Downtown merchants are hoping to entice customers with several special events during the holidays.
Sunday, it was the Downtown Holiday Arts Brunch, which was billed as the "anti-Black Friday."
"We're usually not open on Sunday. We're staying open longer. This is just a kickoff to the holidays," said Ben Riche, who, along with his wife, Claire, owns Vintage 965 at 965 Broad St.
Opened in February 2007, Vintage 965 features vintage clothing, designer purses and handmade earrings.
Another business taking advantage of the holiday event was Oasis Garden at 1034 Broad St., an organic-gardening business. Kate Lee opened her business in September. She offered $5 off any purchase of $25 or more Sunday.
More than a dozen businesses opened Sunday for the event.
Sunday also was opening day for the Casa Blanca Cafe in the White's Building. It was open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
There were also tours of the Miller Theatre.
Many of the participating businesses are members of the Downtown Augusta Alliance.
"I think it's wonderful," said Ms. Lee, who plans to join at the beginning of the year. "It promotes downtown and builds community."
Shoppers can sign up for a free Destination Downtown Augusta card, which offers discounts to more than 35 downtown businesses, including restaurants, shops, museums and service companies.
Mr. Riche said the downtown merchants have two more special events planned this month.
They will be open late on Dec. 11, which is Girls' Night Out, and Dec. 18, which is the Jingle Bell Jaunt.
"It's an artsy type thing. All the stores will be open late, and they will showcase artwork from local artists," he said.
