Martin campaign comes to Augusta

  • Follow Metro

City officials and local supporters jammed into the Richmond County Democratic Party headquarters Monday morning to support Democratic U.S. Senate challenger Jim Martin.

Mr. Martin, a former Georgia state representative, and Jim Powell, a candidate for the Public Service Commission, spoke with about 100 voters at the headquarters on 11th Street.

A crowd stood in chilly weather hugging Mr. Martin, asking him questions and raising signs supporting the Democrat, who faces incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss in a runoff today. Mr. Powell faces Lauren "Bubba" McDonald in the PSC runoff.

Joe Frazier, a former volunteer for the Barack Obama campaign, said Mr. Martin's speech Monday gave him confidence that his candidate would win.

"The crowd was a rainbow of colors," Mr. Frazier said. "That's because, like he said, this is not a red state or a red America. It's for all citizens. He has policies for all people."

Mr. Martin's campaign contacted local Democratic officials Friday evening about visiting Augusta, said Lowell Greenbaum, the president of the local party.

"Augusta is very important to his campaign," Dr. Greenbaum said. "Richmond County gave him more votes in Georgia in November than every county except Fulton and DeKalb counties."

Mr. Martin's run is national news, Dr. Greenbaum said. Wins by him and Minnesota Democrat Al Franken would give Democrats 60 votes in the Senate, a filibuster-proof majority, he said.

"If Martin beats Saxby Chambliss, it means Georgia is turning from red to pink to blue," Dr. Greenbaum said. "I think that's why there's been so much support for him."

Martin will turn this state around. We have had enough of the dictatorship bush admin. Martin will produce for the middle class, not bow down to the upper class as chambliss does.

Wow, the entire Richmond County Dem party showed up to hear Martin's really important message. I'm impressed. The pink vote already goes to the Dems.

Pal9 wants to question Palin's huge crowd and Martin has to sqeeze his DIMs into theoir HQ which sure as heck ain't as big as the JBA. Martin ain't a "moderate'. He is a dyed in the wool "progressive" (liberal) DIMocRAT.

Go easy on her gnumbgnuts, topper seems to have had a lot on her plate lately. At least Saxby won. What a relief. And Sarah's rally was quite a success. I was pleased to see she has more than just white supporters, too. I just wish it was a more diverse crowd than it was. It is hard to get out of work to days in a row to come to a rally and then vote the next day, but I'm glad such a large number of people were able to. I'm pleased several thousand turned out, there might have been more, but the line went all the way to halfway past the entrance of the Bell Auditorium. It was a bit chilly for the youngsters especially, that went with their moms. Great speech, great charisma, no "uh's" like Obama, obviously a very intelligent, determined woman of good moral character. Too bad the country didn't recognize that she was better qualified for office than Obama.
