Korean War bricks are tough sell

A monument to Georgians and South Carolinians who served in the Korean War was dedicated at Broad and Fourth streets in Augusta in December 2004.

The committee responsible for the monument continues to sell bricks, which are placed on the ground near the 20-foot-long, 9-foot-tall memorial, according to Clyde Hooks, the secretary/treasurer of the Korean War Memorial Committee of the Central Savannah River Area.

"The sale of bricks has been very slow," Mr. Hooks said. "There is still space on the east side (of the monument.)"

Individuals and organizations, including the Disabled American Veterans and the Fort Gordon Sergeants Major Association, have already bought memorial bricks and had them placed near the monument. The bricks cost $100 each and have space for three lines and about 13 characters a line.

Mr. Hooks said the committee would like to enhance the area around the monument with a sidewalk and some benches. Members are waiting to hear from the city of Augusta on their proposed upgrades.

The Korean War memorial lists the names of more than 750 people who served during the war. About 85 of them died in the war or were missing in action.

To find out more about the memorial or to buy a brick, call Mr. Hooks at (803) 278-1039 or e-mail koreanwar1950@bellsouth.net.

An application to buy a brick can be obtained by writing to Korean War Memorial, P.O. Box 6234, North Augusta, SC 29861.
