Burglars take safe from Grovetown City Hall

Grovetown police are investigating an early Wednesday break-in at Grovetown City Hall.

The building on Old Wrightsboro Road was shut down Wednesday for a police investigation, but it's expected to reopen today, Mayor George James said. An employee in the city's Public Works Department called police after noticing the building had been vandalized about 6 a.m., Mr. James said.

The glass in one of the building's rear windows was broken, and a safe was taken that contained about $1,000 in cash and some resident's checks for bill payments.

The safe was found empty along Gordon Highway near the Augusta State Medical Prison on Wednesday afternoon, Mr. James said.

Masked robbers jump elderly couple at home

Two armed men robbed an elderly couple of their cash and a walking cane as they entered their home in the 800 block of Dogwood Lane on Tuesday night.

The victims were carrying a bank deposit bag containing $2,000 when two men in ski masks jumped from the bushes, a Richmond County Sheriff's Office report states. One of the gunmen pulled the victim's pants down before stealing his wallet and fleeing the area, according to the report.

Two suspects named in home invasion case

Investigators have identified two men wanted in a home invasion that happened in November.

Nicholas Nathaniel Johnson, 19, and Dequan Payne, 18, are each wanted on five counts of armed robbery. They are accused of breaking into the Greening Lane home of a 34-year-old woman and stealing clothing and cash, according to a Richmond County Sheriff's Office news release.

Anyone with information can call the sheriff's office at (706) 821-1080.

Deliberations expected in Ware murder case

A jury is expected to begin deliberations today in the case of an Augusta man facing murder charges.

Darrius J. Ware, 20, has pleaded not guilty in Richmond County Superior Court to charges that include murder and vehicular homicide.

According to testimony this week, Mr. Ware was accused of fleeing officers who attempted a traffic stop on Feb. 10, 2007. The stolen vehicle he was driving allegedly hit 37-year-old Theodosia Mack, who was riding a bicycle on Olive Road near Cooney Circle that night. Ms. Mack died from her injuries.

Taser shoot video gets investigator suspended

A Thomson police investigator has been suspended with pay while city officials investigate an off-duty incident with his Taser.

Lt. Scott Whittle was working as an event's security officer in early November, when the incident -- which was videotaped -- occurred.

In the video, the investigator is shown laughing with a group of young people, and a young man asks to be shot with the city-issued Taser.

The man was given a small jolt with the weapon, and he fell to the ground laughing.

Thomson Police Chief John Hathaway said Lt. Whittle was suspended with pay Wednesday, shortly after Chief Hathaway was shown the video by an Augusta television station. City Attorney Jimmy Plunkett is investigating, according to Thomson City Administrator Don Powers. The video was posted on the Internet site Facebook, but it has since been taken down.

I work with Lt. Whittle and he's an outstanding officer! He made a bad mistake in judgement on that day and should be punished! However, the powers that be in the city of Thomson should take into consideration the 16-plus years Lt. Whittle has worked for TPD and the countless hours he works that he isn't compensated for! No excuses for him, but we all fall short sometimes! Keep your head up Scott!!!

patriciathomas

I hate that the elderly couple was robbed, but I wonder if the robber was just making a fashion statement when he pulled the old man's pants down. "You look much younger now" the robber yelled as he ran off.

patriciathomas

If Scott Whittle had been a Democrat tasering his 10 year old son, not only would the t.v. station not have mentioned the incident, but half of the population would be up in arms over the suspension.

whynot2

The video for Lt. Whittle is on wrdw.com still. He made a poor choice and should get a few unpaid days at home for this. He should be thankful this guy didnt have a heart condition. If he had asked to get shot, would have he done that too?

areyoukidding

I am sure if the elderly couple are reading PTs comment this morning that they are finding her as witty as the rest of us do.

jackfruitpaper833

Looks over at PT and whispers: "Jesus".

Does_it_really_matter

At 4:47 am, things are just funnier....I geuss.

_iamthebadamerican

Hey, come on. I laughed at pt's statement, bet you two prunes did too, ha!!!!!

Has anyone heard about an elderly man getting beaten in the bathroom at the Augusta Mall?

jackfruitpaper833

Yep got an email around 9:00 last night from friends, I think the daughter works at MCG. The Mall should have security down that corridor, they also should have more riding around outside. Incidents like this I wish he had had a GUN, you minding your own business and this happens, if he had shot them I for one wouldn't even feel sorry for them. I wonder if this has ties with the other elderly couple with the bank deposits.

MeinAugusta2

5:00smwhr - When did the beating take place at the mall? I heard about the one at Sears a couple of weeks ago, but that wasn't an elderly man. In my opinion, there's a special place for people who abuse children and elderly people.

Concerned Citizen

I the stranger, if the young man would have been seriously injured, would you still feel the same way?

patriciathomas

fruitpaper, don't call me that, even in a whisper

pofwe

Home invasion should be a capitol offense punishable by impalement. And it will be, if my home is invaded

jackfruitpaper833

Hmmm I didn't call you Jesus, I whispered "Jesus" to you. whispers it again: "Jesus"

Taking the name of the Lord in vain ?

DoubleD

I'm going to take my wife downtown today so we can both apply for a concealed carry permit. I'm going to be armed as often as I legally can.

jackfruitpaper833

Hmmm nothing wrong with calling on the name of the Lord, I will bless him at all times, his praises shall continually be in my mouth, oh give thanks unto the Lord for he has done marvelous works from times of old until this day right now. How is this calling the Lords name in vain? People need Jesus, people need to hear the word Jesus, people need to see the word Jesus even if they are unsaved and hard hearted, his name at that time just may prick their hearts and they may repent and except him as their Lord and Saviour. Nevertheless a seed has been planted.

WW1949

Good idea double d, who gives a dadgum if a robber gets shot and killed. Good ridance.
What a dumb kid to ask for a taser test. Maybe he is trying to set up the city for a lawsuit. I hpoe not.

aninsider

The incident from the taser might have stemmed from the fact that most of the folks involved had just gotton off a tally-ho wsagon, which frequently involves a good amount of alcohol refreshment. Scott Whittle is an excellent police officer. He just should have used better judgement; which is, unfortunately, a situation we all have found ourselves in from time to time.

aninsider

And by the way, Patricia Thomas, I always look for your comments because they put a smile on my face in the mornings. Thanks for having a sense of humor.

palomino9

that's great, two more idiots with concealed weapon permits.

rufus

All good Americans: report to the firing range.

DoubleD

Yeah, palomino9, I hope you aren't the next person forced to take your pants down in front of your spouse. How about being humiliated in front of your spouse and children? Or would you like to have your spouse sexually violated while you are forced to watch? I'm sure you'd wish you were armed then. Or would you prefer to endure that pain rather than have to pull the trigger on someone...it seems so. Sorry, but I prefer to do what I'm supposed to do as a man, and that is to protect my family.

DoubleD

People don't understand that those of us who are willing to take the time, spend the money, and CAN pass the background check aren't the ones that are going to shoot someone for looking at us wrong. We are the ones with self-control and obey laws. We don't treat the right to carry as if this is the wild west. Only if I find myself or my family in grave danger will I use it. Remember the girl a couple weeks ago that was kidnapped, raped, and murdered, but mangaged to call 911 from her cell phone before she was killed while in the back of her kidnapper's van? If she had a weapon she'd be alive today, and a murderer would be getting judged in his afterlife.

_iamthebadamerican

DD, don't worry about palomino's comments. She proves time and again she is a flaming, a-hole, idiot!

dale88fan

im getting a permit also so if any democrats break in i can hook em up with some free handouts!

stillamazed

Meinaugusta2, I think that may be the same one, I guess they were talking about him on the news this morning. I had not heard anything about it but I have been out of the loop for a few days. This is why I try to stay away from the mall, I always get leary walking to my ar alone......

DoubleD

Whatever you do SMWHR, don't arm yourself, you should be ready and willing to be assaulted.

KSL

It happened back in November. I believe the victim is 54 and had to have surgery for the injuries he sustained.
