Lynx fans may have attended final game

A rainy afternoon didn't help boost attendance numbers on Saturday night for what may have been the Augusta Lynx's final home game ever, but the dreary day added to a somber pre-game mood.

"I've been crying for the last two days," Lisa Cheadle, a Lynx season-ticket holder, said. "It's so sad. I've been a season-ticket holder for four years, and two of them I was living in Atlanta and drove here for games. This team brought my family together."

Cheadle's tears weren't the only ones shed in the moments before the Lynx began their Saturday night contest against the Charlotte Checkers. Lynx ownership indicated Friday the team may be forced to shut down unless an 11th-hour investor comes to the rescue in a matter of days.

With the next home game scheduled for Dec. 16, Lynx fans realized that Saturday night may have marked the Lynx's final home game in its 11-year history.

"My son is very disappointed," Ron Grickis, a season-ticket holder since the Lynx began play in the 1998-99 season, said. "He's come to games since before he could walk, and this has been a daddy-son thing for a long time. Today he kept saying maybe somebody will give them some money, and I didn't know what to tell him."

Co-owners Dan Troutman and Robert and Jan Hodges Burch have pleaded for financial help to the tune of at least $200,000 to keep the team afloat past next week, but their efforts have been unsuccessful so far.

Troutman said Friday he hoped one of two serious potential investors would attend Saturday's game to see the atmosphere of a home crowd, but neither made the trip from out of town.

Troutman's outlook on the team's future Saturday night didn't change from his statements earlier in the week.

"We're going to continue on our normal schedule until we can't do it anymore," he said. "There's not a fixed date at this point."

The Lynx schedule calls for a road game in Charlotte this afternoon, then a three-game road trip to Mississippi starting Thursday.

Don't buy anything from the LYNX, if you try to get a refund you can forget it. I talk from experience, me and about 20 other people I know!

I saw the press conference video. Jan said they have lost 2.4 million, heck I would be crying too. As in someone take this team away, I cant afford to lose anymore money. Its sad but its time to let it go.

"We will continue to raise admission prices until the seats are full!!!" Nice biz plan, Dan. Taking away complimentary parking passes was a nice idea too. But, the Lady Lynx do have cute uniforms!
