Mom wants to reward her son

  • Follow Metro

An Augusta single mother knows we all have requests at Christmas, but she is asking for help giving her son new clothes and shoes for the holiday.

"He helps me so much," she writes. "He tries so hard. He watches the other children while I work 40 hours a week, getting them ready for school and cleaning up and washing the clothes. He cleans and mops, too.

"He is family-oriented and this is a rarity these days. He was going in the wrong direction but has now turned his life around.

"Please help me to bless my blessing -- my son," she writes.

For 78 years, assistance from The Augusta Chronicle 's Empty Stocking Fund has helped families like this one. Last year, the charity raised a record-breaking $123,000, which went to more than 1,776 families.

Let this mother struggle and whatever she does for her son will have more meaning than if charity give it to her. Many people work 40 hours a week plus. If the kid gets new clothes he might go back in the "wrong direction" that the mother describes. Would you want to be responsible for this happening ? Charity would be unhealthy for these people. There is nothing wrong with their situation now. If the boy gets anything that his mother worked for he will appreciate it far more that he would a charity giving him things. Let decency and character emerge from these poor people don't spoil them.

How cruel can you be SargentMidTown? At least this mother is trying to support herself, we have many out there that all they know is to live off the system and the government keeps letting them do it. And as for her son, I have a son that started down the wrong path at one time but is now doing great. I sure you are not the most perfect person you have made mistakes to. Just because someone makes a mistake don't condemn them for the rest of their life, it's not like he committed murder, give the child a chance. I wish I knew who the mother was I would give directly to her.

SARGENT...Have you heard the saying? If you can't say something good? KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! You don't have to help, but don't concern yourself with what others do. I bet your last name Scoorge. Parents do make a lots of mistakes since life does not come with a book, some do the best they can. Some don't try, but the children should not be punished because their parents have short comeings. So take you Ba-humbug butt back to the hole you crawled out of & do us all a favor AND STAY THERE!

Yea, many people work 40 hours a week, but if you're a single parent with more than one child, that's obviously not enough. SARGENT...you're cold-hearted and you're on the computer at 4:41 in the morning, you obviously have nothing else to do with your life.

Telli...you are right about Sarg's life. He can't sleep because he is to busy worrying about everyone's business, but his own. Planing how to make everyone else's life as miserable as his own? Is a full time job. Misery Loves Company

the measure of a person is how they treat those less fortunate than themselves....how anyone can turn their back on someone in need is beyond me but I hope those who do find some joy in life somewhere

I agree not to spoil children, but in this case this would be a reward the child could be proud of and realize that not just in his mothers eyes but in God's eyes he is doing the right thing and will be rewarded throughout his life if he follows the right path.

Scrooge:"Are there no prisions,no workhouses?"
Older Man:"Both very busy,Sir.'
Scrooge:"The treadmill & the Poor Law are they in full Vigor?"
Man:"Many would rather die than go there!"
Scrooge:"If they would rather die, they had better do it and decrease the surplus population !"
Even Scrooge learned his lesson. Now even he gives to the Empty Stocking Fund.
