect - you are

politicallyncorrect - you are correct on all counts. As_it_is, you are toally corrrect as well. To all of you felon huggers -- Sheriff Strength has two jobs, and if he can't do this, then he needs to be replaced --- Protect LAW ABIDING CITIZENS, and make sure his deputies go home safe each night. Anything else is unacceptable. Hisfaith2003 -- you have been drinking the kool-aid again. If my son was STUPID enough to ram a police car, he deserves a bullet, so that the second job above is done. Of course, my son would not have been that stupid. And I agree that people who live in public housing are being given a gift -- abuse it, and find your butt on the street.

This is only going to get

This is only going to get worse. The guy should have stopped. Regardless of the fact that this shouldn't be a race issue it will become one. Anytime there is an incident between cops and blacks it is a race issue and it shouldn't be. The cops were justified in their actions. I know I wouldn't want a person speeding through my neighborhood trying to escape from the cops. When did this lack of respect for authority figures become so prominent?? It's everywhere. The parents of these folks seriously fell down on the job.

The ignorance of some of you

The ignorance of some of you amazes me! The alleged "victim" here rammed two police cars after being ordered to stop. The RCSD took appropriate action. If you don't agree with what happened, try changing the criminal behavior instead of taking sticks and stones to the people trying to protect you.

I can't believe that this

I can't believe that this type of thing keeps happening. The cops have truely become cowards. The problem here is clearly that some cops are racist and the others are cowards. This is the kind of thing that happens when you let racist and cowards carry guns. It's sad that some people don't understand our justice system. The cops are atempting to convict and sentence people right in the streets. We must remember that this person was innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

whyworry -- Boy, are you stupid. He became guilty when he decided to use his vehicle as a weapon, aimed towards a law enforcement officer. He was no longer innocent. As I have said before, I'm sorry for his family, but will not shed a single tear for him.

All that doesn't matter. If

All that doesn't matter. If the police use bumping into one of their cruisers as an excuse to shoot, they are overstepping their bounds. They can say ANYTHING to cover their [filtered word]es and it gets reported as FACT. There isn't anyone there to question their version. Car theft, hitting a police car and selling drugs ARE NOT crimes that carry the death penalty. DO NOT let those who are paid to post in this forum cloud your judgement. DO NOT let them elevate hitting a police car into a viable reason to commit murder. Think about it people, anyone can call in an "anonymous tip" on you and your house, say they saw you doing something wrong. Then, as you are backing out of your driveway, you bang into a police car that rushed up behind you to investigate the tip. All of a sudden, YOU are in the same position this man that was shot last night was in. You haven't done anything wrong, but if you don't think you'll be shot, then you are sadly mistaken. Do you think that they will make you out to be the great citizen? They will dig up everything you ever did wrong and justify killing you just as they will with this man. STOP THE MADDNESS NOW!!

The person who got shot tried

The person who got shot tried to 'shoot' the police with his vehicle. The police had the right to defend him/herself. The people in Cherry Tree put the cart before the horse and started raising sand before they knew what was going on. The person in the vehicle, whether it was stolen or not, should not have been bringing guns and drugs into the community. The people in the community should not have been setting fires at all and definitely not in your own community. All of you should have been somewhere praying for peace in this very troubling time and praying for the person who was shot. Where was your county commissioner?, he should have been there trying to help keep the peace, that's a real commissioner. A mega church was in the community, leaders from that church should have also been there to aid the community/police. Is it really a "church without walls"? I am a former resident of Cherry Tree Crossing and I must say that I am disappointed by the actions of my brothers and sisters. I pray that the person shot will have a speedy recovery' we must remember that God's will is the only way for the violence to end.

The IV Amendment refers to
Unpublished

The IV Amendment refers to searches and things to be seized. This vehicle was reported to be stolen, so there are documents stating who is the correct owner. Who reported the vehicle stolen? Where is the report? Oh yeah, it just came over the radio but no written evidence... HA! "An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everyway" Martin Luther King, Jr 1963.

Whyworry, the rcso was

Whyworry, the rcso was attempting to get these people to go to court so they could prove guilt. Then the scum turned the car into a weapon. The scum chose to fight instead of allowing the court system to work, so how does that make the rcso rasist or cowards? Maybe you should walk in there shoes for a while and have to deal with the scum they deal with and have your loved ones wonder if you will survive he day or whether some scum bag will run over you or shoot you.

It does not matter if there

It does not matter if there were guns and/or drugs in the SUV. It was stolen and then this thug used it as a weapon. The bottom line here is when you are told to do something by someone the police or your parents do it or deal with the punishment.

justus...if the police turn

justus...if the police turn on their lights behind your vehicle you are under arrest until such time as they allow you to leave. Failure to stop is a crime. Tryng to run into the deputies car is assault with deadly intent. I don't understand which part of this you don't understand? Are you saying if you are a black man in the projects and a deputy tries to pull you over you don't have to stop because you are black? Or are you saying that because you are black you don't have to follow any rules? The truth of the matter is this could happen to anyone of us that decide we are above the law and try to escape a traffic stop by ramming police cars. I am sure the cars have video tape and after the GBI completes their investigation they will be released. I think Hypo has it right on this one. You cannot curse the very entity that gives you a place to live and allow these criminals into your neighborhood. The shame of it is good people that live in Cherry Tree get a bad rap because of these knuckleheads.

Let;s see hear, The Police

Let;s see hear,
The Police Officer, one who takes an oath to protect and serve. one who kisses his wife and kids when leaving for his tour of duty not knowing if it might be the last time he is gonna see them. One who is willing to give his life so that others may live. one who when the scum you may hang around or nuts up on you, will come inside to rescue you when the scum has a gun pointed at your scull. The men and women who go places the public refuses to go. The ones we call on when we are afraid. The ones we crucify without thought or facts when they defend theirselves. We ask all these things of them to remain safe but aspect them to die rather than defend their lives. any time someone is shot it is truly a bad thing. But would this had happened at all if the person had obeyed the law or where they trying to get away at any cost which caused this thing to happen. there is a story of a man who turned his head while another man robbed the community. The man did nothing to stop the criminal. The same criminal ended up killing the man's wife. be careful when you defend criminals and before you judge be sure the people your judging are wrong. Justice will prevail.

Blacks will never lose the

Blacks will never lose the mob mentality. No matter what a black person does or says they are never wrong in another black person's eye. Take Marion Berry in Washington. According to blacks he was set up. Let me let you in on a secret, most sting operations are set-ups and if you take the bait you going to jail!!!. That's one reason why whites and blacks will never see eye to eye becasue blacks take no responsibility for their actions.

Isn't it sad that society

Isn't it sad that society would rather a criminal go free than support the law enforcement when they are protecting citizens. IF no one would have approached this thug, innocent lives could have been affected but if these people do not want to be protected then pull the RCSD out of their neighborhood and then see what happens.
