Hoping Obama surprises; ready, if not

  • Follow Letters

Many conservative voters fear we are witnessing a stealth transition from the United States of America to the Union of Socialist States of America.

I am particularly angry about this because Mr. Obama did not campaign openly as a socialist. He was careful to sound moderate for the electorate, especially in the carefully choreographed TV infomercials that passed as presidential debates.

His comments to Joe the Plumber and the Rev. Rick Warren revealed far more about him than did any other forum. He knew if he campaigned as a socialist he would lose.

His past political alliances, public statements and sources of financing leave little doubt about his underlying political philosophy. That is why his ties to the Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, and other America-hating radicals are so important.

There were enough people who understood the threat that even in a year that heavily favored Democrats, Obama won by only 6 points; 55 million Americans voted for John McCain.

The mantra from the left is that all Americans must now support Obama "since he is our president." I vehemently reject that viewpoint. I will not be intimidated into submission to Obama's policies just because he is the nation's elected leader; ask the German people where that road leads.

This does not mean I will actively seek to undermine his presidency. Unlike the ethically bankrupt national news media and the rest of the liberals who relentlessly undercut George Bush on virtually every policy decision over the past eight years, I will maintain a stance of loyal opposition. I love my country, and we desperately need solutions to festering problems.

I hope I am pleasantly surprised by the new administration. If Mr. Obama respects our Constitution, our shared values as Americans, and the capitalist model that made us a great nation, then he may win my support. If he attempts to impose a radical left-wing agenda on our nation, as I believe he will, I will be among the many millions who will work to make his a one-term presidency.

Good letter...

Let's at least wait until he takes the oath of office. Hello!!! Bush didn't blow it until he took office. What a mess, took him eight years. HELLO!! TOOT, TOOT for Jim Martin. HELLO!!

GGpap

Mr. Wilde, excellent comment, and I agree wholeheartedly! I would only add that. we would all be wise to remember the statement Orson Welles made in one of his last TV commercials in which we wear all advised to "...do not judge a wine before its' time."

GACopperhead

Since when is reducing what the middle class has to pay socialism? Republicans are whining chicken littles and they deserve everything they get.....or don't get.

bearbryante

wilde, who cares whether you support him or not?you're just another useless face in the crowd.can't stand the fact that the 232 white man hold on the whitehouse was broken?the same constitution that your buffoon president said was just a gd piece of paper?the same prez who spies on you and others and can't face the fisa board because you have to tell who,and why you're spying.when john dean says this group of rogues is worse than nixons,is this the same group that you wanted to return under mccain?i believe it will be a while before your disgusting party gets to rape this country again,so work on that for 4 years if the chinese don't cash their treasury bills in,before then.

Great letter Mr. Wilde. Even though you are ready to give him a chance and see what he can do some of the commenters here are putting you down. And these are the same people that have begged others on this forum to "at least give him a chance and see what he does." They don't want you to just give him a chance they want you to blindly follow "The One". And GAC - the socalism comes in when that reduction comes at the cost of wealth redistribution. If you want more go make more instead of asking to have it handed to you.

Many of you are well enough off that the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good. - Hillary Clinton

Well said Mr. Wilde. Many of these naysayers probably do not know the difference between socialism and capitalism; thus the lack of concern.

JesusIsComing

Good letter, Mr. Wilde.

Megga Dittos` MR. Wilde. I pray too that Obama is transformed when he realizes the magnitude of the office as most (well maybe not Lewinsky Clinton) of the past Presidents have been. Am sure he will protect us from another terrorist strike since 9/11 as GW has. I think once he is debriefed on all the evil in the world he will realize that Bush, while he made major mistakes, wasn't all that wrong. Hopefully, all of us americans, both Dems and Republicans, will learn that spending beyond our means must stop. Yea the republicans are at fault here too. I will give obama that chance to have that life changing revelation.

ldsmith1

Dooley, I would prefer that Presidents have most of their life-changing revelations prior to and as preparation for the Oval Office. I think you are overly naive, but you are certainly not alone.

IncredibleGuy

Well, Obama had no clue what he was getting into...he ran a POP culture campaign utlizing blogs, web, and media.....am just hoping for the best....I agree with you idsmith, but have no choice do we.

christian134

Well written and very well stated Jim Wilde...

Dooley- Our only options are to pray, work, and continue to stand up for the values we hold dear. Mid term elections in 2 years are our best hope at this point.

Typical GOP.... How about a letter of truth and honesty about how Bush and Cheney have brought this country to near ruin?. Why don't y'all look at the GOP dirty laundry from over the years, admit it and "own" it? Maybe if the GOP would really own the wrong they have done then the American people would begin to want to hear a syllable of what they had to utter. Until then, it all sounds like sour grapes with an elitist attitude. Get off of the notion that the GOP is entitled to run this country because everyone else is not as smart or as white. Remember what the deficit was when Bush took office eight long, long, long years ago!

ldsmith1

J.C. Watts, Condoleeza Rice, Clarence Thomas, Alberto Gonzales, Colin Powell, Bobby Jindal - my favorite elite, smart, white members of the GOP. (Not necessarily in that order.)

JohnQPublic

Oh, were all of the above people of color running for VP with Bush, twice, or more recently for VP with McCain? Better yet...were any of them supported by the GOP to run for President? I didn't think so....

HotFoot

I didn't live down here the last time a Democrat won the Presidency, which would have been Bill Clinton. Did you all gnash your teeth and wring your hands and declare 'ol Bill a socialist, too? I know Georgia voted for him the first time around. So, did the right-wingers who didn't vote for him weigh in before he was even inaugurated with cries of "Hitler" (implied by Wilde's comment about the German people) and socialist and "America-hating"? I suspect not. I suspect it's only because Pres. Elect Obama is African-American and has an exotic name. Maybe if you folks went to a large public university or traveled or ever lived in a big city, you wouldn't find any of this so strange and frightening. Booga-booga!

JohnQPublic

Midwest....LMAO! Great post!

HotFoot

Thanks, coalminerpa...now count to three and wait for the other side to call for me to go back where I came from, since I obviously don't fully appreciate the South in all its superior wisdom. BTW, one poster said the U. of Utah was a midwestern school. So many people down here don't have a clue about the rest of the country.

_SisterAbdullahX_

GACopperhead, when you unfairly make ANYONE pay so that someone else can pay less, ie spreading the wealth around" THAT is socialism. How hard is that to understand?

Lorraine

The term socialism continues to be thrown around in a loose manner. Just because John McCain and Sarah Palin alluded to the fact that Barack Obama was a socialist, there were uninformed people and people who had a desperate need to believe that Barack was a socialist. I didn't recall this term being used loosely during Bill Clinton's campaigns and even while he was president. President Clinton also shared similar ideas regarding viable ways to help the middle class and the economy. The Republican duo (McCain and Palin) were pulling at straws as minutes were tickling away toward their bid for the White House in an attempt to sway voters. This tactic and other scare tactics that were used of course did not sway a number of independent voters and other undecided voters. I am happy to see that these voters were informed and made the best choice of voting for a presidential candidate (Barack Obama) that is intelligent, visionary, and has the best solutions in mind to address our economy and other problems that beset our nation.

IncredibleGuy

Middle class, middle class.....la la la....such a political campaign slogan.......Middle is a relative term. There is always going to middle class, just hope it ain't middle class in a third world nation, as Obama wishes.

palomino9

Jim, you are among the conservatives who are p'd off because of the economy that the bush administration has left us with. Obama is not socialist. Live up to the fact, like a man, that the American public is tired of the bush dictatorship. Obama has many good ideas, and will turn this country around, and the Democrats will once again correct all of the mistakes made by a bush administration. You wallet will be much better off for it, believe me.

_SisterAbdullahX_

To use your own words, palomino9....President Bush is not a dictator. Live up to the fact!

_SisterAbdullahX_

And for the record, MY wallet is far better off now, with my lower taxes, than it was when Clinton was president. Why would I welcome Obama, with his plan to restore those higher taxes by letting the Bush tax cuts expire?

_SisterAbdullahX_

How about you list some of those Good Ideas that Obama has. He sure hasn't made them public. The rest of us would like to hear them.

_SisterAbdullahX_

What a coincidence that the economy started to tank at about the same time that the balance of power shifted in congress. What a coincidence indeed.

To Factchecker: more of the redistribution fairytale. It seems the right leaning folke see this as some sort of communist plot. The same folks stood by the last eight years while the GOP redistriutated the wealth upward.

the last eight years have seen the ave. pay check shrink by 2500 dollars. Under Clinton it rose about 3000 dollars. So we're almost making what we made in 1992. If you noticed , the profits for corperations have risen ...off the charts. As to the Bush tax cuts, no matter how you figure it, the rich got richer! so it seems to me the GOP has no problem taking from the poor and giving it to the rich, kinda of a reverse Robin Hood.

Give the new guy a chance , you may find out he's not as bad as you think. And, if he is an absolute bust, he will be better than this dim bulb we've had the last eight years!
