Mother pleads to caller in son's shooting death

  • Follow Metro

An anonymous late-night phone call has investigators and a grieving mother begging for help.

During a Thursday news conference at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, Lt. Scott Peebles made a direct plea and offered a $1,000 reward to the unidentified caller who seemed to know a lot about Tuesday's fatal shooting of Daniel McGee. Mr. McGee, 21, was shot in the head in the 1900 block of Starnes Street while returning on an errand for a disabled relative.

"Speaking to the person who called yesterday evening and provided very specific information ... we understand you wish to remain anonymous and will not reveal your identity under any circumstances," Lt. Peebles said.

The caller briefly talked to a Richmond County dispatcher Wednesday night but hung up before authorities could get his name, Lt. Peebles said.

Mr. McGee's mother, Vallery, fought back tears Thursday as she described a hard-working young man who was in town to take care of his handicapped uncle.

"I'm really going to miss my son," said Ms. McGee. "This is the first Christmas I will be without my child."

Mr. McGee was sitting on a curb when deputies found him in very early Tuesday morning. He had biked to the Kroger store on 15th Street from his uncle's home in the Bon Air Apartments to pick up two bottles of soda, police said. Bleeding from a gash on his head, deputies sent him to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital for what was initially though to be a minor wound -- possibly caused by a fall from his bicycle. It wasn't until he arrived at emergency room that doctors discovered he had been struck with a small caliber bullet, Lt. Peebles said. Investigators said he might have been robbed.

"We can't say conclusively but its at the top of our list of theories," he said. "It's the most probable motive."

HYPOCRITES 08

It's a crying shame that this Mother must bury her son over some sorry [filtered word] low life. How much money did this or these [filtered word] think that someone riding a bike at 4:00 AM would have on them? It is getting to the point that we cannot take a chance that a jury would do the right thing, especially considering that jackazzes on the Brian Nichols jury.

I agree and I hope that the person will come forward with more information and at least give this family some peace of mind. Nothing will bring her child back but at least she would know that the person who committed this horrible crime will be behind bars. I can only imagine what she must be going through. These criminals have no mercy so why should we have mercy on them. And the government wants to take away law abiding citizens right to bear arms. I don't think so............

My prayers are with this heart broke mother. I pray that justice is served and this crime is solved quickly. Stories like this are especially heartbreaking during the holiday season.

It's sad but I think these types of crimes are going to increase. My neighbor was robbed at gunpoint in his driveway last week. I now own a Glock A29

me too

First, again I send my heartfelt sympathy to this young man's family and friends for their loss. Such a senseless crime. Now to all the posters yesterday who were "suspicious" as to why this young man was out at 4am going to Kroger to get drinks - I hope you're all ashamed of yourselves. This was a young man looking after a disabled relative. Not everyone lives the 9-5 life, there are many of us who work the graveyard shift or are Night Owls and 4am is our "mid day".

My prayers are with this family during this sad time of losing their son and loved one. Why would someone in this day and time ride a bike from Bel Air to Kroger's at this time of morning though for two bottles of soda?SusieQ

To all you thugs out there... If you want to rob a middle aged white guy with glasses, I've got a full magazine I'll share with you. Merry Christmas.

SusieQ, he was coming from Bon Air not Bel Air. Bon Air is not far from Kroger.

This is exactly the reason why they need to go through Harrisburg and clean it out of the riff- raff and trash. Everyone knows that you can get anything you want in Harrisburg, and it's time to clean it up and out. I have to go that way at times and I'm scared to death to go in Harrisburg in the day, I can't imagine going there at night. The city needs to put something on the budget and start getting people out and cleaning it up for decent people and move more decent families in with children.
Go through there with a bull dozer and tear down the old abandoned homes, make the landlords clean up their properties and yards, even some people that live there now their yards look like a garbage dump..........people show some pride in you home! You may not live in the best home or neighborhood, but you can keep your homes and yards clean and show more pride in your community.
Please clean and out Harrisburg!!!!!!!

I had a relative that stayed there and I went there to pick one of my relatives up and I saw with my own eyes a drug deal in broad daylight. The guy pulled up, one guy came off the porch, they slapped hands and the guy got back into the truck and drove away. I was stunned.

Justice will prevail.

They should start a fund to get that killer off the street. If one is started I would gladly donate to it. I cant imagine what the mother is going through at this time. Losing your child like that has to be agony. If anyone knows this family lets help them out and find the killer of this innocent child.

Amen hypocrites08, I couldnt possibly agree with you more!!!

There IS no justice in a case such as this if this story is accurate. IF the perpetrator is ever caught and convicted, some attorney will spend untold thousands of taxpayer dollars trying to convince a jury that his client (court appointed of course or paid with funds from some group sympathetic to murderers) was wrongly convicted and should be spared any thought of a death penalty or long term in prison. If you don't believe it, check in on the Troy Anthony Davis case in Savannah - a man duly convicted of the murder of a police officer, duly sentenced to death, but yet he received a hearing before the district federal court of appeals AFTER he had many hearings by other courts and his case had been turned down by the U S Supreme Court, wrongly believed to have the final authority in the matter. So get ready ARC for a long battle IF this person is ever found.

If his family is reading this my name is Alexandra.. I am one of his ex girlfriends if you could plese email me @ littlebrat706@yahoo.com and please let me know when his funeral is. I would appreciate that with all of my heart. I am going to miss him alot. He was a great person and whoever did this to him should be locked away for a long long time! Any one who knew Dee knew that he was a good person and never bothered anyone. I lived in Harrisburg for 17 years.. I met Daniel 3 years ago when he lived on Hicks Street he was the sweetest person I ever met. Im sorry this had to happen to him.

hisfaith2003

I wouldn't care if he was going from his yard to yours susieQ. Until it is at your door!!! hum.. These are a punch of punks or a punk to run from something he beleive is right. This young man was not in a accident. He was killed and lift to die in the street. Do you think that is ok? NO, My prays goes out to this family. No parent should have to bury there child...NO ONE..
