Finalists named for Guy Award
From Staff and Wire Reports
Thursday, November 27, 2008

Three finalists have been named for the Ray Guy Award, presented to the nation's top college punter by the Greater Augusta Sports Council.

The finalists are West Virginia's Pat McAfee , Oklahoma State's Matt Fodge and Utah's Louie Sakoda .

The winner will be announced Dec. 11 during the ESPNU-Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

Sakoda is also a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, presented to the nation's top college place-kicker.

FLORIDA STATE: Has the longest bowl eligible streak going in the nation, but where the Seminoles end up could be interesting.

Unless Florida State somehow wins the Atlantic Coast Conference and makes it to the Orange Bowl, it's anyone's guess where the Seminoles will wind up during the holidays. Jacksonville or Atlanta would be good possibilities unless the Seminoles are embarrassed on Saturday by Florida.

The Seminoles haven't been to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta where a matchup against an Southeastern Conference foe would ensure a big crowd. With Alabama, Florida and Georgia likely to be off the board for that game, maybe Bobby Bowden will again be looking across the sidelines at South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier , a familiar foe from his days at Florida.

VANDERBILT: Heads into Wake Forest on Saturday night without its top running back.

Jared Hawkins strained ligaments in his left foot in last week's 20-10 loss to Tennessee. He started 10 of 11 games this season and is the leading rusher with 580 yards on 131 attempts. He's the Commodores third-leading receiver with 16 catches for 121 yards.

That leaves Vandy with Jeff Jennings , Kennard Reeves , Gaston Miller and Ryan van Rensburg .

Vanderbilt also will be without defensive end Broderick Stewart who broke his left leg in the Tennessee loss and had surgery later the same day.

KENTUCKY: Will try to end its decades-long losing streak to Tennessee on Saturday without defensive linemen Jeremy Jarmon and Ricky Lumpkin .

Jarmon is still recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee on Nov. 18 after tearing some cartilage in a loss to Vanderbilt. Lumpkin suffered a high ankle sprain and will also be out.

The Wildcats will also play without safety Marcus McClinton , who received a severe gash in his leg against the Commodores.

YALE: Coach Jack Siedlecki has announced that he is retiring after 12 years and two Ivy League championships, but he'll be staying at the university to become assistant director of athletics.

Siedlecki was 70-47 and 47-37 in the conference during his tenure, which included sharing league championships with Brown in 1999 and Princeton in 2006.

Siedlecki took the helm after Hall of Famer Carm Cozza retired in 1996 after 32 seasons.
