Man burned in yard fire dies

An 82-year-old Graniteville man died Tuesday after suffering burns when his clothes caught fire.

William C. Hicks Sr., of the 300 block of Avis Street, was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m. at his home, according to the Aiken County coroner.

Mr. Hicks apparently was trying to burn dead grass on his lawn when the fire ignited his clothing, a statement from the coroner said.

He died from a cardiac arrhythmia caused by second- and third-degree burns to 95 percent of his body, Coroner Tim Carlton said.

No autopsy is scheduled.

Shooting victim dies after wounds mistaken

A 21-year-old Augusta man died Tuesday of wounds suffered in an early morning shooting in the Harrisburg area.

Daniel D. McGee was sitting on the curb near his bicycle in the 1900 block of Starnes Street when deputies arrived shortly after 4 a.m., authorities said.

He was disoriented and had a head injury, which police initially attributed to a fall from the bike, according to Lt. Scott Peebles.

It wasn't until he was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment that authorities discovered he had been shot, Lt. Peebles said.

Mr. McGee lived in the Bon Air Apartments on Walton Way with his handicapped uncle, Lt. Peebles said.

Police believe he was on his way home after purchasing drinks for the relative from the Kroger on 15th Street when he was attacked.

Investigator Paul Godden said it appears he was shot with a small-caliber weapon. A reward is being offered for information in the case.

Anyone with information can call (706) 821-1080 or (866) 939-5050.

Maybe now is the time to build. Lot of jobs provided during the construction.

LOL, Construction jobs go to the illegal aliens so they can send their money to Mexico. Perhaps we should hire more immigration officers to make sure that these jobs go to american citizens.

Good point usnvet. Caffine level was low when I made that post. And thanks for your service, even if it was Navy.

A 4am bike ride to Kroger for something to drink. Sounds a little suspicious to me!

Not everyone works in the daytime. Go out at night sometimes and see what goes on besides sleeping.

34-0 go navy!!!!!!

I suggest when the construction begins, we all get caps made up that read ICE on them. Go stand outside the construction site and ask all workers if they are legal.
If you suspect illegals then get on the phone and call ICE and keep callikng until they come down to investigate. If you don't take actions yourself you are no better than someone waiting on a Welfare chack when they could be working.
Words without actions mean nothing.

The Graniteville man that got burnt must have been using gasoline to help start that fire. If he was to old to be able to get out of the way when he started it, he should have never started it.

I know they estimate (chucle) the center is going to cosst $67 Mil, but have they actually figured out what the cost to maintain it will be? They can build anything with SPLOST money, but the cost to maintain it is through property taxes! Oh well maybe their plan is to do with it like the jail, the museums and the arena, just let it go and then spend millions to renovate it. Just remember that all these SPLOST facilities need property tax funding for people to operate and maintain them!!! And people cost money!! I am glad that Fred was worried about saving a couple of hundred dollars ( we don't have any tents for the commons ?), but, I thought the center was DIRELY needed, like yesterday and now they want to delay work for a week so some big wig can act like they are shoveling dirt?

nadps53jrt: Your comment concerning the elderly man has some merit; however, how many times have younger persons with the ability to know better and get away have done this? For an answer, step over to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital and learn how many persons from around the SouthEast and beyond are treated for the same reason. Heck, I ever knew a firefighter that received significant burns to his lower leg while performing the same act. Stupidity knows no age, socio-economic, or racial barriers.
