Obama voters didn't know facts

  • Follow Letters

I read Kathleen Parker's column Nov. 20 ("Religion is killing the GOP") and found it disgusting!

Parker seems to think it is the religious right that is ruining the Republican Party instead of the Democratic mouthpiece we call the mainstream media of which she is a part.

Ms. Parker bashes Gov. Palin while ignoring the fact that a Zogby poll showed 57 percent of President-elect Obama supporters didn't know who controlled Congress. Many could not identify Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi; 86 percent didn't know how President-elect Obama won his first election (he got the other three candidates disqualified); 86 percent didn't know President-elect Obama said he would bankrupt the coal industry or new coal-fired power plants; 72 percent didn't know Biden had to quit a campaign because of plagiarism; 87 percent did know that the Republican Party spent $150,000 dollars on Gov. Palin's clothes; 93 percent knew Gov. Palin had a pregnant teenage daughter.

Least you think the questions were asked of the uneducated: 97 percent of those sampled were high school graduates and 55 percent were college graduates.

The failure of the press (of which Ms Parker is a part) to educate the voters is a threat to the republic! Someone once said, "If you read the newspapers you will be informed, however misinformed." This appears to be truer today than ever before!

Move along, nothing new to see here...I see you saw that video too.

David, Kathleen Parker is an entertaining writer whose purpose is to sell articles. She goes where the market goes. She is not a messiah or prognosticator. She's an entertainer. Your whine has no merit.

I'm sure if you compare SAT test scores and IQ of voters in the states McCain won versus those Obama won we would have enough data to settle the intelligent voter issue. Most red states are not traditional educational powerhouse. But I don't think we even want to go there. Where is Joe the plumber -- a man widely found to be a fraud and unaware of the fact that Obama's plan would help him more than McCain's. He is a small example of the rampant ignorance among people who supported McCain. Most are the same poor and uneducated folks who voted for Bush twice and are now broke, unemployed and wondering "What happened" (and why do we continue supporting them).

bcs2k

The GOP problems can be found in the mirror. It is now two parties and each side hates the other. Have fun trying to fight your self induced civil war.

jack234

The electioin is over - time to move on. The GOP has four years to come up with a new plan. Maybe they should go after the voters who are ignorant of whom their government officials are instead of trying to mock them. After all, look like the democrats realized that ignorant votes (relative term) counted just like PhD votes. HELLO.

jack234

Look like they knew enough facts to put Obama in office. HELLO!!!

Bizarro

The Dem party is also divided with the liberal core that started the drive and the centrist populace that elected Obama. It would be a non sequitur to equate opinions with intelligence. Remember Watson of Watson and Crick fame was removed from his position in the Cold Spring Harbor because of ignorant racist comments he had made. Our voting practices maybe more genetic than a intelligenct choice. Behavior geneticists say almost every human behavior that can be reliably measured--from TV-watching to optimism--is significantly influenced by genes. Now they're extending their reach into the voting booth. Numerous studies over the past 2 decades, the first led by psychologist Nicholas Martin at the Queensland Institute for Medical Research in Australia, have indicated that genes have a significant influence over whether you're "liberal" or "conservative" on various political and social issues. Bizarro

Some heritability estimates have been as high as 50%. That's roughly the heritability found for many personality traits such as "extraversion" or "agreeableness," and it implies that, in a given population, about half of the variation in a particular trait is attributable to genetic differences.

Now James Fowler, a political scientist at the University of California, San Diego, and grad student Christopher Dawes say they've produced fresh evidence that DNA also has a hand in the intensity of someone's partisan attachment and even in whether someone bothers to vote.

Bizarro

So those who elected Obama did so because of genetic traits. You know the traits that also must correlate with unintelligent, unproductive, unsuccessful lives and the lack of ethics that they feel it justified to steal from the rich so they may gain. Wow isn't science amazing and so accurate and true. hee, hee, hee.

The facts concerning Obama were in plain sight but the masses are more in love with what they want to see instead...Kind of like a tradition of sorts...But whatever Obama is our next President which gives way now to praying that he will become the President, a good man, who will seek to put this nation and her people, all her people, before his ambitions....

I4PUTT

12% of the population is black. That 12% did not decide this race. We had 2 very weak candidates. The one who raised the most money won. Unfortunately he will most likely be the one who raises the most money again. But from us this time.

Bizarro

But you forgot Putt that 12% voted twice so really it is 24%. hee, hee, hee. It is all biological. I'll call it the Obama gene. I believe I can come up with a strategy to help identify this gene. Hey perhaps it isn't a natural gene at all, but biological warfare where a retrovirus with the Obama gene infects people and mutates them into Obama supporters. Perhaps the same people who gave Obama all that money also payed for this new Obama virus. It all makes sense now. A new conspiracy theory!!!If I disappear you all know what happened. I guess the scientist who created the virus didn't realize how nature always wins and some people are immune to this viruses mutating effects on rational thought. Good thang. huh.

Biz, first thing I checked after election results. Population of US versus total number of Democrat votes. We need Obama. Obama need us. Obama need ACORN.

Bizarro

It reminds me of the ole adage-"Even a blind squirrel will find a nut every once in a while". A blind squirrel found an ACORN. Open it up and you find Obama-the nut. hee, hee, hee. Words of wisdom from sage Biz.

disssman

14putty just how many illegal ACORN voters have been convicted? Remember the CONservativeS still hold the power to prosecute and run the Federla prosecutors offices in all states. Last I heard there haven't been any convictions!

bsandersga

What percentage of people who voted for George Bush in 2004 still believe Iraq was responsible for 9/11? What percentage of people who voted for John McCain still believe that Obama is a Muslim? If the media is a "Democratic mouthpiece" George Bush would have never been elected president and we would not be at war in Iraq.

bsandersga, are you and midwest sharing a computer or just reading an old NPR script?

Hoo-wee, what an enlightened liberal press...try this one on: http://www.freep.com/article/20081125/COL10/81125018 "Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the bravest member of Congress, introduced legislation 11 months ago to impeach the president and vice president. (...) Last week, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, submitted a resolution demanding that Bush stop issuing "pre-emptive pardons of senior officials in his administration during the final 90 days of office." Yes, indeedy, the voice of reason and intellectual acumen SPEAKS. All tremble before the reasony-ness of the this reporter! Let's see, anyone who can actually pen the lines "Kucinich, the bravest member of Congress" without giggle so hard he hits the ESC button on his keyboard, just ain't payin' attention... And then there's the confusion about why nobody is jumping in with Nadler...couldn't have anything to do with the fact that his "resolution" is in opposition to something that is not happening...Noooo... It really is the EXTREME of Bush Derangement Syndrome, don't you think, to be pushing for impeachment NOW? I mean, hasn't the guy already moved to Crawford or something...?

palomino9

sounds like the same bitter outbursts from a republican who supported a man, if he even deserves the designation, that ruined our financial market, killed thousands of our military proud, and took this country into the worst crisis since the great depression

willistontownsc

I don't agree with the Camden op-ed writer on a whole lot, but she is correct in saying that religion is killing the GOP. In fact, another major reason why the GOP lost is because they use religion in the EXACT same manner as the Taliban some eight or nine time zones to the east.

sjgraci

This poll was a fraud paid for by radical right wing radio host John Ziegler. Here's what John Zogby said about his own company's involvement, "I also believe it was not our finest hour. This slipped through the cracks." The poll asked stupid questions that were misleading and untrue and got stupid results. It is only the stupid and misleading that now tout it.

sjgraci

David Brown should go back and read Kathleen Parker's piece again and, instead of finding disgust in it or an opportunity to push a flawed poll, listen to what she is saying if he really wants to know the truth. She is a Conservative after all, funny how Brown fails to mention that and instead lumps her in to the "mainstream media". But I guess all media is a part of that now including Limbaugh, Fox, and the Chronicle. What Parker said is true. It is why the Republicans have lost huge the last two elections and why they will continue to lose moderates and independents if they don't change their ways. But, thanks to people like Brown and Palin, they will likely continue on their way to irrelevence and the party of the South and Appalachia.

Bizarro

Well sjgraci likely, no matter what Obama does, the economy will tank the next four years under a Dem controlled Congress. There failue to achieve productive solutions and the return of their corrupt ways will likely mark a shortlived return of the Dem party. It would suit me fine if both parties bite the dust. They have proven their complete incompetence for decades. The end of the two parties would mark real change.

jack

bcs2k I wouldn't bet on those blue states being all that educated, especiall the union controlled ones. DC supported BO and has a school system worse than any red state. The same for Detroit/Michigan.

jack

Bizarro, my thoughts exactly. BO promised to balance the budget in his first term (McCain did too). Now let's see him fall on his [filtered word] on that one. He also promised lower taxes on those making under $250K (or was it $200K or $150K?) and watch our taxes rise when the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010. In other words, the BO lemmings got suckered. Hope they have a great 4 years.

carcraft

sjgraci , Yes, those were misleading stupid questions, for a democrat! Who is Nancy Pelosi? There is a really doubled ended misleader. Which Party controls congress ? Boy that is a stupid question. Who plagerizes ? No need to know that one,(not once but about three times). Harry Reid, insignificant in the scheme of things. Sorry they ask such tough questions of some dumbs, oops mean Dems!

carcraft

Brokaw and Rose talking about how much they don't know about Obama. Gee these really sharp fellows form the press corp only had two years to ask the questions but they could not get thier mouths off Obama's rear end long eonugh to ask.

patriciathomas

I'm with you bizzaro, if the only change Obama brings is the downfall of the incestuous parties, I'll feel he's done more then his share.

johnsmith

sjgraci, you liberals need to stop celebrating the "end of conservatism." I mean, you need to sit in a quiet place for a moment and ask yourself: "Do I really believe that George Bush personally engineered the economic situation that exists today? Do I really believe that Barack Obama wields the Magic Finger of Destiny that will cure all woes? Do I really, honestly, truly believe that Reid and Pelosi & Co. are the answer to the country's woes? Do I really believe that any human endeavor absorbed by the Federal Government is performed better, more efficiently, and with greater equity?" See, here's what I think conservatives like me are going to do: I'm going to vote for Martin on Tuesday. I think Chambliss is a waste and a fraud, and I think the Republican Party in general has been a waste and a fraud on the one issue on which it had credibility: reduced government. I want to give you liberals eight years of completely unfettered liberal control of EVERYTHING, because I think it's going to be like the little kid eating too much candy. Eventually, you will understand that too much Big Brother makes you sick, and you'll look for the adults to come back and take the candy away...

willistontownsc

sjgraci has the post of the day. The GOP must do a 540 if they are going to be relevant outside of this region. Shutting the religious extremists completely out of the party would be a major step in the right direction. Republicans are a Southern Party -- soon to be completely shut out in New England, more than 20 years after George HW Bush (R) routed Michael Dukakis (D) in that region.
